Today's video is a bit different from what I normally make, and I like that! In this video I speak Spanish with Michelle, a fair skinned Mexican. I wanted to hear her experience having been born and raised in the state of Jalisco, Mexico having a different skin complexion than most of the people in her country. Racial topics have been so tense and I wanted to create this video to show everyone that your skin color does not matter, it's the person you are that matters.
Another reason I wanted to make this video is because I constantly receive comments saying things like, "Why are they surprised he speaks perfect Spanish, there are lots of fair skinned Spanish speakers?" I, of course understand this, but I know many people may not. I believe that most times people are shocked by my Spanish not because I have white skin, but because I'm a foreigner who learned the language from scratch in high school. It's adorable. Her vowels are too pure to be a native English speaker. But her English is colloquial, and most people wouldn't notice as much. It's true. Learn, live, love. Doesn't matter the person, the culture, or the language.
Yeah the Spanish vowel system is simplistic to say the least, it lacks the depth and breadth of English vowel sounds.

I've lived in Mexico for years and can verify that the country is very diverse when it comes to skin, hair and eye colors. Many Mexicans look exactly like Americans or Europeans...

@Cadelo Rivelo not necessarily. My grandparents are both brown, dark brown haired, straight haired natives, they gave birth to two white passing children, one of them was blonde and green eyes. “White passing” doesn’t always mean white.
@@indigenousspinster_6665 There is no such thing as "Caucasian passing", You either are Caucasian, mixed, or not Caucasian. Two Native Americans can't produce a child with blonde hair or green eyes because those are uniquely Caucasian features. You may want to look into your family tree or take DNA test because your grandparents are part Caucasian

I’m Venezuelan and I am blond. We latinos are not “brown people” we are “all colors people”, exactly as the US and Canada but with more Mixed Race people in proportion. For those who think all latinos are just “brown” they should go to Dominican Republic where the majority is Black or Argentina where the majority is White. Latino is a culture or ethnicity, not a race.

@Dragon Of The West in fact Indigenous People are the less Latinos in the concept of Latino. Because the word comes from Latin America, Latin meaning that we speak a Latin origin language like Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian or French. An Italian is in fact more Latino than an Aztec or an Inca. In the USA they just changed the concept to Average Mexican looking people, which totally wrong IMHO.

I've chatted with her before on Italki; Michelle is nice. Interesting topic. I think people sometimes confuse "nationality/ethnicity" and "race". They mean different things. Where you are born doesn't have much to do with your genetic makeup. At the end of the day though, none of it really matters. We are all humans.

Yeah bc there are no different human races. That's just a biological fact and My old biology professor almost had a stroke when he heard people talking about Caucasian race etc., because this comes from the Nazi race theory and from the origin of racism, i.e. the racial division.

White Supremacy was then simultaneously furthered and developed in the United States through policies such as the extermination act against Native Americans, slavery and the Anti-Chinese Exclusion act. Hitler and the Nazi party took these theories and applied practices (especially from the U.S) and ran with it as the basis for Nazism.

In Germany for instance there is nothing like a „race“ concept only ethnicity or nationality. Because only uneducated people believe in such concepts, racists in Germany only discriminate people because of their religion or their skin-color.

Years ago, in Saltillo, Coahuila, my waiter at a restaurant was Jose Muller. he was 6'3", blonde, blue eyed, and a descendant of German immigrants to Mexico in the 1880s. His name still had the umlaut over the 'u' but I can't figure out how to type it. Immigrants to Mexico came from many countries in Europe as well as Asia. There were even a large number of Confederates who moved to Mexico after the US Civil War in about 1865.
I've been very interested to learn that Spain itself is a remarkable ethnic mix, at least if you trace its history back hundreds or even thousands of years. To give just one example, the name "Rodriguez" is ultimately from a Gothic (Germanic) language!
Soy estadounidense y tengo muchos parientes en el D.F. Somos judíos. Creo que hay más de 50,000 judíos en el país, y claro está, hay muchos descendientes de españoles y otros europeos que siempre se han casado entre ellos mismos y no tienen el "look" estereotípico mexicano. De hecho en el adn mexicano mestizo hay sangre ....judía, árabe, gitana, española, alemana, italiana de napoles, indígena, africana y gente que vino de Asia en tiempos virreinales, como javaneses, camboyanos, timorenses, Bengala, Ceilán, Macazar, gente de Tidore y de la India etc. Somos la mezcla de todo el mundo.
Incluso hay mexicanos con apariencia morena que puede tener sangre judía y no lo saben ya que en tiempos del imperio español fueron obligados por novohispanos y españoles a cambiar sus apellidos al equivalente al español novohispano y de religión.

En MEXICO y America Latina, es común llamar a las personas con adjetivos, Like Güero, que literal en MEXICO exclusivamente significa “persona blanca”, mi mamá era blanca y todos lo llamaron como “la güerita” y eso nunca fue ofensivo, hay otros como decir “gordo”, flaco, negro, etc!! me imagino que un gran factor es el grupo de edad, pues de las ocasiones que recuerdo, quienes hacen la pregunta son niños... además del estado, podría comentar; no es lo mismo una persona con esas características en Jalisco (como vemos en el video) a alguien en un estado o ciudad donde la mayoría de habitantes sean más morenos...

@@HCMar777 Diversidad en países como USA, Canadá, Europa, Australia, Nueva Zelanda allí si hay diversidad en México con una minoría de blancos, afromestizos, libaneses etc. no se puede hablar de diversidad cuando el 80% o más de la gente es morena en diversos tonos y que la mayoría tienen rasgos comunes, ¿Cuál diversidad?, vivo en la CDMX y solo veo diversidad cuando voy al centro donde llegan los turistas de raza blanca, negra, oriental etc. pero de allí hacía afuera todo se ve igual por ejemplo acabo de ir a Sinaloa y allí si veía los weros que se destacaban entre miles de morenos, en Chihuahua casi no vi blancos solo unos cuantos y también se destacaban de allí en Fuera casi todo México es lo mismo e incluso en Guadalajara es lo mismo que en la CDMX, ya pronto iré a los Altos de Jalisco.

It'd be interesting if you interviewed a latino of African or South East Asian origin who's a native Spanish-speaker. I feel as though the "white latino" kind of archetype has been talked a lot about. Push the envelope a little because I think that would generate quite a bit of conversation.
Depends on the country. In some countries you're going to get some WTF looks. In other Latin America countries there are a ton of black people like in Cuba, DR etc.
Well I think this was more White Mexican than White Latino interview, but I guess he was trying to show that someone White like him can be Mexican and native in Spanish which many people find surprising when he speaks it on Omegle for example.

I was thinking the exact same thing Marcus Hall. You can be a White person born and raised in Mexico with blonde hair and blue eyes or a redhead with green eyes and speak Spanish in Mexico you are just as Mexican as a Brown person in Mexico. Remember the Spanish language originated in Spain, so if it wasn't for the Spaniards from Spain conquering Mexico these same Mexicans wouldn't be speaking the Spanish language but one of the Indigenous languages of Mexico. Wey, soy norteño y hay un monton de gente blanca o rubia. Mi hija es rubia y de ojos verdes, y muchas des sus compañeras igual. Por eso no se siente que sea algo "especial" o "distinta". Simplemente es un tono de piel y un color de cabello y ojos. Lo que si es más común, es ser de piel clara en un estrato alto de la sociedad por obvias razones, pues en general el trabajo no es "sol a sol" .

Toda Latinoamérica es muy diversa, de hecho fuimos de las primeras regiones en el mundo donde la mezcla racial de más de 3 razas era la norma y hoy en día todos tenemos un poco de Indigena y español mezclado con cualquier otra "raza" y en diversos niveles. Lo único es que en el imperio español la población era importante ya los españoles no se daban abasto en tan grande continente. Entonces las capitales se fundaron en las poblaciones indígenas más densas por eso las ciudades más importantes eran lugares como, México, Guatemala, Manila, Quito, Lima etc... Donde la población tiene un mayor componente indígena en sus genes y por lo cual al ser después de la independencia, las regiones más prosperas ya que heredaron los impuestos recolectados, además de los centros de mando político, ellos se convirtieron en la primera cara de LATAM. Aunque los lugares menos densamente poblados eran mayoritariamente europeos o completamente indígenas por lo que el meztisage fue más rápido y con una mayor predominancia para los europeos como es el caso de Argentina, Costa Rica, Sinaloa etc.. Entonces hoy en dia con la migracion a las ciudades y nuevas olas migratoras post independencia nuestras poblaciones son extremadamente mezcladas y diversas. Pero yo diré que a pesar de esto como Latinoamericano blanco es molesto que aveces se le considera a uno "foraneo" cuando parte de tus ancestros fueron "nativos americanos" igual que los demás pero solo por tu apariencia ya te dicen que no perteneces al lugar donde eres ¬.¬

It's the funniest thing. We Mexicans associate everyone with their race or point of origin. We mean no harm at all. In fact, we love different races and cultures. My best friend is Polish and my wife is Irish. We love people.

Que bueno que aprendas otro idioma, te felicito pero sigues siendo el típico estadounidense que cree que los mexicanos son bajitos, morenos y con bigote, y que si eres latino tu piel debe ser morena, con rasgos indígena, que la única gente blanca está en Norteamérica. Tu cabeza de estadounidense no puede comprender que ser latino no define tu color de piel, ni tu estatus social, y que ser latino significa pertenecer a una mezcla interminable de razas, colores, credos, costumbres y dialectos. Hablas de ser un güero mexicano como si fuese una especie rara en peligro de extinción o algún tipo de personaje exótico. De verdad creen que son los únicos blancos y rubios del continente?

I had an encounter with white mexicans once in torreon. They were convinced I was from some place called Leon. I told them in spanish that I am Texan and I do not speak any spanish. They started talking about the state Jalisco then I heard Galveston. Then they poured hot coffee on my hand. I cussed them out royally.

I am Mexican, I am a meztiso and I am caucasian white, I am not blond, but I have very white skin, normally the base color of Mexicans is pinkish white in the dark, in Mexico it is said 'prieto' to those who meet those characteristics, in the north of the country it is more common to see white people, or so I think.
Actually i am very white feom Monterrey and there is a lot of Mexicans withblue and green eyes because of our Spanish Ancestors and also because of the french immigration and irish american that arrive to Mexico when they side with the Mexican Army in the Texas War with Mexico and also the State of Chihuahua has a lot of Germans and also their is the afro Mexicans in Oaxaca Veracruz and Guerrero

Capaz preguntemos si es de otro país si es que tiene un acento raro al hablar (tipo extranjero) o si habla otro idioma. También podría ser por la vestimenta.. Ahí uno ya se da cuenta q es extranjero.
En mi propia ciudad en algun lugar de Chihuahua me preguntaron si soy peruana o sudamericana. Solo porque no uso tantas frases coloquiales. ni tengo el acento tan fuerte. Por la forma de hablar la gente si te pregunta.

Latin America has people off all races, they are home to the largest diaspora groups of people of Japanese descent, German descent, Lebanese descent, Italian descent etc
I think its interesting. Like a black man with a perfect Londoner accent, or an oriental woman with a German accent, or even a Swede (Nordic white) with a Sudanese accent. These are not typical, or what we are accustomed to. It's not *wrong*...but it is interesting.
In Mexico, Mexican whites are very common and have been in the country for 500 years, blacks in London have about 20 years in your city, others in Mexico, there are cities with more whites like Culiacan, your comparison is ridiculous.

Pues obviamente en un país con mucha gente como México habrá regiones donde casi no hay blancos y obviamente habrá otras donde mucha de su población sea blanca. Soy, crecí y vivo en un lugar donde casi la mitad de mis amigos, familiares, vecinos y conocidos son blancos, incluso de ojos de colores, pelirrojos y hasta de cabello rubio que sus familias tienen más de 200 años en el país y en ningún momento se les ha cuestionado su nacionalidad por sus rasgos físicos. No fue hasta que encontré en internet esta clase de videos donde literalmente hacen ver que es imposible creer que un mexicano pueda tener ciertos rasgos físicos sólo por ser mexicano. Internet me abrió los ojos al mostrarme tanta ignorancia en los demás.
There are white Mexicans all over Mexico, not just Jalisco. And honestly, the only people that get surprised when they see a light skinned Latino are Americans. This doesn't happen in other countries.

Those stereotypes about latin America seem to be common in the USA. It seems as if North Americans do not realize that Spanish is a European country and culture. Latin culture related to southern European cultures, those who speak Romance languages. Bit it seems that Many Americans assume that people from latin America are a sort of distinct « race » and distinct civilisation from the « west ». Of course there have been lots of race mixings in many latin American countries, but people of European descent still are common everywhere in Latin America, but especially in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile or Brazil. Central America being more indigenous-descend, but still many central Americans are majoritary european descent too.
I’m Mexican but my skin color doesn’t say other wise since I’m white. Mexican can be white, tan and black and I find it pretty cool that Mexico is a race for all colors, not one.

My dads from Guadalajara and according to 23andme he’s about 60% European. A majority of Mexicans are mixed and come in all shades. & a minority are full European or full indigenous. Mostly ignorant Americans think Mexicans have to have a certain “look” to be Mexican

People don’t actually realize how common it is to find a white latino in places like Argentina or Uruguay, personally I’m from Argentina and my family comes from France, Italy and Spain, being myself blonde and pale.

In my country on the other side of the world, Uruguay is never mentioned in the news and we know nothing about it. I honestly didn't know there were any white people at all there.

I know it's bad and we should be studying about the whole world, but that's how things are at the moment. So almost no one in my country would know Uruguay's border is next to Argentina, nor the ethnic composition of Uruguay, unless they have a passion for geography or travelling.

Los mexicanos somos una mezcla de razas, pocas razas en nuestro país son puras (si acaso los grupos indígenas) muchos de los que parecen blancos tienen familiares que no lo son. En una misma familia, puedes encontrar miembros que parecen euroopeos, otros mestizos etc. Por ejemplo, la cantante Yuri que es rubia tiene una hermana morena. Edith Gonzales, rubia también tiene un hermano que parece asiático etc.
Can someone clarify/ teach me something? I'm white and my husband is 100% Mexican from michocan, Mexico. So my thinking is our kids are literally half and half . His family does not consider our kids Hispanic nor do anyone we know including my son's school. His teacher won't even tell my son for example " hey your dad is here to pick you up" she says hey angel some guy is here to pick you up . Is it just not accepted if skin color is more lighter? The thing is Mexican is not a race, if your husband is more light complexed he has more Spanish DNA and when those types of Mexicans marry pure white people they usually make white children since the children are like 80%+ white DNA, now if it's a dark dark Mexican your children will look more like Selena Gomez.

Lo único que molesta es que, en las redes sociales y en la tele, la mayoría de gente famosa aquí tiende a tener la piel de tez clara (no es necesariamente claro si son de descendencia europea) dado que lamentablemente se prefiere esa apariencia.
Osea que, aunque la mayoría de las personas en el país son diferentes con un rango variado de piel, cabello, etc., solo se muestra una pequeña parte de la población en novelas, youtubers, etc.
Btw, nothing wrong with being/ appearing white in it of itself but rather how media companies consumed by most of the population (which is economically lower class) don't even allow them to get to see themselves on TV unless it's on rolls of housekeepers which is a travesty. It has gotten better though as there have been more mediums available for consumption of entertainment and demands from a younger demographic

Latin-America is not too different than the United States. People expect all Mexicans to be brown indigineous looking, but like the US, Mexico also had other settlers in the past such as the Irish, Italians, Germans, French, ect.... Besides that, there is many Chinese Mexicans too

México es un país de Mestizos algunos salimos más claros otros morenos pasa en una misma familia, y si una minoría son blancos decendientes directos de europeos pero eso no significa que por ser blancos no son Mexicanos, ser Mexicano es una Nacionalidad no una raza, hay razas como la amarilla que predomina en Asía y la raza negra que todos provienen de África, pero no se puede decir que un Mexicano tiene que ser de ciertas características como si se tratara de una raza especifica, cualquiera que nace en este país es Mexicano por nacimiento y eso pasó con nuestros abuelos, bisabuelos, etc
