I can't believe this guy after all he's thanking the audience.... no man we should thank you for you time to share your experience with us .... thank you
Thank you so much for this presentation Jim Heavey. You taught me so much, and just as importantly mistakes to avoid, I now feel able to face the challenge of using my mid range Bosch with confidence
I have never felt the need to comment on any TH-cam video before but this is unbelievable. I have learnt more in the last hour than the previous month or so searching online and reading books and magazines, thanks so much,
I just got my first router this morning, but i didn't buy any of the bits yet, and boy am i glad to have come across this video! It filled up many many, hole spots in my knowledge. I watched a lot of vids for begginers, but none as comprehensive as this one, especially on bits part. Thanks to the person who uploaded it to yt, and to mister Heavy.
Amazing. As a tutor myself, I can honestly say that this delivery of knowledge, tips & advice from Jim was excellent. So much information and so clearly explained throughout. TH-cam videos this long normally put me to sleep, but I felt like I was sitting amongst this group learning what Jim was covering and I was alert from start to finish. Thank you sir for a great video!!
Wow. Not often I applaud a TH-cam video! Thanks Jim, I've yet to buy my first router, and I have learned more about what to buy and how to use one from your talk than every other video I've seen combined. Going to watch that a a couple of more times and take notes, superb talk packed with useful information and zero fluff. Thank you ! :)
Thank you Jim I did wood work in the 70s and now 2018 in my home I do wood work and you are such a great teacher on the router I will get through all my cuts good i'm making a new closet and cupboards etc. god bless you ,I saved a lot of money doing it my self !
I'm actually out of breath and I didn't say a word!! Great job you can feel the passion in in your work especially when you think you forgot to tell a complete stranger a small detail that would otherwise be irrelevant. Thank you for that passion. Central Indiana.
This is a video to watch over and over again, there is so much to learn, he is so clear and to tghe point, I've never seen a better instructional video than this, THANK YOU SIR, you are an awesome teacher!
Thank you very much does not cut it.There is knowledge in my head that was not there before I watched this. Although one could argue there is enough empty space in my head, it's not like I needed to clear out any to make room for this, I would like to thank Mr. Heavy for sharing his.
Good teacher. I've seen him in person at least 3 times. Enjoy his lectures. No one has a stupid question, and he dosn't always have an answer. Yes you can stump an old guy.
This is a class on a show guys are getting expensive knowledge cheaply, thank you mr. Teacher I have benefited way cheaper on my you tube video. Thank you it's awesome wisdom. ❤
Wonderful presentation, I thought I knew all about it but? I tend to forget by getting senior moments, great video and thank you again. Bye for now from OZ Jack Marashlian
amazing presentation and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video! despite you saying your not a salesman and we can clearly see your passion for woodworking and educating only makes me want to buy products from you even more! any of those big brands would be very lucky to have you as one of there ambassadors for there products! great job my friend :)
Thank you for all the wonderful videos. I really love to be able to watch the seminars that I do not get to see due to not be able to afford to go to the seminars.
Refreshing to hear a very experienced practical man who knows that most of us live in the real world and don't have a cavernous heated workshop and have to make do with the garden shed and don't have an unlimited budget. Thanks. Great video.
The whole time I am watching this I am thinking, oh man, I gotta remember that. I learned a ton from this. I wii most likely be watching this again. Thanks to youtube for the 2x speed mode.
Wish i had come across this before that way i would understand a lot more about the purchases, that said i can move forward with more confidence and understanding, excellent info want to watch more now
Muchas gracias por compartir sus conocimientos tan desinteresadamete. Thank you for sharing your knowledge so generously. Thanks again from Chihuahua, México.
I didnt know that, thanks for letting us know. Im kidding. TH-cam is a very good sorce for information on how to do things but not always becuse some people seem to show you the wrong or unsafe ways, use comon sence. If the guys cutting wood and only has 3 fingers its probably good idea to put the blade guard back on. Even though its a little late. You cannot be too safe, but you can be missing a few fingers.
Well, I saw Jim Heavy walking with the Queen Doing the Woodworks of London I saw a woodworker drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's And his hair was perfect
Funny you said somthing about a trim router and fingers going into the open side of them. I was using a trim router one day and holding it low to get better control out of it because if you do that you have less chance it will rock on you and make a poor cut, m middle finger got nipped by the spinning 45 dgr bevel I was using in it. I'd like to see manufactures include a guard for both sides of trim routers you can take off or put into place when using the tool. I got lucky it hurt like mad, but its 99% healed with some change in fell but it looks normal you wouldn't know I did it until I told you about it. I had the doctor use Surgical super glue to seal up the wound my idea. 500 dollar band aid. Be real careful with trim routers this one had 1.5 Hp about as much as a big router. And this speaker is fantastic at the woodworking shows. Very personable. Really nice guy. Some chick will snatch him up!
Pattern bit has bearing on the top, flush-trim has it on the bottom. Also kinda missing the point on spindle sanders, they're generally fairly course grit and used to hog out material and get down to the line then it's up to you to decide what level you want to finish it to, but it's true a good pattern bit removes the need to sand it.
He makes a great comment about higher rated vs what works, for, you. I have a really nice Porter cable. It works great in my table but freehand it is not so good. I have a cheap old craftsman. Freehand it's awesome.
only if you like Hard work and sweat tears and blood, be careful working with tools. but then you could get a staple in your finger at work or a paper cut too.
I had both and they hurt! but I also had plenty of splinters on my hands. I am quite experienced with tools, and enjoy my weekend projects with wood. But the router.....mmmm....nope.
I repeat, just because Bosch is watermarked on the video and a big Bosch router is sharing the video frame with me like a co-host, we are not endorsing any products. "Routers come in (3) styles:" Bosch, Bosch and Bosch.
An excellent presentation, but much too long (ONE HOUR) to take in in one viewing. This is why the video is much better than to see it live. With video, you can take a break from time to time when you find yourself nodding off. Unfortunately, I didn't think of this when I started, but I'm going to go back and watch it again in segments. Since I'm a beginner, I'm also going to be watching other videos. Other speakers and different approaches should also help, although I have to say once again that Mr. Heavey's presentation is all that you could wish.
I'm used to larger, corded routers th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.
Your squeeze might be enough mine on the other hand might be too much. Very strong forearms. Ask my doctor. He said squeeze i did he yelled now stop! Oops.
I can't believe this guy after all he's thanking the audience.... no man we should thank you for you time to share your experience with us .... thank you

Great video. Thank you for spending your time with us.
I thought I had a good basic understanding of a router, I was wrong. So much information, I will be watching this over and over. Thank you so much.
You sir are a Jedi master.I feel like I just got a lifetime of experience on routers in 1 hour. Thank you for your time in doing this.
Wow. Not often I applaud a TH-cam video! I wish I’d seen this before I got started! So good, should be essential training before being let loose on wood. Thank you Sir, excellent!
I'm actually out of breath and I didn't say a word!! Great job you can feel the passion in in your work especially when you think you forgot to tell a complete stranger a small detail that would otherwise be irrelevant. Thank you for that passion. Central Indiana.
The best router presentation I have ever watched. I learned so much on router operation, selection and safety! Thanks Jim!

@Hello Jose how are you doing
Is there a Part 2 to this series? I'd really love for him to show us techniques on how to use the routers and various bits.
Absolutely brilliant, got some great advice from this as a novice
Watching this really made me realize how much I don't know!

I saw a woodworker drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's

LOL I don’t know why but your comment made me think of the Escape song (the piña colada song) and Werewolves of London combined.
Excellent, I sure wish I had watched this BEFORE I screwed up my 1/2" Collet. Great video.

Some good tips here even a pro will pick up some.
@Hello Davis how are you doing
Wow !
This guy is GOOD !!
this is gold !!
thank you
Really great info for a beginner - I learned a lot. Though it's making me think the heavy duty router I found used is overkill for me :-)
He makes a great comment about higher rated vs what works, for, you. I have a really nice Porter cable. It works great in my table but freehand it is not so good. I have a cheap old craftsman. Freehand it's awesome.
What are your recommendations for a different types of routers for a small woodshop?
i own a ridgid plunge router that you almost need to stand on it to plunge it can i change the springs ot just remove them
