I have a 2006 Honda pilot. She is near 400000 miles on her. I to intend on riding this beast forever. My car just hit the overheating point. I am also looking at replacing 02 censer and my cats. I have a minor leak and just know it is because I cracked a seal trying to replace my oil pan. I am completely going into this on my own. So I have learned a few things. I love my pilot and wish you the best on your vehicle.
Thanks for the video. I have to change my thermostat for different reasons. Kept getting an intermittent p0116 and a p0118. My Pilot reached operating temp in 2 min idle. So my thermostat is stuck open. Bought a Mahle brand thermostat from Amazon. ~$22 and it comes with a gasket. I wanted to save money over OEM one. Also there's a lot of counterfeit parts online. Mahle is a reputable brand. I verified online through the QR code in the packaging as a Genuine Mahle part. The piece of mind was worth every dollar.
I second replacing the radiator cap and checking your fans. To check for the head gasket leak, warm it up without the radiator cap on. If there is a leak and you rev it, you will see bubbles coming up. Also, if you do the timing belt, look online for a kit with all the OEM parts. It was surprisingly available and cheap enough. Recommend replacing both idler pulley bolts; apparently they can have issues.
I had to remove the head against the fire wall on mine to replace 2 bent exhaust valve on cylinder 1, it wasn't hard at all. I'm a Honda guy,own a lot of j series motor, I doubt u blew a head gasket these motor go to 400k and up with proper maintenance. Check your fans make sure they're coming on. Run it with cap of and if u see it spitting up antifreeze then your getting exhaust gas in your cooling system. If u have to do the head gasket you can re-use your head studs, honda recommends it just can't torque the last 90 degrees if you reuse it. Did mine 5 months ago and still running beautiful.
What a difference looking under the hood of your Pilot to mine. I'm in WA and mines a 2006 with 155K. Under the hood it still looks like new except for some dust. Totally rust free underneath. We've made two round trips to the East coast with it and it is a great road trip vehicle. We even spent some time in your home state. Anyway, best of luck with the repairs!
@@elsiervo225 not too well. Unfortunately I totaled it last year. But, while I had it I didn't do anything to rustproof it. Cars don't rust much at all here in Washington State.
On most cars replacing the thermostat is the first and cheapest fix for this kind of problem. Rock Auto is my favorite choice for parts. Put some petroleum jelly on your battery terminals. You will prevent problems with poor electrical contact.
First, make sure the fan is running. Forward motion will cool the engine if the fans are not operating. If you're driving and it's still overheating you have a flow issue. First thing to check would be the thermostat at that point. Water pumps do fail, but it's much less likely to be the culprit. Throwing parts at the problem will end in frustration and an empty wallet if you don't do some basic troubleshooting first.
Mines a 2003 pilot... the valve adjustment/ spark plugs are quite tedious but fun. Takes a bit of time to make sure there is the right gap with the feeler gauge. I’m not sure if there is something out there on Amazon still, but I was able to find a complete set of gaskets - valve cover, intake, spark plug seals, and head gaskets for about 40$. I haven’t used the head gaskets but the rest I installed and are holding up great so a more inexpensive gasket set might not be a bad option. I went with the aisin timing belt kit, it is the most expensive at 200$ but I’d hate to destroy the engine because of a cheap kit. I’ve put about 30,000 miles on with the new timing belt kit with no issues. 👍
My 03 pilot is doing the exact same thing. Gets hot at idle...cools off when i take off....leaking coolant out or the reservoir ...can you update me on your pilots current status please. Ive got a thermostat getting it put on tonight.
My pilot is doing the same thing. I changed the radiator but still have the over heating issue. When you said the radiator would smell like gas well mine does smell like gas and the water gets pushed into my resiovore . This helped me figure mine out
Call me crazy but I might be buying a 2006 pilot with 383,000 miles original engine and trans with no signs of engine or trans problems! What you think I really want to see how many miles these pilots can go with good maintenance
@@GotterAdventure yes it’s rust free I even checked out the rear subframe no rust not even surface rust . Engine and trans solid owner provided a stack of service records all done at Honda trans flush on time timing belt , water pump the works so it was well taken care of I’m just trying to get it for the right price
How did it work out? Did you get it? I have 206k on mine and it runs great. I'm going on a 3k road trip next month and not worried at all. I've put 55k on mine since I got it with very little maintenance.
Hey man just got back from Uwharrie my self and got a year pass, hit me up on Instagram when you think about heading that way, anyways with the preventive maintenance I see you do, Ill be very hard for the head gasket to be the issue. So before you go down the head gasket route, make sure the fans are turning on ( when they go out, the car tends to overheat on traffic and cools back down when you start moving), get a new oem radiator cap and rent a cooling system pressure kit from the auto parts to see if the system has a leak. If the cooling system fails to hold pressure, it doesn't automatically means the head gasket is bad, make sure nothing in the cooling system is wet, even a tiny leak small enough to hold coolant but big enough to let air into the system could cause your engine to overheat by allowing air bubbles into the system. Good luck man 🤙🏾 📸 crv_wander
Thanks, and I am sorry I didn't send you an invite :( I will let you know next time we head that way. It must have been the thermostat because it hasn't acted up since.
I watch these videos to get my tools ready before I head out..... you told me zero sizes. Hopefully your newer videos fixed that. I know more about your trips than I do about the repair..... And then you skipped like every aspect of putting it together and everything this is not a thermostat replacement video, this is a vlog
As you have noted my repair videos are vlog style. I am just a father of 5 trying to share some tips. I am not able to dedicate the time necessary to make videos that are as details as you are requesting.
I watch these to learn, whatever I possibly can, about my issue overall. The exhaust gas being released from that tube is something that's happening to my pilot. Would've never learned the reason why if I hadn't watched this. You'll probably need a ten mm tho

Thanks for the advice! I am sourcing a cap from the dealer.
Good luck, mine has 251k and running strong after a new radiator, EGR valve and alternator. My buddy has an 05 with 400k
Thanks!

My motor and vehicle is covered in mud 😂. I have never kept my engine bays ver clean.
how you been taking care of it?

I believe the Thermostat did the trick. i haven't had any issues since my replacement! And i wheeled really hard this past weekend :)

Not a bad place to start. I bought a pressure test after this video to diagnose the problem.
I have a 05, I plan on getting an entire swap from a salvage yard and rebuilding that.
That sounds like a good idea!
Love my 05

My pilot has 289xxxx miles and still runs good i always go with oem
Good call! I think oem is best, but I am frugal by necessity.
Ever since the thermostat repair have u noticed the thermometer meter creeping up at all on idle???
It has been running great since this repair! After all the trail crawling in Uwharrie National Park I am confident it was the thermostat.
Hey man I need help fixing my Honda piolt
Was the thermostat on the top or bottom hose housing?
What year is your pilot? Mine is an 06 and I just got it with 196k on it and it runs cool
My Pilot is an 07
Am I the only one wanting to know where the hell you got a chick fil a BUCKET from? Thanks for the video!

If the body is straight, and everything well maintained, and you are handy enough, a high mileage is a good buy at the right price.
