Dick Butkus was a pretty scary football player, but he came across as a really big lovable guy. RIP man.

I'm old enough to be able to watch Him years ago. What a giant he was in football. Dick Butkus, you will be missed for ever

Rest in peace Butkus, Bear Down. Closest thing we had left to Papa Bear.

Butkus said he never tried to hurt other players if the game was preseason

You asked what team had a better draft than the Bears taking Sayers and Butkus at 3 and 4 in 1965, aside from the Ravens taking Ogden and Lewis in 1994.
The only one that compares to or beats that, IMHO - the 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers draft of Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, Mike Webster and John Stallworth.
Four picks - four Hall of Famers who anchored the first great dynasty of the Super Bowl era and the team of the decade.
That said, Butkus was a singular talent that we've seen replicated only a few times in NFL history (LT is the next who comes to mind) in that he defined both a team and its city. Eighty years is a damn good life and boy did he have one.

Bears' '65 Draft included Butkus and Sayers but also Dick Gordon and Steve DeLong. Gordon was a Really Good WR for the Bears. Had a couple of Pro Bowl seasons.
DeLong signed with San Diego and had a Good Career with the Chargers. He did play His last season with the Bears in '72. All in all, a Great Draft for the Bears.

Andrew, everything you said is just code for the truth: Dick Butkus was as dirty on the field as his name sounded

Geez is that worshipping tiresome... Yes Butkus was great, yes he became an actor, yes people leave the earth at some point... but heck, he was just a football player. There were more icons in Chicago. Basically the whole 85 team, plus Ditka the player, Sayers, etc... So stop the worshipping, be journalist only.

What a supreme loser troll of a comment. If you were to make this comment to any one of those players you listed, they would rip your lips off for such clueless disrespect.

If anyone had to pick a "Mr. Chicago Bears."

Rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones for their loss, and for us fans who loved him too. I take some comfort knowing the impact his passion for the Bears that inspired so many.

Andrew, nice tribute to Mr. Butkus. Being 80, I was able to see him play at Wrigley, and a large framed picture of Dick hung in my family room in Santa Cruz, CA 48 years ago. He's still the image of the NFL...to many of us.

What's scarier is that the pick for Butkus came from the Steelers. Imagine him as part of the Steel Curtain!
