      @Andreaz-64 Tens of billions of species have existed on Earth, but fewer than ten that we know could build a campfire. I think that Clarke meant intelligent, technological species for "we". However, "we" have only ever decided that it is immoral to kill, eat and make handbags out of "us".

      @Andreaz-64 I heard that a goldfish passed the mirror test, where it recognized its own reflection as itself. We may find intelligent octopus like creatures below the ice of Ceres or Enceladus. Let's hope they won't taste like chicken.

    There's no need to search for beings more advanced than ourselves. They're already here and always have been. They're just smart enough to keep their existence from the public until we're ready for that knowledge.

    How do aliens exclude creation? A creator could have created life in other places in the universe. Finding aliens will not disprove creation.

    I'm skeptical about radio signals, as a long lasting indicator of technological intelligence. Techno-signatures, e.g. regarding the atmosphere of a planet, or the star, maybe a more reliable way to go.

  • @jdc7923
    @jdc7923 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a practical matter, I think it would make more sense to simply search for other life in the universe. A planet without life obviously won't have intelligence life. We now know that any planet that has life and an atmosphere, will have an atmosphere that's in a recognizable type of disequilibrium that life causes. All we have to detect is that disequilibrium.
    We have learned much about early conditions in our solar system, and how planets of various types form, and about the many solar system catastrophes that threaten life. This knowledge tells that there is a much greater chance of the existence of simple life on a planet than there is of advanced, intelligent life, because complex life takes a lot longer to develop, and is extinguished more easily by random solar system events.

  • @bobrussell3602
    @bobrussell3602 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The most significant fact is that we now know that, as Mr Kuhn said, there are billions of earthlike planets in our galaxy. There are billions of galaxy's. Therefore there are billions of billions of earthlike planets in the universe. The implication of this, is that we are definitely not alone. But it could be that intelligent life is typified by octopuses, not technological beings like us. Best guess is that it's a mixture.

    • @ik1408
      @ik1408 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, basically you are proposing that when one uses Drake's equation to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations capable of interstellar communication, one might assume that the term of the equation estimating the number of intelligent living worlds that become technological to be extremely small. That's a reasonable assumption.

    • @torcher88
      @torcher88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assuming no God, the odds against life arising dwarf the number of planets in the universe -- it's like one person hitting the Powerball a million times in a row. Even if you get life, it's got to take root in a hostile environment and diversify and evolve into a biosphere before you get anything like an octopus, if things even get to that stage. Not a very likely state of affairs.

    • @jareknowak8712
      @jareknowak8712 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If Aliens are octopusses, that probably means that we have to wait another milion years or so to communicate with them.

    Thank you Mr Khune and Mr Davies for one of the most interesting videocasts about a fascinating subject. I try to do my own research on any subject and alien life forms has brought me to the conclusion that if I were to wager, I’d bet that this planet has been visited by otherworldly beings. That being said, it has been reported that every 6 minutes, a UFO is seen somewhere around our world. What I think must be factored in is our belief in the speed of light as an absolute certainty, and by that I mean in our time, it is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light. What I think is probably coming down the pike is that our physics will have an upgrade and that there will be found a way for traveling beyond the speed of light in a way that we cannot imagine, and this could be by passageways that are there but cannot be accessed yet with our technology, and I mean tunnels of a sort that are a fast track to other solar systems. What I really think will be fascinating is a thorough examination of the Earth’s moon, because I cannot accept the fact that this celestial object which is 400 times smaller than the sun and 400 times closer to the sun than the Earth and therefore gives us a perfect eclipse makes any sense at all. The sheer improbability of the moon happening to be in just the right orbit, the right distance from the Earth, the right size to have perfect eclipse is off-the-charts. That the Earth would turn on its axis every 6 hours without the moon and therefore be devoid of life also makes me think that there may be intelligent life behind its creation in that life on Earth could not exist without the moon. Gentlemen, there are many things that don’t make a lot of sense which is why your discussion is music to my ears, because we are dying to know what’s going on with some of the Earth’s mysteries and especially what life forms exist elsewhere.

    • @Skyborn-
      @Skyborn- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Moon is in orbit around the Earth. It is not 400 times closer to the Sun at any point in time.

  • @jayjames7055
    @jayjames7055 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    We search because we don't know if it's there or not. However if we look at the odds of intelligent life developing on earth multiplied by each goldilocks incident or great barrier we can see that the odds of life developing in a universe are < (less than) 1 in 1 billion (universes) regardless of drake. Presumably we are in the midst of a series of universes of which an infinitesimally small number develop intelligent life, separated by unfathomable aeons at best.

  • @DaGubah501

      true. Drake formula fall flat on - the question: Three things have to happen to get intelligent life like a human - 1> A planet and a solar system exactly similar to the earth and the sun, located in the same safe zone in a galaxy.2> Life from non-life. 3> One specie (man) rising above the billions of species with consciousness (to build his science and civilization). >All these chances and probabilities need to come together.

    • @ik1408
      @ik1408 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. considering how our understanding of the history of life on Earth and the properties of exoplanets have changed, Drake's equation is too general to serve its purpose.

      @@ik1408 Your comments / observations are intelligent. Now, I don't mean to be sarcastic or nasty, But with this video, as with so many others, I find that the most sensible / intelligent comments are at the top & as you scroll down they get sillier / dumber. I am genuinely puzzled by this. WHY ?

    • @ik1408
      @ik1408 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobrussell3602 I would guess it has something to do with TH-cam algorithms. TH-cam wants its users to be engaged with comments and discussions. To achive that, TH-cam would place more sensible/intelligent comments at the top, encouraging its users to keep reading the comments and, perhaps, to reply.
      The question is how would TH-cam algorithms distinguish between smart and stupid comments? In my opinion, that can be possible if algorithms trace and analyze all the comments submitted by users. Information analyzed by the algorithms can include data as follows: if those comments get many likes and replies, if the comments encourage replies that seem constructive and not hostile, if there are any words in those comments that the algorithms identify as silly/offensive. Also, the length of sentences and their complexity speak a lot about an author's intelligence.
      Is it technically possible? Definitely. Google and TH-cam possess almost-AI software and very powerful servers.
      Now, another question is why would TH-cam want more comments? After all, TH-cam makes money on views of the videos, not reading comments. The reason behind might be more serious and far-reaching - it might be profiling users. If one brings together all the information about a person's internet searches, purchases and thoughts expressed in comments (which people mistakenly believe are anonymous) - that gives someone in-depth knowledge and profile of the person, or billions of persons. Knowledge is power; and control also comes with power.

      “Dictate rules”? Scientifically speaking, these “rules” proven effective, sociologically, and without “gods” interference.
      A cogent roadmap for behavior and perspective might be another way to phrase that, god or aliens. Religion has, perhaps in a crude way, shown us the way forward, in a way we can understand. Yet like teenagers, we often reject what we are told and have to find out for ourselves. Possibly a lesson better learned, but progress is slow.

      “We can’t feel our motion through space, *nor has any physical experiment ever proved that the Earth actually is in motion.”* Historian, *Lincoln Barnett,* foreword by *Albert Einstein*
      “Since the time of Copernicus we have known that the Earth rotates on its axis and moves around the sun. Even this simple idea, so clear to everyone, was not left untouched by the advance of science.” *Albert Einstein*
      “Briefly, everything occurs as if the Earth were at rest…” Physicist, *Henrick Lorentz*
      “A great deal of research has been carried out concerning the influence of the Earth’s movement. The results were always negative.” Physicist, *Henri Poincaré*
      “There is no planetary observation by which we on Earth can prove that the Earth is moving in an orbit around the sun.” Physicist, *I. Bernard Cohen*
      “The failure of the many attempts to measure terrestrially any effects of the earth’s motion…” Physicist, *Wolfgang Pauli*
      “In the effort to explain the Michelson-Morley experiment…the thought was advanced that the Earth might be stationary….Such an idea was not considered seriously, since it would mean in effect that our Earth occupied the omnipotent position in the universe, with all the other heavenly bodies paying homage by revolving around it.” Physicist, *Arthur S. Otis*
      “….The easiest explanation was that the earth was fixed in the ether and that everything else in the universe moved with respect to the earth and the ether…” Physicist, *James Coleman*
      “This ‘null’ result was one of the great puzzles of physics at the end of the nineteenth century. One possibility was that...v would be zero and no fringe shift would be expected. But this implies that the earth is somehow a preferred object; only with respect to the earth would the speed of light be c as predicted by Maxwell’s equations. This is tantamount to assuming that the earth is the central body of the universe.” Physicist, *Douglas C. Giancoli*
      "I have read with much interest Messsrs. Michelson and Morley's wonderfully delicate experiment attempting to decide the important question as to how far the ether is carried along by the earth...I would suggest that almost the only hypothesis that can reconcile this opposition is thet the length of material bodies changes..." *George Fitzgerald*
      "...Again, once more for the record : it has been shown at least six different ways this century alone that the equations and physics used by NASA to launch satellites are identical to the equations derived from a geocentric universe. Thus, if the space program is proof of anything, it proves geocentricity and disproves heliocentrism." *Astronomer, Dr. Bouw*
      "I have to confess that I was bothered by the fact that the Axis of Evil seemed linked to a special direction in our solar system...But now we have completely independent data...This is a hint of something really big." *Astrophysicist, Max Tegmark*
      "Why is the solar system cosmically aligned?" *Astrophysicist, Dragan Huterer*
      "The apparent alignment in the cosmic microwave background in one particular direction through space is called "evil" because it undermines our ideas about the standard cosmological model...the Copernican Principle seems to be in jeopardy." *Astrophysicist, Ashok K. Singal*
      "One of the most surprising findings is that the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave radiation temperatures at large angular scales do not match those predicted by the standard (Big Bang) model."
      *The European Space Agency, Planck Probe, 2013*

      “So which is real, the Ptolemaic or Copernican system? Although it is not uncommon for people to say that Copernicus proved Ptolemy wrong, that is not true….one can use either picture as a model of the universe, for our observations of the heavens can be explained by assuming either the earth or the sun to be at rest.” Physicist, *Stephen Hawking*
      “…the Earth-centered system…is in reality absolutely identical with the system of Copernicus and all computation of the places of the planets are the same for the two systems.” Astronomer, *J. L. E. Dryer*
      “…it is very important to acknowledge that the Copernican theory offers a very exact calculation of the apparent movements of the planets…even though it must be conceded that, from the modern standpoint practically identical results could be obtained by means of a somewhat revised Ptolemaic system….It makes no sense, accordingly, to speak of a difference in truth between Copernicus and Ptolemy: both conceptions are equally permissible descriptions. What has been considered as the greatest discovery of occidental wisdom, as opposed to that of antiquity, is questioned as to its truth value.” Physicist, *Hans Reichenbach*
      “…I tell my classes that had Galileo confronted the Church in Einstein’s day, he would have lost the argument for better reasons. You may use my name if you wish.” Mathematician, *Carl E. Wulfman*
      “There is no planetary observation by which we on Earth can prove that the Earth is moving in an orbit around the sun. Thus all Galileo’s discoveries with the telescope can be accommodated to the system invented by Tycho Brahe just before Galileo began his observations of the heavens. In this Tychonic system, the planets…move in orbits around the sun, while the sun moves in an orbit around the Earth in a year. Furthermore, the daily rotation of the heavens is communicated to the sun and planets, so that the Earth itself neither rotates nor revolves in an orbit.” Physicist, *I Bernard Cohen*
      “Tycho Brahe proposed a dualistic scheme, with the Sun going around the Earth but with all other planets going around the Sun, and in making this proposal he thought he was offering something radically different from Copernicus. And in rejecting Tycho’s scheme, Kepler obviously thought so too. Yet in principle there is no difference.” Astronomer, *Fred Hoyle*
      Over the last decade, a number of anomalous cosmological observations have emerged which do not make sense according to the Copernican Principle, the latest being the Planck satellite results of March 2013. While the science behind the findings is complex, to put it simply, the Copernican Principle requires that any variation in the radiation from the Cosmic Microwave Background (thermal radiation assumed to be left over from the ‘Big Bang’) be more or less randomly distributed throughout the universe. However, the results of three separate missions, starting with the WMAP satellite in 2001, has shown anomalies in the background radiation which are aligned directly with the plane of our solar system and the equator of the Earth. This never-before-seen alignment of the Earth results in an axis through the universe, which scientists have dubbed the ‘Axis of Evil’, owing to the shocking implications for current models of the cosmos.
      *Laurence Krauss,* American theoretical physicist and cosmologist, commented in 2005:
      "When you look at [the cosmic microwave background] map, you also see that the structure that is observed, is in fact, in a weird way, correlated with the plane of the earth around the sun. Is this Copernicus coming back to haunt us? That’s crazy. We’re looking out at the whole universe. There’s no way there should be a correlation of structure with our motion of the earth around the sun?-?the plane of the earth around the sun?-?the ecliptic. That would say we are truly the center of the universe."
      “Thus, even now, three and a half centuries after Galileo’s condemnation by the Inquisition, it is still remarkably difficult to say categorically whether the earth moves...” Physicist, *Julian Barbour*

      “What happened when the experiment was done in 1887? There was never, never, in any orientation at any time of year, any shift in the interference pattern; none; no shift; no fringe shift; nothing. What’s the implication? Here was an experiment that was done to measure the speed of the earth’s motion through the ether. This was an experiment that was ten times more sensitive than it needed to be. It could have detected speeds as low as two miles a second instead of the known 20mps that the earth as in its orbital motion around the sun. It didn’t detect it. What’s the conclusion from the Michelson-Morley experiment? The implication is that the earth is not moving…” Physicist, *Richard Wolfson*
      *Fred Hoyle* has argued that a subtler understanding of Einstein’s theories reveals they may actually *slightly favor an Earth-centered model.* Had Galileo had Hoyle at his elbow, he might have produced the book that would have pleased the pope and not have been tried for heresy!….There is another criterion by which theories are judged, and, for better or worse, it shows that modern scientists do have a certain kinship with those recalcitrant seventeenth-century scholars they so disdain. When new theories and the implications of new discoveries disagree with the way a scientist personally feels the universe ought to run, he or she is reluctant to accept them.” *Kitty Ferguson,* science writer

      Sounds like a personality problem.
      You need a personal hell and damnation spirit guide. Someone too tell you right from wrong. Even if its a totally messed up moral theology. Too offer you a carrot (redemption by gods grace)and a stick (a separation from god). Like you are not adult enough too figure it out on your own. Which says more about you than it does your god.
