This story gives me the chills! As a young man I always wanted to go to Germany (being an American), I joined the military, I fell in love with the most beautiful German girl... we married, I embraced the German culture with all of my being. I visited as many holocaust cemeteries I could. I had a deep profound sadness for all of the jews taken and murdered. I remember asking my wife, "what are these square brass plates in front of the houses in Wiesbaden where we lived"... her reply was that is a marker in front of each ouse where a jew was removed and killed... sadness is the only thing I could feel, everytime I walked to the bakery or meat market and walked over (never stepping on a single one).
I remember going to Bergen-Belsen and seeing the information about the diary of Ann Frank, I remember finding the little Russian cemetery way in the back as to be hidden or so it appeared.
As Paul Harvey used to say... and now you know the rest of the story...
As a "Barkman" in the USA, I never knew or ever heard of this... My heart aches as tears well up inside my eyes... all those poor innocent people being persecuted just because of their religion...
I have seen grave sites in several different countries overseas and never once did I think "I wonder if one of my (possible) descendants cause the death of the poor people".
I don't know if this woman is somehow related to us Barkmans in America but my heart goes out to anyone ever hurt during that terrible time.
As the Germans say, "Vorwards und nicht Vorgessen"

At 12:06, the image showing Stutthof overseers (Lead Guards) on trial. The overseer in the 2nd row (middle) was Erna Beilhardt. She was the only one not giggling or to behaving like the trial was a farce. She was also the ONLY one not sentenced to death. She was originally a nurse, but took the training course to be a concentration camp overseer. She only lasted in Stutthof for less than a month...we resigned because of the way prisoners were being treated and there was no proof she ever even harmed a prisoner (let alone kill anyone). She did serve 5 years in prison for being a Nazi in the SS. She passed away in 1999.

What a shocking story of a child conditioned into such savagery and her acceptance of her fate. She probably knew it wasn’t right to treat people like this but because of the war she was obliged to behave without reservation, compassion or kindliness. I pity the children who suffered her wrath and her other victims. I wonder what happened to the child she bore who was being raised by her mother. She was just as much a victim as her objects of hate. This is the cost of totalitarianism.

Shocking indeed. A man who suffered from Downsyndome in his 20s was attacked by dogs, his family were able to see this but could not help due to the soldiers who arranged for medical help. The family were told they could return in a week. When they came back they found his decomposing body, his bone wounds were only covered by bandages and he had bled to death all alone. The irony is the soldiers responsible for this were the IDF, jewish people.

I reject the characterization of these people as victims. The nazis wanted to murder or eliminate certain groups including Jews, gypsies, and gay people. Nowhere in that though was a commandment to beat or torture the victims. If all these women had done was follow orders, I probably would not have supported condemning them to death. The reality though was much different. They did horrible things to the inmates under their care that they were not ordered to do and most took a delight in doing so. People like that maybe young, but they are not victims.

I find your video interesting and informative. The Polish national anthem begins with the words: "Poland has not yet perished while we are alive..." .These are not empty words. This is the creed of the Polish spirit. Most Poles are true patriots, often wrongly portrayed as nationalists. Someone who does not understand the Polish spirit often confuses both expressions. Most Poles love their country and, if necessary, fight for the freedom and independence of their homeland. God, honor and homeland also reflect who Poles really are.

Most of them witnessed much worse atrocities inflicted upon their relatives, friends and neighbours. No, I don't justify bringing kids to shows of this kind (by the way, the authorities clearly said NOT to allow children under 14 to come, but most people didn't give a f**k about what the authorities were saying). I am just trying to point out why looking at this from today's perspective is misleading.

Maybe your next documentary could be on Poland and Germany from 1919 to 1939. The first concentration camps on European soil (for Germans, later Ukranians). The millions of German refugees, the more than 45.000 dead Germans in 1939 alone. Polish "offers" to France in 1934 and 1938 to attack Germany from both sides and split it in a Polish and a French half, and many other niceties. Maybe a film on Polonisation?
