Jen pulled a Northern! Waterbottle out of that goodie bag! 😂Settle to Carlisle Line is a epic journey. Do recommend when you do the S&C is to have time to explore Settle, nice chip shop there as well.
Good old Salford Crescent. I started many hiking trips from there when I was a student at Salford Uni. I've still got old tickets to Clitheroe. Lets fast forward to somewhere more scenic...Blackburn!😂
You should definitely have a trip all the way up the S&C Jen - it's a classic route with amazing views and one I had a (small) part in help keeping open back in the 1980s (I was one of the 22,000+ people who registered an official objection to the BR closure proposals in 1983, went to the TUCC meetings, signed the petitions and travelled on it). Pleased to see this service now running in 2024 as the "de-facto" replacement for Dales Rail and loading well.
What a great sight to see so many folks going from Manchester to Ribblehead and your positive video about the opening of this service. Definitely need to report that Northern train for "suspiciously turning up ON TIME" LOL
Great journey and video, Jen. The views look amazing and it seems like you had a wonderful time there. Looking forward to seeing you explore those stations properly along that line.
Excellent video, and great to see this service running again 👍 In a change to the usual theme, Northern didn't pull a Northern, bu Jen's camera pulled a Northern instead 😅
I noted that you commented on the Dales Rail Service that closed in 2022. Many reasons were given about drivers etc but no mention of course about the fare, for example with a railcard on that Sunday Service from Preston to Carlisle was £20!!! Also for a couple of years the Blackpool North to Hellifield ran over the winter, ideal for a bit of snow and lunch at Carlisle
Very nice. Blackburn to Colne is one of only 2 isolated sections of the UK rail network I've done that's not connected to other parts, the other being Liskeard to Looe. Someday, I'll go to the north west, and A) do Blackburn from another station on the main section of railway I've done (say, Preston or Manchester), and B) do this service to tick off the unusual bit of track that is Clitheroe to Hellifield. I've done the S&C many times, but I've only done the Leeds to Skipton section (minus Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge) plus Long Preston (when I went to Bentham several years ago) and Appleby (both when the S&C was closed due to the landslip in 2017? and northbound trains terminated there, and for the Staycation Express in 2020). So much of the North West still to do, simply because it's a nightmare to visit when your parents live on the coast in Wearside...
My Dad and I did that journey on Saturday on the £10 newspaper offer, waited at Ribblehead for the next train to Carlisle and then came back on the second return journey between Ribblehead and Victoria, a great journey. In a couple of Saturdays we're thinking of trying Manchester-Ribblehead-Carlisle-Newcastle and return using the same offer. Brilliant video!
At risk of sounding quite cheesy, this video filled me with so much joy because I am a huge fan of the current adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small so seeing these vistas made me think of that. Blended into one of your videos and with another one of my interests, trains, it was delightful. I'm a happy nerd. :)
I can only whisper it here but I have recently had excellent journeys on Trans Pennine and Northern from Sheffield to Manchester and Chester to Rochdale recently.
I didn't know about this. I travelled from Whaley Bridge to Haymarket via Manchester Piccadilly and Preston today. I loved the fast 195 to PRrston and the 9 coach class 390 to Edinburgh.
Hi Jen, Good to see you back in harness after your dental woes...that must have been an enjoyable trip to Ribblehead, I did that visit when holidaying in that area a few years ago, beautifull scenery, Yorkshire is my favourite county for holidays. Glad you both enjoyed yourselves. Take care, Jon B. 🙂
As a proud Yorkshire Man looking forward to you doing the Settle to Carlisle. I recently did a drone flight one evening by Ribblehead but had the same issue with it being rather overcast, so I'm planning a return trip.
Absolute respect for the late great Mr Manchester himself Tony Wilson who identified a 500m section of abandoned line between Todmorden and Burnley. Now Burnley is connected directly with Rochdale, Manchester Victoria, Wigan and Headbolt Lane! And of course you can go to Ribblehead via Blackburn!
Great video. Excellent that this train has been introduced and I will be taking it on July 6th as part of of visit to Hawes. It’s only costing me £10 thanks to the Northern Rail all network day rover offer. Just a shame their other services are so poor it requires me to drive into Manchester first.
I would say, Northern have improved dramatically in the last year or so. They're still very far from perfect, but they're also a long way beyond their worst times
@@JenOnTheMove My biggest grip is the over use of the ‘short notice change to the timetable on the Glossop Lone and the issues surrounding the New Mills landslip which is not their fault but they could run Marple turn backs but they choose not to.
Excellent video! I wish I’d made the effort to do the first train, but my bed can be rather difficult to get out of at times! I did the second one from Manchester Victoria to Settle then back to Blackburn. However, disaster struck when I got home! I was about to download all the footage I shot when I accidentally deleted the lot! 😲😢! I had only intended to delete some old footage, but everything must’ve been selected and it was lost in the blink of an eye! I very nearly had a meltdown! 🤬🤬🤬

Been saving going up the Clitheroe line in the hope of doing this exact journey (I've already travelled on the Settle line), so it's good to see so many people come out in this video. To think this route nearly closed in full, I had no idea Clitheroe closed for 30 years before, how wrong were the bureaucrats of the mid 20th century?! They properly underestimated our love of trains, especially in the countryside. Hopefully this service will become more permanent, regional rail connectivity especially between Lancashire and Yorkshire should be improved. Also, continues to amaze me how much beautiful scenery is so close to Manchester by train.
@@JohnSmith-bx8zb What do you mean? The Yorkshire Dales Explorer ran just last Saturday (8th) and will run every Saturday for the foreseeable future. Hopefully it'll be popular enough to become permanent. Either way, quite an achievement to see a service like this come back.
They "simplified" services through the Castlefield Corridor to improve punctuality. All trains from the north now go to Manchester Airport. I can confirm that it has not improved punctuality, and it's just made it harder to get anywhere!
I don't think I'll ever be that bad 🤣 Storytime, Bryn's video from the Leven opening was delayed because he was trying to upload his video from an external hard drive, without plugging in said external hard drive 🤣🤣🤣
I believe the fare is permanent. One thing to watch out for is that it's specifically a "via Clitheroe" fare - you won't have the option to return via Leeds if your plans change!
Yes it does. The Dalesrail service from Preston doesn't exist anymore and Northern have been very keen to market this as a distinct service from that. I've heard that there's some behind the scenes drama
@@JenOnTheMove Northern may think that but I suspect that having to now change services when travelling from Blackpool to Blackburn is going to put people off. It’s that extra change to get up the S&C to the Dales is the short sighted part of the process After all it was the poor take up from Manchester that caused the original service to lose that part of the service leaving only the Blackpool leg open.
In reality there’s going to be many many more potential passengers from the large city of Manchester rather than the small town of Blackpool. 100% the right decision to run from Manchester rather than Blackpool
The change at Blackburn is less of an issue for me, it's more that it goes no further north than Ribblehead. The countryside around Dent is stunning and for me personally is the best part of the line. The other stations further north are also worth a visit. It actually makes less sense for a train starting Manchester to run short, than one from Preston.
This could run to Garsdale then along the branch to Hawes and on to Askrig. Sad to say that although the track bed is there the rails are lifted and the National Park are intending to make the track bed into a bridle path. What a waste
