  • The Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair is one of the biggest reenacting/living history events of its kind in the eastern U.S.. Last week I was camping at the 2013 version of the event and I'd like to share some of the goings on in a short series of videos. In this episode I'll give you the general tenor of the event by showing you the campgrounds and the vendors at the Market Fair.

This event truly was awesome. Met some very nice vendors, got a bargain on some real quality equipment (nice .291 ball mould for buckshot, awesome pack basket, beautiful leather possibles bag, and others). The people giving the tour of the Fort itself were very knowledgeable and tolerant of my incessant badgering and stupid questions. :)
Can't wait to go back next year!!

This was the nineteenth annual Ft. Fred Market fair. If you google it you can get next year's dates.

I love this events. For those in my neck of the woods way out on the frontier. ( 1780's frontier that is) The Fair at New Boston , In George Rogers Clark State park in Ohio. Is a fun event very much like this one. It takes place at the end of August I believe. Check out there web sight. Before it was the village of New Boston, It was a Shawnee village, Where a young man named Tecumseh age about 11 was living. Great history at the sight.

I keep two big buckets of water at my fire area, everyone I know keeps at least one bucket of water near the fire. Most tents are made of fire-retardent canvas.

If you took them you'd have to keep them out of sight. I generally lock my phone in the truck for the duration, and use a pocket watch.

I made most of my 18th century shirts as well as the deer skin leggings. I didn't bring any rifles that I built. I brought a TVM fowler

Nice work on the clothes, deer skin leggings must have been fun to make and wear, being so traditional. On the rifle front, it's a shame. I know that in a video where you shot the rifle you made, you said it didn't look too good, but I think it looks great, and a lot of other people commented that it fires off such a smooth action. :)

What a blast that must have been. I bet all reenacting ends when it comes to taking a credit card for one of those flintlocks.

You look a lot like the writer character (Saul Rubinek) from Unforgiven... the one that was following gene hackman and the other gun fighter around

Did you take the powder rifle you made yourself to the event? And I'm curious if you made any crafts to take with you for personal use, such as pouches, garments etc :) I've always loved the thoughts of such things, but I always move around so much I can hardly find time to make equipment or be even around in time for these events.

Not to take away from all the fun, but with all those tents and grass and candle lanterns, are there any fire safety precautions taken?

I am surprised Maryland allowed this since their new gun laws have been approved.
