How To Spot: A Porsche 944 Turbo Cup

What's so special about a 944 Turbo Cup? Just look for the vibrant, 1980s livery and phone dial wheels, right? Not exactly! There is a lot more to these rare Porsche 944 Turbo Cups than meets the eye. Watch and learn as Transaxle Historian, Gregory Coe, and LBI Limited's Adolfo Massari go over the fine minutiae and get behind the wheel of the Turbo Cup.
The subject example for this film is the Reebok-Sponsored 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup that was driven by a charismatic, grassroots racer by the name of Rick Bye during the 1988 and 1989 seasons of David Deacon's Rothmans Turbo Cup Series. A Canadian-National, single-marque series that featured the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup as a platform to increase awareness thus elevating sales for the mass-market, road-going variants. Only 39 were built for the Rothmans Series out of approximately 192 total. Each car was a Weissach-Built factory race car built to compete at the highest levels of motorsport. The 944 Cup Series cars were the first Porsche "Cup" cars produced, setting the stage for the famous 911 Cup series that still exist today.
Not only are these cars relatively unknown to the larger base of car enthusiasts, but they are also extremely undervalued when compared to their other factory-built race car contemporaries.
What makes them so special? Watch and learn as we methodically go through the nuances of the 944 Turbo Cup, touching on the series history, and highlighting the legendary Reebok-liveried Rick Bye Car.
