The lore has been going on for over a decade now, and all the albums are intertwined in some ways, so there's a lot that went into this.

love this band and so glad you checked out this song, hope you dive into more of their music. Just 2 guys in the band, drummer is josh dun and and tyler joseph is singer and multi instrumentalist.
the band released a video before this called 'I Am Clancy' that kinda gives an overview of the story or 'lore' they've been telling over the last few albums, leading up to this video about a character called 'Clancy' trapped in a city called 'Dema' in a world Tyler created called Trench, which is kinda a metaphor for battling again insecurities and dealing with mental health issues. They have a playlist on their channel called 'The Story' that has the music videos that are part of the Trench storyline in order thats worth checking out.
You can dig in this rabbit hole, this is the first track of the new album Clancy, and every song has a music video. Few of them like this one is from a lore that theyre building from the past 9 years.
Fire album, but this is to be a journey. Kinda like NF. Start from the beginning. Cool fun fact. On the 1st leg of NF's Hope tour. He played his 1st show in 21 pilots home town, Columbus Ohio. They were in attendance. Start with "holding on to you."

Their band name is based off the Arthur Miller play "All My Sons." A WWII military supplier knowingly supplied the Air Corps with faulty engines that ended up killing 21 pilots.

Twenty one pilots sort of famously falls under the pop genre, and I'd say they definitely belong there because they don't lean THAT heavy into their other influences - but boy, are there many influences. Sure, they're "pop", but calling them a pop group would be doing them a disservice. These guys mix and match and bring in other musical influences in places you'd never expect it to fit, and they just make it work. Even the few times they do make a song that is purely "pop", they make sure to do something interesting with it, and the soundscape of their songs is always super full and interesting. One of my all-time favorite bands, and I typically only exclusively listen to metal, so that's saying something!

Dude seeing you appreciate the video aswell there is whole crazy 8 years long lore behind Twenty one Pilots and conceptual music/albums thats super deep, full of easter eggs and characters and so on, you would love that once you start putting the puzzle together, haha! :) In this video basically the performer wasnt actually Tyler/Clancy, but was a person seized by Clancy (as you can see at teh end of the video Tyler with the horns was seizing him and mindcontroling him). But thats jut 1 % of the lore. Nice reaction!

No but on a serious note, twenty one pilots are severely underrated, you will not be disappointed if you continue on this journey. They are so incredibly talented and they have a super loyal fan base (The Clique) we will guide you through because they do have a lore that has been going on for 10 years that’s why some of the MV are kind of confusing. And they are in their own genre, no one really sounds like them. They take elements from everywhere. Subscribing for more TØP content!! 😊

watch live shows actuall;ty the mtv unplugged is a great one to start with, is not long and has a good assortment of dif songs and cool small setting. not unplugged though. is lectric and looping instruments and vocals and even loops crowd into songs etc. def look into more great music and each album very diferrent .

Twenty-one Pilots can't really placed into one or even a few genres as you'll soon find out, as well as most of their songs individually. Being unpredictable and different is their whole thing, and you'll never know what you're going to get or what direction the song will take you. What I lobe about them, though, is that no matter the style, every song communicates hope in some way, and that's not even getting into the lore/story.
This music video is in the latter end of a story they've been telling for nearly a decade and spans across four albums. The story is symbolic of fighting mental health and goes crazy deep into its meaning, symbolism, and messages. If you want to get into the music video storyline, Twenty-one Pilots has a playlist called "The Story" with the music videos in order. This also includes a video called "I Am Clancy", which gives an overview/summary of the story up to this song. The story is incredible, but the meaning behind it is why so many people are huge fans.
Since this is your first reaction to Twenty-one Pilots, maybe hold off on the storyline until you get into their music. The music, the story, and the meaning are 3 totally different levels, so maybe stick with the music and see how you like their music before the fanbase tosses you into the deep end of Twenty-one Pilots' incredible story.
I'd recommend reacting to songs like Holding Onto You, Guns For Hands, or other classic but iconic songs by them and see where you want to go on the Twenty-one Pilots journey from there. There's plenty to soak in with just their music/lyrics before jumping into the story.
