🇲🇽 Migrants at the US-Mexico border: Overcoming walls and prejudice

  • When the US government was partially shut down, migrants and asylum seekers along the Mexican border continued trying to enter the country.
Efforts by President Donald Trump to force the Democratic Party, which controls the House of Representatives, to fund a border wall had reached an impasse, meaning there was no agreement on a budget.
The government shutdown impacted the normal functioning of unrelated operations of the US government. The crisis also affected people in Mexico who live along the trail the migrants take to get from Central America to the United States.
And at the centre of the crisis were the migrants seeking a better future in the US. Some simply jump over the wall; others, especially men, seek the help of smugglers to cross the border.
Javier has smuggled people across the border for more than 25 years, since he was 14.
He says it's all "changed a lot (since he started smuggling). It first used to take us two to four hours. Then, the way became six to eight hours, and 10 years later, we needed 15 to 20 hours. Nowadays, it takes us 40 to 45 hours to cross the border."
Since Trump has deployed soldiers and helicopters and installed sensors along the border "it's more complicated. We now have to go around to stay away from the border patrol and it costs more."
However "there's always another way," says Javier, who believes that Trump's wall cannot stop people from crossing the border. It may be "very high. But we will overcome it."
Bibian is a Guatemalan migrant who has made her way to Mexico. She and her family suffered the damage caused by tropical storm Agatha, so she wanted to seek a better life for her family.
"I dreamed of going to the US because it seemed very easy," Bibian says. "That's why many people came along. I thought we could overcome the barriers and move forward without any problem. I didn't know what we would suffer."
She realised that "it's not going to be easy. There are a lot of racist people who say we're bringing diseases. There are also good people ... those who crossed as migrants and eventually became US citizens. They are supporting us."
"It's an adventure for me. It's not humiliating or below me. It really is an adventure."
But opposition against migrants does not just come from the American side of the border. In Tijuana, Alfredo, a restaurant owner and accountant, says he feels his town has been hijacked. But he also blames the Mexican government for not handling the situation in a better way.
"The very first day we had 500 people here, many of them asked me for power for their cellphones; many of them, children, they asked me for soda, for a pizza. I gladly gave them to them ... but was disappointed," he recalls. "People are afraid of Central American people because on Facebook a lot of people say that they are ... people that are coming to damage the society."
"We need to get our city back, because right now it feels like it's been kidnapped."
Hector from Honduras made the journey to the US as a teenager, but he "returned from America because I became an alcoholic and things didn't go well. I thought it was better to leave and return at another time ... Now that I am an adult, I want to return to the US," says Hector.
"My [pregnant] wife made it to the US. She wasn't hurt or injured."
Asked about anti-immigrant prejudice on the rise, Hector says: "We are migrant workers. If they could only see the place we came from they would understand."
"It's easy to conclude that migrants are criminals or that we come to pollute the place ... It's very tough what we've endured to get here, but it doesn't matter, the most important thing for us is getting to the US. It hurts, but what can we do against such stereotypes?
"There are some of us who may not behave well when they're in other countries. If I'm here in Mexico, I need to be good. And no matter where I go to, I will be good."

Also if you press cap locks again it will take it off.

I work in a hospital and they always come in to the emergency department for non emergencies like a headache they had for an hour, or a slight cough, etc... and come in at least 1 time a week. They bring the entire family they all check in, take up beds for people that actually have an emergency. THEN HAVE TO PAY NOTHING. THEY GET BENEFITS FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY BECAUSE OF HAVING CHILDREN. if they had an emergency then by all means come in but coming in for things that are not an emergency can cause harm to Americans because they are taking up resources that are not necessary.

Wow .. what a hit piece on Americans .. Calling us racist because we want to have a secure border yet they don't want to be stereotyped ?? Admitting they want people on this side to change our government so they came storm our border . I work construction like many of them .. My trade has been devastated , wages have stagnated and plummeted . As a natural born citizen and construction worker .. I have seen the impact first hand . Granted , most of the hispanics I meet are good hard working guys. But come pay day .. There is a difference in how we all get paid .. American workers get a check with deductions and most illegals get an envelop of cash .. I don't blame them .. I blame those in Washington for allowing laws to be ignored . I blame the media that pumps out the narrative that anyone that wants a wall is racist .. I blame the talk show host that demonize people like me that struggle to keep food on my table . Yet they themselves live behind walls in gated communities , Surrounded by security . Being well paid and will never experience the impact it has on their livelihood. I blame the professors that indoctrinate students that have yet to taste the working world and are secured by their parent's trust funds ..

Their only dream...to mooch, sleep all day, gamble & drink welfare money away, in Las Vegas & Laughlin, NV. Believe me, I've dealt blackjack to these fools. They come from Californication, and waste welfare money they receive for their kids, and gamble, lose it, get angry at us dealers.

They come from so many horrible, inhumane situations and I do believe the USA should have a fair and reasonably timed process when it comes to accepting migrants. It’s it prejudice. We have illegals of all nationalities living in the US supported by taxpayer dollars, flaunting how weak our security and our judiciary systems are. Come in the right way, less of a problem. Although VISAs should be the next things we look at. As well as liberal laws that worked in the 1800s but are obsolete today. It’s a lot to ask for.

Other countries like the Philippines have some kind of a caregiver program where women have to clean toilets for three years before they can apply for a citizenship. They can do the same thing.

Fascinating interview with the smuggler. I wonder if by giving the interview he is shooting himself in the foot--it might help US Border Patrol to catch smugglers. I wonder how he gets back into Mexico. Maybe he goes through a port of entry; maybe he even has a passport?
This isn't some great piece of journalism or anything, but, sheesh, this comment section is the most drivel I've ever seen.

Very lucrative business for the cartel. That alone should cause Americans to think that this is not good for America or the people they are smuggling.

I wish they would learn English just like i did. Its my 2nd language. They come and never bother to learn the language. I work in the medical field the amount of people that dont even try to learn English is frustrating. They only want social benefits. Not one of these people in the video said anything about having fear for there life for the reason they came to the us. Ship them back. Its not fair to the people that came here the LEGAL way.

    • @kirkw.mclaren3534

So True. When I live in other countries I learn the local language. When immigrants fail to learn the language they are vulnerable and employers from the same country exploit them. Plus they can't help their children in school.

No welfare we have our homeless families here they come first. Trump will get another 4 years we cant keep allowing this even a Senator who is San Diego who is a Democrat is saying people are begging for a Wall this isn't going to end well.

I beg to differ. The Democratic Party was not in the majority during the US government partial shut down. And in fact, agreements were made several times between the president and Congress. He refused to sign each final bill (the next day) (with the same clauses as agreed upon by the president).
