So many negative comments. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️. How about everyone just be kind and realize she’s doing it her way and the best she can. She’s obviously doing well and taking great care of her ewes. Yes some things could be easier if she changed them but this is her barn. Maybe you should volunteer to help and see how hard this is. Sandi....I applaud you. You’re doing amazing. Do it your way. I love your videos and love escaping my day by watching you.

Yes, I agree. Seems to be a lot of experts out there, do this, do that.
I even searched online, an most farmers trim the hooves the same as Sandi. A few use grinders, but then use a lifting station, and have to securely grasp the hoof, so the sheep doesn't jump around. (all were bigger men). I can just imagine the damage with one slip of a grinder.
      (The grinders are $300+)

HI Sandi. I'm going to make a dog training recommendation, feel free to disregard if it doesn't match your training style. I highly suggest the "Place" command. it's something you can train inside the house. It will be harder for her to hold it in such a high distraction environment like the barn, but if you train it inside the house, she'll know the command and then you may just have to give it more often in the barn to start. I don't know if there is a spot in the barn you can put a mat for her to use that isn't constantly in the way. While there are special outdoor, easy to hose down mats you can buy, a simple cheap bathroom mat from a big box store works just fine. If she has a spot to go to when she is in the way, and she knows she needs to stay there until you say so, she'll learn to control her excitement level around the sheep. Sheep cannot always be party time, and making her hold a place command in the barn will force her to tone down her energy level while around the sheep. I would suggest getting her really good at it in the house first before you try it in the barn so you are setting her up for success.

We have something similar to this with our GSD, if he’s getting too excited we say “cage.” It’s not actually a cage but just a hallway with a gate. He goes in there straight away and it’s genuinely one of the best commands I’ve taught him, super helpful in a lot of situations

Ok I watched this vlog 2 years after my first hoof trimming. Sandi had obtained an electronic trimmer and it was much much faster. The sheep seemed to appreciate the electric clippers too (less time in that contraption). Clarissa was appreciative,or at least her hand was. But I do like seeing all the care.
21/2 years later Sandi has had a couple of wool finished product sales. It's amazing. I am so happy for her.

Love watching all your vids. Been watching for awhile now & as a cattle farmer I know how much blood, sweat, & tears come into farming. It's a never ending list of jobs but eventually the list gets shorter. Keep up the great work & I can say, as far as the negative comments, just block & ignore. People who make those comments usually dont have a clue how to farm anything. And yes, you are so right about keeping calm & being in the right frame of mind when you work livestock. If you get in there & act like a idiot they will all turn into idiots & odds are someone's gonna get hurt. Best to stay calm @ all times. I did find it interesting on how the first one sets the tone for the rest & what amazes me is the way sheep see shadows as the "black hole." Wow!! Keep up the great work, you got this gal!! 🙂

As a working Aussie owner myself, perhaps start teaching her to down near the crush without the sheep just a few minutes a day with high value treats. Work your way up from even 10 seconds or so to small minute increments. When she has a good down for 10 minutes or so, start using one sheep to teach with that distraction and again move that up over time. Just a few minutes a day in your daily chores. A solid down will pay off big time.

Personally, that's THE absolute *must* for me, with *ANY* dog. Before anything else. Bound in cement. Voice AND HAND! My daughter has recently commented that NOW she sees the value in that cemented "down." One word(or movement). Instant reaction, every situation. No difference. No hesitation. No argument. Even facial expression. Instantaneous. And that she can *trust it'll happen*. She doesn't even have to check to see anymore. She just knows if she says it, it'll happen. And as a mom? It's actually an *odd* (but incredibly gratifying) feeling to have one of your adult children say "thank you for.."

Wear some tight hugging gloves, as in garden gloves...they are rubbery on the palm side but really stretchy on top, and still allows you to do fine finger point work, and your hands will not slip as much on the snippers.

Lucky lambing toque on Saturday? And it's not boring. We learn too. I wonder if a small brass wire brush, or huge 'toothbrush' with a magnet attached so you could just 'slap' it onto the side of the chute (I hope you can understand what I mean by this - it's so you can put it down quickly rather than fiddle with a pocket or having to pick it up from the floor and you can find it quickly when you need it again - second thought - a hoofpick that has a brush would be an even better tool ) would quicken getting through the crap on the hoof and do a better job then the side of your trimmer? I know it's another tool, another step, but done right, might make the job faster? And I've always found that applying a fabric bandaid over spots I know are going to blister can sometimes prevent them

It's funny, we had a sheep that acted like a goat and a goat that acted like a sheep. We always seemed to get the animals that were a bit confused. Pur dog hated meat or dog food, but loved lettuce, and ate rabbit pellets and bird seed. Lol! You're doing a great job with your sheep and lambs. You really show what dedication it takes to manage a farm. Many people have no idea how hard farmers work. I love that you and so many others, give people more appreciation for what it takes to provide food, wool, etc. for food and clothing and for many farmers, milk and milk products also. Thank you Sandi and the many farmers that also provide for us. I really miss our farm so much!

Please read these comments with the understanding that most suggestions come from caring or from ignorance. I've read most of them and some sound pretty gruff - but obviously well intentioned as it is a suggestion to make life easier for you and /or the sheep.
Also, if you get "suggestions" from people which may have come from people with an agenda - just remember you can silence them, and do it.

The mind, and hard-wired instincts of a flock/large herd animal is a very, very amazing thing!!!
Thank you for sharing your process and especially your thoughts on what you are doing and why! Your wisdom applies to so much more than raising only sheep❣️
I do wish there was a machine for flipping goats for their pedicures! Their backs are too boney (un-padded with fat and fluff) to rest their weight on it; but there must be away to re-engineer one of those machines just enough to make it work. The horns (goat handles) are another consideration though ... they tend to catch on equipment, but big horns are like a convenient halter I never have to take off! 😄 🐐

Lonna Jochetz would a pulley system off a tractor help decrease the difficulty in turning the sheep upside down?

I know nothing about the care of sheep. I do find this an interesting channel though. I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t a easier way to trim their hoves.that method would be fine if a person only had a few sheep but my word that seems like it would take forever to do all those sheep.. it’s part of being a farmer.. long hours and hard work.. I admire that I really do.. it sure seems like there must be an easier way though

In any kind of farming, you learn something new just about every day...if you're paying attention. Every time I think I've seen it all...the animals prove me wrong.
I wish I lived closer. I'd gladly help you with the hoof trimming, and whatever else you could use help with. I LOVE your set up!

In a world you can be anything why not be kind. It is hard enough working but then having to deal with negativity as well on top. Please be considerate when you comment and maybe allow this lady to farm her own way. Not everyone needs help if she does I’m sure she would ask for it. But overall please remember to look at your comments and as my mum says, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
