@Stripey Arse Yeah, I actually liked Enterprise, but both the show and it's characters had some major flaws. And I don't mean in an interesting character building way. To be honest TOS seems to have been the only series that acknowledged the 'Prime Directive' while at the same time showing that it wasn't, nor shouldn't be, an absolute shackle on the actions of the members of Starfleet. TNG and all the shows after just threw that out the window and poo pooed it, which made it weirder when their characters did the same thing but still acted smug and morally superior.

Minor correction: the Nova has three torpedo launchers, 2 fore (easily seen on about every render we know) and 1 aft (kinda hidden above the shuttlebay). Would love your opinion.

    • @davidcolby167
      @davidcolby167 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@paulscott2037 I've read but not played it, so here's what I've got so far.
The base mechanic is 2d20, rolled against a Stat+Skill combo. The stats and skills are laser focused on being Starfleet officers - in that the skills are Conn, Security, Science, Medical and Command (literally, the divisions of Starfleet.) So, you might roll Control+Tactical to fire a phaser pistol, or Daring+Command to give a stirring speech.
If you have a focus that applies and you roll under your skill, you get 2 successes. Otherwise, you get one. So, I have Control of 9, Security 4, and the focus on Phasers. I fire my phaser pistol at a klingon and get 16 and a 9 on my d20. That means I get 1 successes. If I had gotten a 4 instead of a 9, that'd have been 2 successes.
One thing I do like is that your base damage is based off your Security skill. So, someone with Sec 4 rolls 4 more dice with phasers and fisticuffs. That was a nice touch.
The other major mechanic is the idea of Momentum and Threat. You gain Momentum by rolling well or by giving the GM Threat. Momentum can be spent to add bonus dice or give yourself bonus actions. The GM can use threat to spawn new enemies (for example, having some extra Romulans beam into a fight.)
GMs can also gain threat if the PCs "escalate" things - I.E, bringing out photon torpedoes, equipping phaser rifles, that kind of thing.
In terms of fluff, the game is CLEARLY written by insanely nerdy weirdoes and I love it! They made everything canon. *Everything.* They stitched together Enterprise and made it actually sound like a good TV show! They worked in the *animated series* in there! They have callbacks to the Donut of Time and let you poke around inside of TOS era episodes in the TNG era (like, Starfleet is apparently STILL studying the Doomsday Device from TOS!) That's all quite cool!
Now, on to the kinda shitty part of the game: The leveling system.
I sure hope that you like being...basically unchanged for pretty much the entire game. Advancement is VERY incremental. Like, if you've played Rifts, it's basically on par with that. Over many sessions, you may get +1 to a stat or +1 to a skill, maybe a neat feat-like ability.
Also, I sure hope you like ONLY being Starfleet characters! Because the game is basically completely unequipped to run almost anything else. You're either the pajama hero brigade or having to kitbash a lot of content together.
      So, overall, it's...ehhh?
Like, get it for the fluff and maybe for the fun of building spaceships. And it does do that ONE SPECIFIC THING of being a Starfleet crew exploring things really well. But if you want a more generic Star Trek exploration universe thing, I'd go for something more broad like Savage Worlds.

I think it would have been better if it had firmer continuity, consequences from prior episodes still visible, but also a steady progress toward longer-term survival. Like letting us see them develop methods for repairing the ship even en route, resupplying, etc. Upgrade the ship as they go, become tougher and tougher over time whenever they're not weakened by combat damage, and even that can always be temporary as they get chances to repair.
That way we can have the best of both worlds: Survival in a hostile environment, but also optimism and a generally more lighthearted tone (with occasional moments of grimness as things go wrong for a while).

That's not exactly what I want, either. I mean yes, lasting consequences are good, but it's too limiting to have the ship suffer increasing amounts of metal fatigue until it just can't go on anymore. That only works when you're steering towards a definitive end of the series in which the ship is intended to be destroyed (or retired in a state unfit for service). If however they have a technology that can fix metal fatigue (either by saying the federation has that tech to begin with, or by showing them acquire or invent it), then that problem is solved - yet they can still have damage from prior episodes because there wasn't an opportunity to repair yet.
There's a lot you can do to control the state of the ship. If you need any specific damage, or a fully repaired ship, just take some time in an earlier episode to have the ship take damage or get repaired.

A LieuTenant (O-3), as OC, would be more likely. The Executive Officer(XO)a LieuTenant, JG (O-2)and, maybe, a First LieuTenant in the rank of Ensign(O-1)is closer to reality. For those who intend to correct this, lieu and tenant are 2 words. The after series books of ST:TNG, there was a Luna Class ship commanded by Captain Riker. It had a crew of 1,000 (or more ) and was in the "Starlog" magazine.

There, now you don't have to slaughter fellow sentient beings just to give your warp drive some nitro. Seriously, the Equinox was qualified above most Federation ships to science the hell out of their problem without committing genocide.

Survey ships ought to be equipped for long range missions. They're scouts, not fighter craft attached to a carrier. Scouts are expected to master the terrain along with their senses and to be able to forage and fight on their own without assistance. You'd think that centuries of Space Travel and learning the hard way that space is basically "disease and death in dark and quiet" would have taught the Federation about that.
