  • Garden Gals and Guys, in today's video I take you through more beautiful blooms on the July 9th planted Dahlias, as well as, walk you through my cutting garden in Mid-July showing you what's still blooming, what's going out of season, and a little surprise garden growth as well!
I hope this shows you that if you're running behind, it's still better to put your dahlias in the ground in early July rather than leave them out and having to store them. I was able to manage to get several blooms and didn't have to worry about them rotting or shriveling in storage. Though - let me be clear - I still recommend getting them in the ground earlier than July for sure! :)
As the season is winding down, I'm grateful to see some blooms still out there and hope to get at least one more bouquet cut before the season is over. Stay tuned!

Our lows are in the teens 🥶. Can’t really complain because we had a long, beautiful fall. SE Idaho.

Isn't it, Bonny!? I just love it. And it's clearly so easy to grow!

Peaches n Cream dahlia is one of my favorites. It is one of the earliest to bloom and today I cut the last blooms. Tonight in southern Wisconsin, we are getting down to the twenties. I spent a lot of the day cutting flowers to enjoy. Yesterday, I ordered dahlias from Skyfall Flowers in Grayslake and today I was wearing a hat and coat. Our ground is wet and cold, so I can't plant tulips yet. I did dig some dahlias out last Monday upon hearing our cold and wet forecast. I even dug some out by headlamp. I started with the 9 Cafe Au Lait. I have had a difficult time getting them not to dry out during the winter so I stored them a day later. Our basement is not as cool as it should be for storage. Our garage does stay above freezing most of the time, so I may put some there and return to the basement if January is bitterly cold. Happy digging!

Yep! We hit a frost last night! Now I've got to figure out how I'm going to try storing clumps this year (I don't feel like dividing tubers in the Fall before storing this year). Any suggestions, Sue? I tried the garage last year in vermiculite and it wasn't great. I put on my winter coat, hat, and gloves today as well...just in time for Trick-or-Treaters of course! I haven't planted any tulips yet, but I think I'll wait for it to dry out a bit as well. Happy digging to you as well! :)

My pleasure! The frost came and took it all last night for the first time. I guess the next chapter of digging and planting tulips awaits us now!

Calendula and Alyssum are still shining Brite here in Michigan, zone 5. There are still surprises around each corner. 😊

Love hearing that! Frost came last night and some snapdragons are as happy as can be here! The garden is amazing! Enjoy your lasting blooms! :)

Oh my, Ilene! Like clockwork, we hit freezing last night for the first time...the change of the seasons has begun!

Dahlia storage is a challenge. I usually use vermiculite and paper in paper boxes as well as leaf bags. I have had better results with leaf bags. This year, I stored the first ones in pine shavings. I do not rinse or divide in the fall. I put down a few inches of pine chips , put several dahlias in a plastic container, and did another layer of pine shavings followed by the dahlias. Another thing that I am doing is not waiting too long to store because they dry out quickly. Now, our soil is too wet to dig!

I also plant in 2 week waves to get some later blooms. Still have lots of Dahlias and sunflowers.

Wow, I bet it's beautiful for you right now. Frost came last night for the first time and took it all, but I had a good year. I guess I'm ready to welcome in the next phase of work. Dig, dig, and dig!

@@TinysGarden, I'm going to try a no dig method for Dahlias this year. I gifted some to a friend and they have been coming back for her.

@@TinysGarden I did…but I ordered from Holland Bulb Farms and literally nothing was what I ordered 🥲 Single petal pink and orange…idek if I want to bother saving the tubers. I’ve read online that many others have had the same experience with this company. First frost I think is tonight, so I need to decide by then 😅

I think you’ve got the wrong name for what you called Ivanetti, it’s a dark maroon ball. It’s a prolific producer of very uniformly ball shaped blooms.
Whatever yours is, it’s certainly beautiful though 😊

Omg, you may be right! That's what I ordered and what I was sent as Ivanetti...I do know my tag is correct as what it was supposed to be labeled. Oh gosh, now I wonder what it is! Thankfully you're right - it is pretty!

How do you care for dahlias so you don't have bug damage? Do you spray? If so, what do you spray with. I used bags this year and any flower not bagged was damaged by bugs.

    • @TinysGarden
      @TinysGarden  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I haven't sprayed at all this year...my bug pressure wasn't terrible, so I got lucky. I do recommend the organza bags, which it sounds like you did. I think once the temps cooled off a bit they left my garden. I have to say I was lucky. I'm sorry I don't have better advice!
