The BUDGET VOYAGER? - Nova-class - Star Trek Starships Explained

  • Exploration Starships are the bread and butter of Starfleet. These versatile ships can range from the nimble Jam Sandwich of the Intrepid class right up to the mighty Six-course Feast of a Galaxy class that is the USS Enterprise-D. However, some of these ships are rather costly to build in terms of resources. So, what if Starfleet and the Federation wanted a new starship to explore the galaxy but were a bit more cost-efficient at the same time, a Butterfinger, if you will? Well, this is where the Nova class comes into the equation, and the Food jokes stop because now I’ve made myself hungry, and it’s your fault.

      That's why I think the Nova class would be good for training cadets by giving them 1st hand Starship experience, kinda like an on hands portion to the Academy books training they get at Starfleet academy, where they would be led by senior officers, and train at different positions on board, and perform mostly planetary survey, cargo runs, and studying stellar phenomenon. The Nova Class is the right size for such a crew.

    In STO I tend towards the science vessels, and I admit I always liked the Nova Class. It's not my favorite, by any means, but I always found it's tight compact design to feel very much worthwhile in universe as a more utilitarian style ship, compared to the 'hero' ships we usually see. But then, I freely Admit I'm a fan of the Miranda/Reliant class starships too, so those compact workhorses are totally my thing.

    The Nova class is a favorite of mine. Appeals to my engineer education. Getting more out of a smaller ship is always more impressive than getting more out of a larger ship because compromises need to be made.
    The antithesis of this is the Intrepid class of ships. They are basically pocket battleships which are faster than destroyers. No compromise was made, so it’s unrealistic. Nova class shows a much more grounded, thoughtful, balanced, and realistic design.
    Other than not carrying as many civilians, the Intrepid class is in every way superior to the Galaxy class.
    Intrepid class ships are smaller, faster, more maneuverable, can land in planets, have more advanced sensors and computers, and have more and better weapons and shields.

    • @Z1gguratVert1go
      @Z1gguratVert1go 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think the Intrepid is OP compared to contemporary Federation ships, but because most of the Delta Quadrant is less advanced Voyager had a tech advantage. A Galaxy could stomp an Intrepid, her only chance would be to run away because faster. A Sovereign could stomp an Intrepid even faster, and is faster as well, as they are contemporaries with the same tech advantages but the Sovereign is bigger with a bigger warp core. A Defiant could stomp an Intrepid, but I'm betting the Intrepid could escape because faster at high warp and likely capable of keeping a high warp speed longer.
      The Nova is the Oberth's replacement as many have said, and isn't designed to stomp anybody, and is also slower than dirt. But her job is to go to a place, hang out and do research for a while, then come back. Short-term missions (less than a year), not long-term missions. According to the Voyager's writer's bible, Intrepid Class ships were meant to operate without resupply for 3 years at a time, so 3 years of antimatter, deuterium, and replicator stocks. I'd guess the Nova carried consumables for a year or so.
      I think the Intrepid is the sweet-spot of bang for buck in its era. I would expect Starfleet to build lots of them, since they can do much with a modest crew and I think that personnel is Starfleet's tightest resource. It's definitely the "cheapest" ship we've seen that can go as fast it can so I'm betting Admirals would love to use them as their personal ships for running around the Federation and taking care of business.

      The Galaxy class saucer section CAN land on a planet. However, taking off again is not likely. If you've read the Star Trek book "Rogue Saucer", they test a prototype Galaxy class saucer section that's upgraded to be able to better land on planets. The Galaxy class does have some advantages over the Intrepid class. Being able to transport large amounts of cargo and passengers is useful for humanitarian aid missions. An Intrepid class would have to make many more trips compared to a Galaxy class. Not to mention a Galaxy class likely has much better endurance for long missions.

Some of the shuttles in the main shuttle bays will have antimatter for their warp drives. If anything the Rhode Island class is the Capital Ship Version of the Nova. Starfleet was so impressed by its performance that they commissioned a beefed up version to replace the Nebula Class being phased out with the Galaxy Class. This way Harry gets a proper ship to command.

    I think the Nova-class was intended to be akin to be Starfleet equivalent to a littoral ship. It ain't meant to be a long range ship like the Intrepid-class but the design is so flexible Starfleet could make a variant that's slightly bigger, heavily armed for its size, and have it specifically made for intelligence gathering and long range operations where a regular Nova-class ship couldn't operate. It's really a sound design and a worthy replacement of the old war canoe.

    • @montithered4741
      @montithered4741 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Fantastic points all around; especially the more specialized variants. When ships are huge, multipurpose, master of all, they get expensive and resource intensive. Takes a lot of time, money, and manpower to get a Galaxy going and maintained.
      The smaller, simpler ships like Nova can be built much faster so each ship has more potential for specialization.

    • @jaymikevillanueva1212
      @jaymikevillanueva1212 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@montithered4741 And the best part is, potential enemies and spies can't tell which Nova class vessel they're looking for given there's so many of them. This is a perfect vessel for Starfleet Intelligence if there's a variant specifically made for them and would utilize more stealth technologies (more advanced than most Starfleet ships but vastly inferior to any ship belonging to Section 31). If Starfleet has a border patrol service, even a larger and heavily armed Nova equipped with a modern set up of the intended design as a gunboat is a good deterrent, especially if you have it set up with either a pair of Sabre-class or Steamrunner-class escorts.
      Hell, pair with 3 or 4 Defiants and what you have is an attack squadron of gunboats used to harass larger ships OR three heavy Novas with an Akira to serve as sledgehammers to punch through large enemy formations. I think it's logical you can have regular Novas serve as science and surveyor ships while having larger specialized Novas fulfill the intended purpose of the Defiant Pathfinder: a lean, mean, and compact torpedo boat.

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The Nova class is _what it needed to be_ for those Equinox episodes, but it is not consistent in its design brief - it should have a *Holodeck* and be *fast.*
    [Warning Essay]
    [*TL:DR* A science ship _needs a Holodeck_ to conduct simulations and it's just _so damn useful in research,_ not just recreation.
    And a small ship by itself exploring scientific phenomenon would find being able to _run away from trouble_ useful - besides also getting to examine a just discovered event (by a non science ship) fast, before it passes. Also it's supposed to also be a AWACS craft in a general war, detecting enemy ships. Speed would be useful then for strategic and tactical proposes.]
    The Equinox needed to have no Holodeck for plot reasons, because that is a luxury that would keep the crew psychologically healthy. But a Holodeck is a *necessity for a science vessel.* Pretty well every scientific mystery episode featured analysis on the Holodeck, its the single most important analytical tool Starfleet ships have. And since it can work just like real equipment, it can be used as spare laboratories. Spare bespoke specialist laboratories that weren't included in the dozen or so labs that your ship already has (although standard labs are good enough to do illegal experiments on using sentients as nitro). And it can create artificial environments, simulations of phenomenon and provide AI experts (like Cardassian doctors and other experts, such as the ships designer, and hold on, you already have holosystems installed - the EMH!) and training from simulations of the best teachers and scientist, and…
    The list goes on, it's just to useful not to include, except for plot purposes.
    But they could have just stated that the Holodeck had been destroyed on the Equinox. Except that Voyager gets half it's interior reconfigured into Holodecks by Hirogen or three decks blown away and its back to normal next week - although maybe the Intrepid class has an experimental manufacturing facility that besides making shuttles and photon torpedoes could completely rebuild the ship in flight. A industrial replicator built on top of a transporter [and why don't small Federation ships have a combo holodeck/replicator/transporter built into one room to save space, they use the same technological principles? and it would make the Holodeck becoming sentient even more fun…].
    Although the official explanation is that Voyager is constructed of *Weeklonium,* that _resets to its default condition_ every week.
    One solution would have been to show the Equinox with part of the ship missing, say a corner of the saucer section, the Holodeck was there, and the main replicators are trashed as well so it can't be rebuilt.
    But seriously, you could make a science vessel half holodeck with labs created on the fly, as long as it had a power surplus, and it would be a viable design.
    Another main plot point of the Equinox was it was slow, so getting back home was even harder (as was avoiding combat by running away, something a non combat vessel, with eleven phasers(?), off by itself examining uninhabited planets away from immediate support in a big nasty galaxy should do), till it was modified to run on dolphin blood (a suggestion put forward by GENERATION TECH).
    But in the backstory of the Nova class it says that the original hull design was from the Defiant pathfinder when they were thinking of a *high warp torpedo attack boat,* instead of the close range maneuverable slugger they went with. It was capable of warp 9.982 (really, really fast) and was designed to do hit and run strikes. It states that the warp core was downgraded to increase service intervals, which is huh? If it's for long term missions then why no Holodecks? And if it's short range missions then service intervals are not a issue. Surely you just don't thrash it at full power to keep it running sweet. A nice big warp core that doesn't have to go above 50% power in normal use would run smoothly for years, a small warp core that you have to rev to get anywhere burns out quicker - it's running a warp core near 100%+ that requires intensive maintenance.
    It does make strategic sense to have a fast science vessel, it can get to _time sensitive_ phenomenon quickly, it can run away from trouble if it encounters hostiles by itself instead of tying up other ships in rescuing or more likely avenging it. And it can waste less time in transit from one site to another.
    And the big, big issue is it's listed as a dual purpose ship (triple, it's a explorer). It's also a *scout ship,* for use in general war (eleven phaser arrays and three torpedo launchers…). It has the best sensor array of any Starfleet vessel so it's job was to travel ahead of the fleet and scan for enemies, as well as go by itself on recon missions. But it can't do that if it's so slow it holds the fleet up and can't stay out of range when it detects enemy ships or even get to the designated search zone in a reasonable timeframe.
    Quite simply this is not compatible with its three cylinder engine from a city car. It should have a big V6 at least or even a V8 and use cylinder deactivation when it's just puttering around on its daily commute, but be able to burn rubber when it's scouting for tanks in a hot zone.
    The ship has contradictions in its concept. This inconsistencies could have been all solved if it had been stated that it originally had these features (Holodeck and high warp) but they, and the ability to repair them, had been destroyed when the captain decided to challenge an _entire alien armada_ with the authority of the Federation, which was approximately 70 plus years away travel time, in order to save a few weeks on that same journey.
    Or maybe the Holodeck was to be installed on Tuesday?
    Still one major improvement was that in instead of being constructed of *Explodium* like the Oberth, it's now built out of *Unrepairium.*

      Galaxy class ships are meant to be majestic and huge. They're entirely self sufficient for extended periods of time without support. There also aren't that many of them. Another reason that I prefer smaller vessels. One can have an entire fleet performing multiple missions for the resources that one Galaxy class takes.
      But I agree that for extended, long term missions larger ships are better. Besides being able to carry more cargo, fuel and supplies, the sheer size of them makes them better able to absorb damage and give more space for the crew to wander around. Better for their psychological needs.

My character graduated from Starfleet Academy, top of her class and instead of entering service at the rank of Ensign, my character entered into service at the rank of Lt. JG, where she served aboard the USS Khitomer, a Nova class ship and an engineer. Eventually the chief engineer retired and my character replaced him as chief engineer for the USS Khitomer. Unfortunately the USS Khitomer was lost in combat and my character was reassigned to the USS Mystic, another Nova class ship where the was the Chief Engineer for sometime before finally being promoted to XO and finally captain. My character has since been reassigned to command the USS Gallman an Intrepid class ship who's patrol zone is near Cait. Interesting bit of side information, the USS Gallman is mainly a ship full of Caitians, my character, the ship's captain is the only human on the ship. The reason for the Caitians being the main crew on the Gallman is because of our patrol zone, it makes it more convenient for the crew to visit their families whenever we have to dock for repairs, resupplies, and/or upgrades.

    • @Tylerpierre99
      @Tylerpierre99 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tbh I'm surprised the element of 'mission pods' isnt more of a thing with smaller Starfleet vessels or science vessels, much like the Danube Class.
      Building a ship that can be adapted for multiple uses just seems more utilitarian and in keeping with the overall Starfleet ethos, whilst also being a full realised method of starship cintriscrion that echos current day space-craft design.
      I realise the in-universe Starfleet isn't constrained by financial restrictions, but from a ergonomic standpoint, and because Starfleet builds ships for the Federation (civilian branch), the adaptability of a starship would also link into the fact that multiple species are members of the Federation, so civilian or scientific vessels could be quickly adapted for different species, as well as different roles, from science labs in mission pods, cargo container pods, loving quarter pods, rescue ships having additional shuttle hanger pods and so on.

    I really find that starships being able to land is horribly risky and pretty stupid. If their antimatter containment fails in space, it's really bad. And that's just radiation and bits of starships shrapnel coming at you at horrifying speeds. If a starship's antimatter containment fails on the ground in an atmosphere, that's media through which to convey a lot of heat and a nasty shockwave. It could be an extinction-level event.
    Also in space, you can eject the warp core and the antimatter pods if you see the containment failure coming before it happens. On the ground? Forget it, ejecting those things either won't work because the ground is too close (the warp core is longer than the clearance under the starship's landing gear) or just as bad (the antimatter pods shoot out of the ship's ventral side, slamming into the ground that's just a couple meters away and blowing up anyway).
    Plus if your ship can't land, it doesn't need landing gear. That's tons and tons of heavy metal equipment you don't need to be dragging all over the galaxy with you everywhere you go.
    Also while on the ground, the starship would need to expend power to its structural integrity fields or the weight of the nacelles would cause them to be torn off the ship. These big machines are designed to float in weightlessness!

    • @Z1gguratVert1go
      @Z1gguratVert1go 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm betting yes, since they were from another universe and relative distances in our universe don't really matter to them. I'd bet they were locking onto the individuals the Equinox had kidnapped so as to find where in our universe to pop into. Like maybe they needed a homing beacon or something. I think that if getting away from where they traditionally were entering our universe far enough was possible to evade them, the Equinox would have managed that by the time they met Voyager. They covered a huge distance by then.

    2 shuttle bays is not a big deal. when you consider its what they CALL a shuttle bay. the "main" shuttle bay, could hold 1 shuttle on the deck and BEARLY store 2 shuttle under the deck in a maintance area. as long as they weren't to long.
    The 2nd shuttle bay... was a lie. its actually the main cargo bay... with its doors opening to allow shuttles to land there. This could hold several shuttles BUT there wasn't a maintenance facility and any shuttle held there... was at the expense of cargo space. so if it was carrying a lot of cargo, say to set up a research base... then it couldn't carry any shuttles there.
