  • Farming - not on land - but in the sea. Budding entrepreneur and recipient of the most ever grant funding by a College of Charleston student, Sam is working to grow a new sustainable food supply.
Sam Norton, founder of the seawater agriculture company Heron Farms, is a graduate student in the College of Charleston’s Master of Environmental Studies program. He was raised on the coast of South Carolina surrounded by marsh and ocean, where he first developed his interest in the role of halophytes in the coastal environment.
Norton’s research on the use of saltmarsh plants for seawater agriculture won the South Carolina Department of Agriculture’s annual ACRE competition and his start-up Heron Farms won first place in Charleston’s Harbor Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program. He is currently writing his Master’s thesis on the commercial feasibility of indoor seawater hydroponic agriculture and the effect of LED spectra on halophyte biomass and morphology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

There have been a lot of experiments with plants to see which ones are the most salt tolerant. One of the plants that showed a lot of promise was potatoes. Not all potatoes, but certain kinds. There are other food plants that also are salt tolerant. Sea water is actually reported to be good for the home gardener, used with discretion and diluted, both as a foliar feed and as a ground feed. I live within walking distance of salt water, and will be running some of my own experiments with very diluted sea water as both a foliar feed and ground feed. Sea water has all the minerals in it that plants and people need. But they are mixed with the sodium that will harm plants if given too much. Sodium in very small amounts doesn't hurt plants. But it seems that more needs to be done with this kind of exploration, both in the lab and in industry. Desalination plants exist in many parts of the world, but California, which is dying on the vine for lack of water, is not utilizing this same technology that many other countries are, with great success. They say it's ecologically damaging, as the salt is put back in the ocean, increasing salinity, which kills fish and other organisms. But salt can be buried in deep pits out in the desert or some place, deep in the earth, away from underground springs. Meanwhile, this kind of exploration is very much needed.

Remember that desalination is an extremely energy intensive process, and so if it became widespread in a place like California, it may only increase our dependence on fossil fuels. Which is exactly what got us into a climate crisis in the first place. Good on you for doing your own salt water experiments though, I wish you luck!

What are the toxin levels in these plants? We know the ocean and the fish are full of toxins why wouldn't the plants be? I love this idea and we do have to do things differently than we have in the past.

I’m very ambivalent about this talk. The good part is the desalination through plants! That’s awesome and I’m for more food growing.
However, I think stopping desertification through animals farming is much easier goal and bigger pay off as it use a much more traditional and less expensive way of farming. Please see Allan Savory excellent Ted talk about it.
Of course we can do both. But what need to be stopped in this new agriculture revolution are industry that are making the soil bare as they do not even own it. Have zero respect for carbon capture through composting and renewal of the soil health.

There are saltwater system plants Co. that can pump ocean water and filter the salt out making the water pure for consumption. And the salt itself can be sold for consumption nothing is going to waste. The types of systems I'm speaking of should be used in desert landscape where the salt is already rich in the soil . By testing the soil you will know the amount of salts that already exist within them. And the purified water will help grow plants for food in those areas. Doing these things will bring life to the desert areas. And expanding places for people to live. It should not only be used for agriculture purposes. And planting trees that produce fruit and nuts will create some shade on them hot days as well. And some places need to be created for wildlife to live free also With all types of plants. the plant kingdom and animal Kingdom can thrive as well. And None of these things should be done using any type of artificial chemicals. As in fertilizers or pest control things of that such. Best fertilizers come direct from the animals. And the forest itself create the topsoil. That is consumed by bugs and animals making the soil rich in nutrients. For the forest to thrive. All things have a natural order and all things are joined unto others. Examine and study the natural order of life in those two kingdoms. Speak with the Indians elders for their wise. they can show you and teach you many things because they have chosen to stick with the nature of life. Knowing what is best for all.

No, we need to decrease birth rates dramatically and decrease wasteful consumption, not to figure out how to feed more and more mouths every day. This is treating symptoms, no the illness.

@MindfullEng. No , by teaching young people proper contraception methods and also teaching them that having children is optional if they do not feel like they want children, they should know that it is an option not some obligation so that they do not allow their families to push them into somethimg they do not want. We should also teach people to value children of each gender equally and not keep "trying for a boy " after 4 or 5 girls.
