    Based on the DNR app, there were a shade over 155,000 bucks registered as killed during the 2023 season. 35,000 second bucks account for 22% of the total reported buck harvest. If those bucks were spread evenly over every county, that would equate to 421 bucks surving each year per county. In my county, that would be 1 more buck per 800 acres. I, for one, would certainly be in favor of one more buck that makes it another year per 800 acres. To dismiss that makes Mr. Stewart seem a bit dismissive. I'm not even sure if I agree with one buck or staying with two, but to simply throw out 22% of the reporteeld buck harvest as insignificant makes me raise an eyebrow.

      I being a Hoosier resident. Have to say the 1 buck rule was controversial for about 2 yrs after it passed. We now have the #1 typical in America and #1 non typical taken by hunters

    • @Tonkatank04
      @Tonkatank04 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      800 acres is 10-80 acre plots. An individual would be damn lucky to have 40 acres to hunt a year to themselves. So you're giving effectively every hunter at a MAX about 1/20 possibility at that SINGLE deer. The DNR has failed the objective.
      It's absolutely insane the clear cutting, and mismanagement of the Michigan deer herd. DNR needs investigated. Complete mismanagement of wild game and land. They let the military do whatever they want where I live. They've clear cut thousands of acres near me and they don't replant or put in place enough initiatives to recoup the grouse, pheasant and woodcock population. Duck hunting has sucked! What does the DNR do again, successfully? The tax payers are pissed.
      What's with the coyote season changes? Why are you allowing coyotes to recoup and decimate the small game population and deer population? DNR needs to be investigated.

      Over a number of years, the exponential growth of mature bucks would be something great. One year isn't going to change much at all.

    The people that want big bucks, fine make them purchase a more expensive trophy tag. Those who are willing to shoot does or 7 points or less can purchase a cheaper tag. If you shoot a bigger buck or a "Trophy" by mistake you would be fined and lose you hunting privilege for next year.

    So straight from the horses mouth 1 BUCK and APR WILL NOT CHANGE anything!!! Management is a micro thing help manage the county block with your neighbors. The NRC stated that 30 k deer that would survive by going 1 buck a year. In 5 years we would have more deer the all of Indiana. I will invite you guys to come to your corner of Jackson county for a drive. Bring your cameras you will see more 4&5 year old bucks in one drive then most have in 5 years. This is all with the regulations we currently have. If the DNR wants to manage by 3 county blocks it could have effect that would change something. But they showed with the CWD rules they don’t understand when they change rules it doesn’t go back. We can’t take the L and learn from it the rules stay in place like second gun season. I mean muzzleloader… I mean shoot whatever you want now season.

    Michigan absolutely has big bucks. My buddy puts his trail cams out on public land every year and some of the pictures that he sends me are ridiculous. They are difficult to hunt and for the most part become nocturnal during the hunting season once the pressure has been applied.

    Chad… you say only 30,000 2nd bucks are killed in Michigan and changing to a 1 buck state more than likely won’t do anything to age class but you avoid the fact that if we went to a 1 buck state there will be a lot more hunters being VERY PICKY with what they shoot. Most people use the second buck tag to hold out on a big buck that they never see most of the time🤷🏻‍♂️ I will hold a grudge on this state for a long time and I will continue hunting Ohio where it’s night and day compared to Michigan.

    Born and raised is mid michigan. We def can grow some big bucks, however there are still so many hunters that shoot anything that moves. If that makes them happy that is fine. But i would love to see the price of doe tags drop. Heck even going to 1 buck a year on odd years, then 2 bucks a year on even years would be ok. Ive been fortunate enough to harvest a handful of bucks over 130” so it’s possible. Explaining to my boys that this is the last year to harvest a buck in youth season sucks though. I was never a fan of the youth season going until the kids are 16yrs old. I feel if they have to pass Hunter safety then they can hunt with everybody else. So youth season until 12yrs old would be awesome.

    Michigan needs to go to a one buck state and four points on one side if we want to see big mature bucks yes there are big mature bucks in Michigan, but there’s not a lot and they’re all on private land. They’re not getting pushed around on state land, I don’t wanna hear all that. Yes there are big bucks but if you want more big bucks.Thats the only way

    I think most people would be a lot more selective if they only had one buck tag. Guys know that they can shoot a small buck, like a spike, and they still have that other buck tag in their pocket. If they only have one buck tag, people will hold off for a bigger, more mature buck knowing that if they shoot that spike or fork horn, they are done shooting bucks for the year. I also think having one buck tag will help increase the antlerless harvest in the state.

  • @robertlivingston1634
    @robertlivingston1634 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Antler point restrictions have over the decades done by far more harm than good and I'm guilty of taking advantage of it in the past and thought it was a good idea, but when you look deeper we've removed the 1 1/2 year old bucks with 3 or more points on one side for more than 20 years and have left spikes to do the breeding and yes some of those spikes can turn into nice bucks but not all of them, I've noticed over the years that brow tines are getting shorter to non existent. In the 80s 120 inch bucks were pretty common at 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 a couple years ago I shot a 5 1/2 105 inch buck not to impressive for the age, one buck any buck would do more to improve the quality of the bucks on the landscape because those looking for bigger bucks will pass some up which will allow them to get to the older age class and some of the younger bucks may be taken that allows for bigger bucks to make it another year. Typically everything people try to influence goes to shit, way to many people with different opinions and abilities to regulate, quit watching videos of managed properties and expect it can be done on a State level.

      1 buck tag with 3,5 age limit for adults and 1 buck for kids. Any age buck. Without going something like that. Wasting our time. I know hunters that hunted there hole lives. Still shooting the biggest 2,5 year olds. Year after year. Pisses me off.

  • @rfgonzo
    @rfgonzo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Michigan will never be a trophy state, however if your a good hunter you should have no problem tagging out every year on a big Buck in Michigan. Private or State land.

  • @chrismarfia9917
    @chrismarfia9917 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Chad and the DNR have failed Michigan hunters. This state consistently under performs compared to our neighboring states.
    ALL they ever say is "not APRs or 1 buck...", but NEVER have a solution. Newsflash...this problem won't correct itself in a year or 2. It will need 3 or more years to achieve full benefit.
    1 buck and cheap doe tags(depending on DMU census) starts things in the right direction.
    I wish the interviewers weren't so delicate with Chad. Discuss the facts and demand people answer questions (professionally), that's their job as a public worker.

    I love how the experts come on here and they talk like their experts just using data coming from harvest with not actually being in the woods. Is one of the biggest jokes I've ever seen in my entire life. We have a great population of deer and some very very impressive bucks. One thing that we need are the restrictions. Lottery system come on man trying to take away Michigan as a state and what we hunt for. But then again you're a biologist I'm just a guy that spends enough time in the woods to actually see these impressive animals. And her voice is to be heard honestly it's all about the insurance companies right now and wanting to take away all of the animals because vehicles cost way too much for them to keep spending money on. This whole thing is a joke. Spend some time in the woods sometimes you have to go to the deepest darkest places to find the best animals and yes I've seen plenty of the 150s 180s and potentially 200s in the great state of Michigan. Get out from behind your desk

    I wouldn’t point a apr for every buck because people want to manage their land and have good genes getting passed down and if it was a 8 point restriction then you could have a 6 point u want off you land that you can’t shoot so that’s why in my opinion I wouldn’t do apr

  • @bradleyjohnson9569
    @bradleyjohnson9569 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    All the APR does is discourage the youth hunters from enjoying the outdoors. To tell your kids they can’t shoot their first buck because it only has 4 points is ridiculous. You are taking the thrill of the hunt away from our future hunters. Not to mention the fact that most people hunt primarily for the meat. Besides, no one has the right to tell another what a Trophy is to that individual. The thrill of the hunt! That few seconds of adrenaline rush is what makes the hunt, the memories. Let’s not forget that.

    • @jeffpangborn4943

      There is already a carveout exempting youth hunters and apprentice license holders from following APRs. They do not apply to them. Please read the regs.

    You guys are great. Big bucks come from age or drugs haha. But either figure out how to get 600,000 hunters to pass bucks until 4-1/2 years old, or you gotta keep us out of the woods with a draw where only a small amount of us get buck tags each year. Or hunt so so so hard for 4-1/2yr olds that are nearly impossible to kill unless on highly managed property. Iowa is incredible but the pressure in Iowa is much less than Michigan. Iowa starts gun season 12/5ish keeping guns outta woods when ruts hot. Only way to make Michigan an Iowa would be very unpopular. I’m certain there are a few HIGHLY MANAGED private lands in Michigan that’ll rival Iowa.

  • @chrisnoeske8904
    @chrisnoeske8904 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm not even gonna watch this video. You people call yourself hunters no way. Dear hunting is dear hunting. You're out there to harvest a deer, not a deer with 8 or 10 points on top of its head. As far as I'm concerned when that's all you're looking for you are disrespecting the animal. Let everybody hunt the way they want to hunt. When the state.
    Tells me that my buck has to have so many points. I will quit hunting. I will not buy a hunting license in Michigan. You bunch of punks don't know what you're talking about.

    I have over 20 bucks on the wall, all but one is from southern lease land. The rest are high pressure public land in Central & Northern MI. 98% of my bucks all score high 130’s- mid 40’s. If I hunt more south most of them big bucks I’ve killed would probably be 150-170’s imo. The more south you hunt the easier it is to kill mature bucks

    Michigan needs a 3yr suspension of a "Buck" license. Only does for 3yrs. 3 per year harvest. That will fix michigan
