Country music artists did a tribute concert to Lionel Richie a few years back where they took turns singing the songs he wrote for them in his honor. The part everyone was waiting for, Kenny singing "Lady". Kenny surprises Lionel by bringing him up on stage together. I'm a singer with that raspy voice. I have never sang this song to a woman that she didn't melt into my arms. This video was done in 1980. Kenny Rodgers died this year. I did get to see him once. He was a great entertainer.
kenny tells the story of this song on A&E total request live. he had asked lionel ritchie to help him do a country version of an R&B song. ritchie started out with just "lady" and that was all kenny needed. when it came time to record all there was was the first verse. as kenny was recording ritchie went to the bathroom and wrote the second verse. no one could sing the song better than kenny in this vesrion and no one could write a song containing the deep emotions of love like ritchie. good, excellent music, song with hearts full of emotion transcend everything. they mow down the hedgerows, bulldoze the walls that we or society has built. i would encourage those of younger years, btw i'm 64, to go back years, to the 60's and 70's and listen to artist of those years. no auto tone snd such tech stuff like today and hear the raw talent, the music, song and words. watch peoples first reaction to hearing artist like tom jones, who at 80 years still sings like he did in his 30's( watch on youtube the voice uk) or as many called it "blue eyed soul," also known as the righteous brothers(especially bobby hatfield doing unchained melody.) listen to such songs like billy preston and syreeta "with you i'm born again." duets with linda rondstat and arron neville.
7 years old when I first listen to this and I loved it, I can only imagine my mom listening to it, my father loved him too but I did not understand y since my father couldn't understand oh speak English that well, I guess he knew what good music was. Great Reaction!

No one told a story like Kenny. Each of his songs could draw you in to the story so intently that I, anyway, would drop what I'm doing to listen. And always done with that voice that was so smooth, yet gravelly, simultaneously.
Kenny Rogers had such a charismatic, gentlemanly voice and personality. He looked so relaxed in this concert.
