    Best video I have seen on how to check valve clearances. My 250x is having a hard start problem, so I know I'm due for an adjustment. I have already ordered a hot cams shim kit, and ready to get to work! Thanks a bunch!

      Can valves that haven't been adjusted in a long time and are potentially out of spec make the bike alittle loud from the valve cover area?
      I like the video and will do this when I can in a week or so. I just picked up an 04 Crf250x. Starts and runs great but its loud from the very very top of the engine and you can almost hear the noise from thru the air filter with the seat off and air box lid mod done..
      Hopefully I don't find some bad news in there but im not that hopeful. Judging by the oil the bike didn't have the nest maintenance.
      However the cylinder looks new and all the gakest do as well like someone just did an engine rebuild..
      And it does run fine and has tons of power and starts up instantly hot or cold with the electric starter..

    Tip for when you make the shim adjustment. Watch the exhaust shims carefully when cam is removed. Oil will make the exhaust shims stick to the rocker then fall out of place. You'll have a not so fun fishing trip after that. Great video

    This is a the best video i've been able to find on how to check the valve clearances on the 250X thanks for putting this together. I will be checking mine this weekend. Looking forward to your next video on how to do the adjustment on the valves, especially if mine need it too!

    Great video. Maintenance videos are a lot of work. Your wife had a plastic bag from Target. They are outlawed in Oregon. You don’t know how much you miss those until you can’t have them.

    Am I understanding this right that the valve springs that we can see are both exhaust valve and both the intake valves are under the cam lobes? I’m currently working on a 250r that’s gotten harder to start to the point where it won’t start now, all it does is backfire and I’m thinking it’s a valve adjustment issue

      That’s correct. It’s a single cam design with the cam directly above the intake valves and a follower that actuates the exhaust valves.

    I have a 2005 CRF 250X and I need to get a new carb or my existing one rebuilt by someone other than me! I've never checked the valves. Maybe after 17 years I should.

    I have one intake valve that’s ok and one with no clearance. I dropped the shim size from 185 to 175 and still no clearance. Exhaust valves required a slight adjustment the same for both. What would cause the one intake valve to be so much higher (sunk)? Leak down test was good. Thanks!

    Can someone give me a hand. I shimmed my valves the other day. I set to top dead center, ziptide timing chain to cams, pulled the tensioner. Shimmed then put journal bolt back in checked gaps then put the tensioner back in my cams weren't at TDC. I check my crankshaft and it was off top dead center so rotated it back and cams were off. Is it possible for the timing to be off if the crankshaft slightly moved if chain was ziptide to cams? Could it be just because my chain is stretched? Thanks

    How hard should you push the feeler gauge in? My valves seem to be way out of spec but that is only if I put all my force into putting the feeler gauge in. Also my valve spring compresses when I put that much force into it.

      There should be some resistance when sliding the gauge but it should not take any force at all, especially not enough to compress the valve spring.

      Your going by feel for slight resistance. Enough to feel some grab but not enough that you have to force it to move

    How come the clearance range you wrote down is different than what the book specified new to learning how to check valve clearance please explain

      The intake clearance is specified at 0.12mm, with a 0.03mm tolerance (plus or minus) indicated. This means that the acceptable range is 0.03mm higher or 0.03mm lower than 0.12mm. So the acceptable range for intake clearance is 0.09mm - 0.15mm.

      Just for a real quick compo John. I had a 250X then brought a WR250. The Honda has a bigger spread of power so it is easier to ride especially when wet. The Yamaha was more peaky but felt like it had more power. Suspension on the Yamaha is better. The SSS forks are brilliant. I found them both to be much the same reliable wise. I sold my Honda to a mate, who loved it, then he sold it to another one of our friends. Not sure of the hours now but must be well over 200.

    Im sur eyou know more about it than i but i have a 2016 crf250r and im having problens with the one intake valve ut was being held open about .02 abd i put new shyms in to it so the clearence was .08 it ran and worked fine in about a week it tightened up again holding it open .01 so i put a different shym naking the clearance .09 obce again in about a week it was being held open again any idea what could be wrong with it dk if its the valve or the valve seat or what please help

      Jaime Reyes I have reused them multiple times. If you’re careful and don’t damage it should be fine. Some people buy new ones each time though.

    I saw you had an hour meter wire off of the coil. Where do you wrap that around at. I didn’t realize that that type of meter worked on those style of coils, I thought they only worked on the traditional spark plug wires.

      Yeah, it works great. The meter I have also has RPM so you can tune idle, etc. I wrapped it around the top between the little rubber boot and the top plastic part so it doesn't interfere and secured it with a zip tie. Thanks for watching!

    I have done this to my bike that wont start, and the intake valves are less than 0.05 mm on both sides. (Thats the thinnest i got) .how do i know what the right size of chim is when i cant measure exact?

      The manual recommends every 600 miles or every 15 hours of operation. I don't check them that often though.
