The online discourse over Annabeth being played by Leah Jeffries is ridiculous. Personally, I think The author made a great decision casting her. Not only does she play the role perfectly, but it still does kind of play into breaking stereotypes about intelligence, and I'm glad for the African American kids who watch this and have a chance to see themselves in this smart, highly skilled, daughter of the goddess of wisdom.
I feel the same way. I reread the book before the premiere and there are only a few mentions of Annabeth's blonde hair. I'd rather that they cast an actress who could properly portray Annabeth sans blonde hair than cast a blonde actress who would mess up the part! Oh, and if you think the Annebeth hate is strong from some groups, you should see what's going on with Doctor Who. The new Doctor is a black man who is openly queer. And one of the specials had a trans character. Cue hateful screams from "certain" people insisting that an alien that has two hearts and can change their face can't possibly be black!
I also like it from a practicality/realism standpoint I think? Because in the books all the kids looked like their respective godly parent (in which case you'd most likely be able to tell just by looking at them, so why not extend each of the cabins for unclaimed kids who "look like they could be x" instead of dumping them all into Hermes -- but I digress). For example, all the Hermes kids had upturned noses and all the Athena kids were blonde with grey eyes. It always felt weird to me because sure, you could say that the godly genes were really strong in their appearances, but why would they all look the same if the gods can change their looks whenever they want? It always made more sense in my mind that their parentage would come through in their skills and/or personalities rather than their looks.
@@chronosclaimsall It would also make identifying kids' godly heritage harder. "Your godly parent didn't claim you? Well, based on your eyes and hair, I'd say you're Athena." That doesn't sound as good as "You're pretty clever so you might be a child of Athena." Now, children of Aphrodite could definitely be appearance based. If you looked very handsome/beautiful, you're likely from Aphrodite.
I have yet to have heard those with...issues...with the casting make a simular fuss over who plays Hermes (if you've seen the final scene from Episode 3 already, you know whom I refer to 😉). Never mind the fact that this is supposed to be the Northeastern Atlantic US, but it is very obviously being filmed in the Pacific Northwest, from the foliage. 😂
Annabeth wasn’t necessarily supposed to represent blonde women being seen as stupid when they aren’t. She was meant to represent how all women have their intelligence devalued because of their appearance, and while having a blonde girl was perfect for that at the time, it’s not really that much of a thing anymore, at least not to the extent it was. Having a black girl play the part instead is much more fitting, as historically black women have been the most devalued. Black people in general are treated as if they are inherently less intelligent, but it’s especially true for black women.
And the haters ironically prove that this was a great pick. Every time they insist that a black Annabeth can't be wise/intelligent, they show the exact stereotype that Annabeth shatters.
Very true. Not to mention the dumb blonde stereotype has been subverted in so many pieces of media for a while now across multiple genres like in legally blonde, suite life of Zack and Cody etc. But the same can't be said for black women. This is why I think casting Leah as Annabeth actually feels truer to the character and what she's supposed to represent.
I like the direction they took Clarisse's character in this episode. It's more than "she's just a bully," she has an actual reason for picking on Percy. She thinks he's lying about killing the minotaur.
I don't think she ACTUALLY thinks he didn't do it - I mean, there's proof it happened. But she wants him to say he didn't, because she feels insecure and needs SOME validation (it's something she deals with, especially considering who's her dad)
@@herbatazimbirem4141 either way, a random kid shows up just yesterday having already killed a powerful monster? You can see why she'd think he was lying.

It took a long time and many many books but I'm def a child of Dionysus, my need to have multiple different drink options at any and all times is quite proof of it...... but not the only proof.
Just be careful. Dionysus is also the god of madness. Though, with our more modern day views on "madness," I wonder if he'd team up with Apollo (the god of, among other things, healing) to create therapy.
I loved the idea of having Eris as a mother as ive been described as being quite chaotic. But if we have to stick with the typical 12 athena or hades would be interesting
My godly parent would probably be Athena. Mostly because of her dominion over arts and crafts but also often I’ll say stuff and people will be like “wow that’s actually really smart.” Despite it seeming obvious to me.
I'd love to be a child of Poseidon if I had to choose, not just because they're among the most powerful, but I love the water. Ever since I was a kid when I played superheroes I would pick water powers, to be able to control it, not to mention the other huge amount of powers Percy has at his disposal that might be spoilers
Being the son of Thanatos would have been interesting. Thanatos Is the god of death, and the one that keeps the souls in the afterlife from going back to the living world
When I first heard about the Percy Jackson books I was in my "Greek and Roman Mythology" phase (never really left it tbf, love the mythologies) and I had immediately started to think about who my God/Goddess parent were to be if I were a Demi-god. And it took me quite a while to come up with an idea because I wanted to find a God/Goddess I was the most like. I later came to the conclusion that the Goddess* that fit my "criteria" at that age was Gaia. Mother Nature
I think my godly parent might be Apollo, because he’s a creative. God of poetry, music, theatre, prophecy, medicine. I’m not sure how good I’d be at archery….
I think I'd want Apollo as my godly parent. He's the god of all forms of art, as well as the god of healing, archery, and protector of the young (whatever that means). Graphic art is my whole thing, so that's the main reason, but I also do have a fondness for archery, and being able to heal people is always a bonus. Not sure about Apollo himself, though, man's kinda full of himself. Then again, so are most of the gods, so... eh.
I've always been in awe of Riordan's ability to come up with great chapter titles. I can barely decide on a title for my whole book. Coming up with clever chapter titles too is beyond me!
Well if we're talking about who's offspring we like to be i'd say Aphrodite. Not because i am very pretty (conventionally i am definitely not) but because beauty and love is so much more than just superficial appearances. A character in a later bookseries, piper , is a great role model to me :D
@@reveriemephisto1995 I'm more likely to go into a food coma, because ironically I 'm scared of drinking alcohol, or at least I'm scared of getting drunk, I've seen and read a lot of unpleasant drunk stories and I'm like "not worth it" That being said, I can see my real life brother getting claimed by Dionysus just by getting drunk, he's more of a Dionysus child than me... he's even dyslexic...oh my gods...
I don't know who my dad/mum would be. Being the god of theater, I was going to say Dionysus, I can see him in another lifetime falling for either my mum or my aunt, but the more I thought about, the more I realized he'd choose my aunt. She's more of a theater veteran than my mum, and my aunt has always had a godlike singing voice, so yeah she'd definitely catch the attention of Apollo, before my mum.
Id want to be the child of Apollo for the archery and sun powers. But Artemis is my favorite goddess. But shes a virgin goddess, so that cant happen lol
Hera queen of the gods I would hope it's her because her personality sounds like my own mother empowered a true feminist and someone who cares about her family
Hera has no semi-divine children tho; being the goddess of marriage, it's not in her nature to be unfaithful. Of the 3 main pantheons, only frigg has mortal children out of wedlock tho she's also a goddess-queen like hera

I loved the idea of having Eris as a mother as ive been described as being quite chaotic. But if we have to stick with the typical 12 athena or hades would be interesting
6:44 I did a lot of quizzes and my “dad” is hades
My godly parent would probably be Athena. Mostly because of her dominion over arts and crafts but also often I’ll say stuff and people will be like “wow that’s actually really smart.” Despite it seeming obvious to me.
Of the twenty deities who have cabins at camp Half-blood, only eighteen of which have children, I would be either a child of Apollo or Iris.
6:36 i would want it to be Athena, Artemis or Apollo
I took a quiz and my godly parent is Ares which I really like.
I'd love to be a child of Poseidon if I had to choose, not just because they're among the most powerful, but I love the water. Ever since I was a kid when I played superheroes I would pick water powers, to be able to control it, not to mention the other huge amount of powers Percy has at his disposal that might be spoilers
My parental god would probably be Hephaestus, I love creating things with my hands (and I’m drawn to fire lol)
Being the son of Thanatos would have been interesting. Thanatos Is the god of death, and the one that keeps the souls in the afterlife from going back to the living world
Either Hecate because I love the night, or Artemis for my love of cats.
I don't believe it counts as spoilers, but I believe the episode names are titled similarly to the titles of the book chapters.
my first choice would be Erebus or Nyx (they are Primordials)
but if it had to be one of the gods maybe Ares or Hephaestus
I think my godly parent might be Apollo, because he’s a creative. God of poetry, music, theatre, prophecy, medicine. I’m not sure how good I’d be at archery….
I would want to be a kid of Athene. Fighting with strategy is exactly what i would want to do.
6:43 I think I might have to go with Apollo if I have a geek parent
Hades as my God dad, because in the real myths he's actually one of the only decent gods
More Percy Jackson, let's gooo! Also, how has our lovely lass been doing?
6:31 I did the quiz and got Hades!
I would want my parent to be 1 of the 4 gods of wind or Artemis
I think I'd want Apollo as my godly parent. He's the god of all forms of art, as well as the god of healing, archery, and protector of the young (whatever that means). Graphic art is my whole thing, so that's the main reason, but I also do have a fondness for archery, and being able to heal people is always a bonus. Not sure about Apollo himself, though, man's kinda full of himself. Then again, so are most of the gods, so... eh.
As far as godly parents go, I'd probably want to be a child of Athena or Hephaestus, for the artistic side if nothing else.
if I had a godly parent I would want it to be Hades, ruler of the underworld.
The question on who you would hope for your godly parent, I would hope that my godly parent would either be Athena or Hades
Uh, Mosco, the episode titles were taken straight from the book!
I've always been in awe of Riordan's ability to come up with great chapter titles. I can barely decide on a title for my whole book. Coming up with clever chapter titles too is beyond me!
My father is Apolo
6:31 Probably Zeus ⚡️⚡️⚡️
You mentioned the Avatar series. Do you mean the Netflix live action? Have you seen the original animated series?
Id prefer to be a Hephaestus kid or maybe an Apollo kid but id probably be an Ares
Annabeth in this show gives me Caitlyn from arcane vibes and I have no idea why.
Well if we're talking about who's offspring we like to be i'd say Aphrodite. Not because i am very pretty (conventionally i am definitely not) but because beauty and love is so much more than just superficial appearances.
A character in a later bookseries, piper , is a great role model to me :D
I would definitly be an Hades kid! Ik it sounds strange, but it fits :D
6:42 Scorpio right if a if Aries can exist then so I can Scorpio
I would have loved Apollo or Hades as my dad or Athena or Hecate as my Mom
I would be a daughter of Aphrodite, for sure. My Sun and Moon signs are in Libra and my Star Sign is Venus. It's too obvious! 😅
If we're going with that mindset then my dad would be Pluto/Hades (Both my sun and moon are Scorpio)
@@onyxcrescent9364 And if we base it on only a few personality traits, I'm a gluten who likes to drink. I could be a daughter of Dionysus, then. 🤣
@@reveriemephisto1995 huh... I'm also gluten, but I come from a family of theater veterans from my mum's side...we could be siblings...
@@onyxcrescent9364 I wonder what we would have to do to be claimed by Dionysus. Get flat out drunk and be in a food coma at the same time? 🤣🤣🤣
@@reveriemephisto1995 I'm more likely to go into a food coma, because ironically I 'm scared of drinking alcohol, or at least I'm scared of getting drunk, I've seen and read a lot of unpleasant drunk stories and I'm like "not worth it"
That being said, I can see my real life brother getting claimed by Dionysus just by getting drunk, he's more of a Dionysus child than me... he's even dyslexic...oh my gods...
I’m a daughter of Apollo! ☀️ ☀️ ☀️
I think there's a nymph of theater if memory serves me right.
Aphrodite or Eris. I love love as much as I love chaos 😈
Id want to be the child of Apollo for the archery and sun powers. But Artemis is my favorite goddess. But shes a virgin goddess, so that cant happen lol
And yet one of the main characters is a child of athena...
Hephaestus the god of fire and blacksmithing so I'd be in cabin nine at the camp
Definitely Athena!!!
Is Elijah watching this?? It hilarious.
If I were an offspring of a God or Goddess, it would have to be to someone who isn't evil.
Or, at the very least, one who's the least douchey.
my father would be after quite a lot of debate and thinking with friends, maybe one of the worse dads to have in terms of gods, and not even one of the main 12 greek ones: Eros
If I could choose my godly parent, I'd choose one of the more minor ones. There would be a lot less drama that way.
