    • @ReelGreenLawn
      @ReelGreenLawn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That market is spotty. I see good deals on newer models but they’re in the middle of nowhere. Things to consider are people are looking to find those mowers that are nice like yours for $200. Once you start getting into the higher asking price, they usually start looking either towards a new one or commercial greens mowers. They also depreciate hard from their new sales price unfortunately. Here in the DFW area I’d start it high though. A new regular one is ~ $1600, so take a little off of that to start. Just an uneducated guess.. when the season starts around here, you would probably have it sold somewhere ~ $800-1000. Early spring is the hot market around here. You should do pretty well for what you described and only paying $200.

    Picked up a ten blade modern style with B&S 4.75 HP for $550. Needed a throttle cable….tuned it….everything was great until the gas tank started leaking profusely. It developed some cracks. Problem was that model was discontinued. Found a used one luckily for $20. I’m about $700 all in now after a tune up….new belt…oil change and a good backslapping. It’s a loud engine though….kinda wish I coulda found a Honda. Next time. But the lawn looks great and that’s the main thing. Also came with grass catcher and grooved roller.

      If you don’t mind me asking, what type of grass are you cutting and square footage? I’m McLane biased and depending on your area, you can get a great deal on a used one. Plenty of videos and a great Facebook group to help. I would recommend joining an Allett and Swardman owners group on Facebook too, and you can read peoples issues and fixes for the cartridge mowers. I like the idea of them too. My biggest advice is get the one you want, because you’ll be the one using it multiple times a week. Let us all know what you end up with!

    How long should the reel and bed knife last before needing to be replaced? The mclane I’m looking at is about halfway down on the two bolt adjustments. If you say 8yrs, would it be safe to assume I have 4yrs left on the reel and bedknife?

    • @ReelGreenLawn

      That’s a good question but I don’t know the answer on that. Mine has been in the lower position since I got it, and it’s coming up on its third season. I mow 2-3 times a week on average from March - October. It’s still in the same spot. I’ve been watching the used parts market on eBay for pre 1990 reels and bed knifes to for when the time comes.

      For me personally, I wanted a more defined stripe. It also helps with potential scalp marks if your two front wheels that are originally installed don’t roll over the high area you’re mowing over. In the context of this video, if you seen one installed on one you’re wanting to buy, that can be an amenity that you won’t have to pay full price for later. Thanks for the question!

    • @ReelGreenLawn
      @ReelGreenLawn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! Get it cheep just in case. Pre 1990 bed knives are hard to find, and same with the reel. Mine has worn too low this season from using it a lot, and I’m punting the good parts on it right now. It would be cheaper for me to find a post 1990 unit and put my good parts on it from my current mower than replace the parts to new post ‘90 reel, bedknife, and grass deflector. Overall I decided I need a larger unit for almost 7000 sq ft, so that’s why I’m getting rid of it all. Wouldn’t mind finding a nice 25” to play with but they don’t pop up very much around here. Let us all know how it turns out!

    I just pick up 2 separate mclane 20inchers. I had been looking for a little over a year and suddenly two came up for sale near me way cheaper than I had ever seen so I pounced
    The first is a 1999 seven blade, 3.5 hp briggs engine. No grass catcher, and no reel just wheels instead. It would start with lots of starter fluid but then immediately die. I paid $200.
    I threw a new $20 amazon carburetor on, put some new gas, new spark plug, new air filter... it started on the first pull! All in probably $250 and an afternoon in the garage. It was the model where the carb sits on top of and sort of inside the gas tank.
    The 2nd one I picked up is a 2005 five blade, 3.5 hp briggs engine. No grass catcher, no roller, leaking a little gas and a little tough to start. But would start and runs smooth once it's going. Paid $350. The wheel drive was in nice shape with new grooves and had a recent backlap on the blades.
    Excited to find a 5 blade. I like to cut mine pretty tall, 1.5 - 2 inches. The five blade model cuts the best this high. I bought a mclane grooved roller and threw her on the 5 blade already. Lawn is stripped and looking like Augusta national already 😂
