i moved out of a city and into a rural area and my mental health issues are SO MUCH BETTER. even if you cant afford to buy land, the rent might be cheaper and that alone makes it worth it. plus living by where you wanna buy land makes it easier to find that land.
Day, something that may help, this is something am doing. Look for a piece of land you may be able to afford in monthly payments with owner financing. Don't lose the faith in good humans. Someone will help us. 2nd. Read about cannabinoids, reports says they're good to stop and eliminate epilepsy. And 3rd- Just humbly do your best. You and your children will appreciate it.
I bought 5 acres with a home for 18k. It wasn't in livable condition but I fixed it up better than new for about 50k more. I worked 2 jobs for 5 years saving every penny. I also built a 6 car garage for 17k. I have the video of that build. It can be done but doing it is really really hard work.
My husband and I have wanted to create a sustainable homestead for so long. Living paycheck to paycheck is so exhausting and hopeless. Thank you for giving me hope again! :)
It can happen easily these days. I hope you are aware of food pantries in your area. The first sentence in your comment is very encouraging. All is not lost. Here's some ideas. 1) rent a room to a boarder 2) see what you can produce in a garden for your use and to sell. Organic will fetch the best price and you can sell to your local restaurant or grocer. or farmers market. 3) take that humiliating paycheck and invest it in a goat. Make cheeses. Breed it. or pigs. good luck!
Hello Madam Spencer, I live in a very small palace of one living or entry, little kitchen, one room, two closets, one bathroom, and one small but nice patio. In here, I have almost all spaces occupied because I have too many things. What I wanted to tell you is this, even though am limited to a small space, am sprouting some seeds. Currently I have an avocado tree almost 5',5" (my high), 5 orégano plants (4 ready to be planted), two garlic cloves recently planted in the avocado pot, the rest is sprouting, I have tomatoes, cucumbers, black and blueberries (in Miami-Dade) working on so they sprout, mangoes, one is almost a foot tall, beautiful, I always sprout the best. I have a portion of a root or shrub of mariposa (butterfly) is the national flower of Cuba, sprouting some roots, more avocadoes, one pineapple sprouting, one mamey that even though it lost its three leafs am persisting yo have it in water (is getting drier and drier) but in every full moon I cut it do it'll pull its fluids up I hope. I have strawberries, raspberries and guava. So my encouragement to you, don't look at your limitations, you had 50 years and in this time, with all due respects, now I encourage you to leave that in there, I mean, leave your limitations aside, and look fir your potencial. Can you place a seed in some water? Can you purchase some quails? Start slow. Little, and attend that that you're growing, and start saving some in food. Ask your gent to help you. And keep growing, slowly. And conquer over the food chain, the employment chain. And pass the ball or what you are doing to others. You have the potential to win this battle. You are not alone. We're with you!

Hi Becky, I’m so glad I found your channel! My husband and I are looking to start a new life away from the drudgery of city life and learn to live closer to and with nature. Neither of us have any background in homesteading and your vids answer so many questions for us. We’re in the downsizing and budgeting phase but will soon be looking for land. Your homestead looks great and it’s incredible that you’ve pretty much done it all yourself. I truly admire you.
We purchased 5 1/4 acres at the very bottom of the market and paid about half of what raw land was normally selling for at the time and about half of what the property tax appraised the land for. It's on a river and has a seasonal creak on the south border of the property that flows down a gentle hill creating two waterfalls that make beautiful sounds. The property was already built up with a very large geodesic dome home that was not being taken care of, an artesian water well that produces 87 gallons per minute (we had it tested) and a fully functional septic tank and leach field. The home was in foreclosure and the owner/ builder was living there with a gas generator because the electric company cut him off, with three dogs and two cats. The home both inside and out was full of garbage all over the place. There was four inches of wall to wall dog droppings on the carpet where you couldn't see the carpet at all. The kitchen was filled with rotten food, broken dishes on the floor and on the counter tops two feet hi. The roof was leaking all over the place causing black mold, wet insulation and wet drywall. It was beyond disgusting on so many levels. It was also a drug house with needles found all over the place. We had thirteen abandoned vehicles including a 64 seat school buss that we got scrap titles on and sold them. My wife and I are carpenters and knew what we were getting into. We purchased it for $79,000.00 cash from the owner before he lost it to the banks. The owner/ builder wanted 10 grand more than what was owed on the property so he would have extra money besides his retirement for another place to live. 89 grand was what we ended up paying. There was no leans and yes, we went to a title company. The entire process took almost a full year trying to figure out how to purchase it as we had never done this before. It was an extremely difficult process. My wife and I had to learn everything the hard way by taking many trips to the county and asking questions from all the different agencies. Because of our do diligence with the county, I believe that the banks postponed the auction 13 times. I took off from work several times to go to the county and ask questions and on one occasion ran into the auction people and hooked up with there free service but didn't go through them for the purchase because there fast talkers and I thought we would end up paying more than what we did through them than what we ended up paying for it. Now we're 5 years into it and working on the nights and weekends to finish it up out of pocket. We've had to remove all the cabinets, drywall, insulation, electrical, plumbing and everything that wasn't a wood stud and then start replacing the rotted timbers. By the time we finish, it will be at least 75% re framed and all new everything that we built with our own hands and with no hired help. I'm keeping track of all the building expenses and think the total renovation cost will be about $150 thousand and that's with a lot of craigslist deals. We're living in the home but first lived in a $350.00 used trailer and sold it for the same amount we paid for it after using the heck out of it and not cleaning it up. I don't recommend going that trailer direction at all due to the condensation from thin insulation, single pain glass windows and very small accommodations that almost put an end to our marriage. I would recommend building a shed on skids with insulation that you can either keep or sell when done. You can have water delivered, dig a hole in the ground for your black and grey water and get a temporary job site power pole for electricity. There are many ways to do this but I didn't know any of the ways besides cutting all my bills down to nothing or as little as possible. It's amazing how much you can save in a short time especially if you don't have to pay rent. We parked our trailer for two years on private land and paid 200 for that space every month why'll we saved up and got rid of our bills and debt. Thanks Becky for giving people the understanding they need to break free of the debt spiral. I wish I had knows about you during my process! I'm planning on building on more raw land for rental property. My plan is to be a debt free landlord for my retirement.

We live in Hawaii, it’s our home and we were born and raised here. We dream of buying land here one day to start semi-homesteading, but it is so expensive. That’s not including land tax increasing with all the wealthy buying property here. Sometimes I feel like our only hope is to move away and start over, but maybe there’s another angle I haven’t heard about? Its not just owner financing to look at, its called tax liens. Your tax assessor office can sell some over the counter and you can most of the time close on it within a month due to it being on the books over 3 years or more. City just wants it off the books, and banks do NOT like being foreclosed on. It is much less than owner financing, and it can sometimes cost only a few hundred dollars to purchase a tax lien. I almost had one but got outbid. Yep it has its ups and downs but one day, I will have my land. Free and clear of all mortgages, liens, etc. I will have my home.

That’s a lot of “cancelling” lol I started to tour the country in my RV from NYC and fell in love with Texas. Currently looking for land and to purchase a mobile log cabin and call it a day. Can’t wait. Thanks for the video.
I got land in okeechobee fla was paying $200 a mo for it. It just got to be more then I could do. I had to pay $2,500 for water meter $2,500 for blue prints they said of home I could only put but it had mobile homes all around it on dead end road.. And they wouldn't let me put a light pole till they started building home. We were going to put a camper on it and build home they said no. I say just check what you can and can't do before you buy the land I wish I had.
joy house that sucks. We had a similar situation but got lucky bc someone had electric there and the electric company man went ahead and did us a favor. They set it up as if a house was already there but allowed it be hooked to a camper. Cost more monthly but saving over all. My qunt bought probably though that it turned out she wasn't allowed to have a trailer on i cant remember why but its wasnt in town. She sold it for a fraction of the price.

I live in Clarksville TN and I'm planning on buying no more than two acres of land. I'm poor af and I really want to get out of my mom's house. I looked up prices and land on average cost 1500$ per acre and trailers can cost up to 4000$.
Funny -- I do the same thing -- always looking at what's available out there in the form of land and homesteads and we've been on our place for 25+ years with no plans of moving anytime soon. LOL. It's just something I enjoy doing. One other point (which may or may not be in your book) is not going too small when it comes to homesteading. If one wants to have livestock, have a good-sized garden, orchard, woodlot for wood heat, room to raise some of your own feed for your livestock and/or have adequate pasture, a farm pond, and so forth -- it takes a fair-sized piece of property. That's one mistake I see a lot of folks making: They come from an urban or suburban background, so a few acres seems HUGE at the time of purchase and then when they start trying to fit everything they want on it, they soon realize they bought too small.
Wow, once again you come up with advice that really makes sense but is entirely opposite to what most people are saying. Most who give advice to new people looking at homesteading is don't go too large, it's a lot of extra work, you can do a lot in a small space, you don't need that much. etc.... It really encourages getting a small place now then being disappointed later.
How much should I put aside for 10~ laying chickens a few raised plant beds , some trees (apple, orange, lemon), a fish pond, and a horse (enough space for pasture) I want to stay small but maybe that's not the best choice? A river would be nice and I want to build a three-room Earth bag home
To crazy808ish. Well chose name. Don't be fooled by the picture of my youngest adult child. I am likely old enuff to be your 'grandfather'. Homesteading is a way of life and, sure, we may sell some of our abundance I.e. eggs, produce, livestock etc. but, generally, among ourselves, we share, trade and barter. One gets into this lifestyle in order to sustain oneself and one's family without having to rely on commercialized enterprises or government handouts. Oftentimes, we are preppers and/or survivalists. Too often, people's ignorance really jumps out at you when commenting about something they know little to nothing about, or think they know it all. Feed your mind.
You are correct James. That lifestyle you talk about might just be a word to someone who lives in the city but it's very different than what they can possibly even imagine without doing. The people in the country are very different than people in the city and that's a great thing in my opinion. I grew up in a broken home and had to travel from country to suburbs every year. That's how I got my education on the difference at an early age but it's not for everyone. Some people travel to the city's for work but most work at home selling things they make or work local jobs. There's much more variety for work living in the country and believe it or not, you can make even more money than you can in the city without a college education.
I just bought land based upon your last video about this... Biggest jump I have made in my life. It has not been easy in fact it has been obstetrical after obstetrical but i know it will be worth it someday.
Probably the situation here is not exactly the same. But you give good information to consider. Right now I am trying to 'homestead' living in a rented ground-floor apartment with back- and front yard. Fruits and vegetables are growing, next step are chickens ... I do handcrafts, often recycling/upcycling found materials. Also I join in social activities, like a neighbourhood permaculture garden. It might be possible to save money, and find land someone wants to sell ... but it is illegal to build a house (even the tiniest one) on that land to live in. That's the problem in this country (the Netherlands). The rules for building houses are very, very strict! That's why then I'll have look for land in another country, like France or Portugal.
Gosh! I live in the U.K and this is the first time I've heard of Homesteading. I'm interested in buying land and will do some research on what the equivalent in the U.K is.
I bought my land owner finance a few months ago I have 48.17 acres and I paid $325 a month and I been keeping up with my payment so far but the rewards that you get out of having a land I found my land on eBay and it's on the west part of the state that I live in and I love it and I wish I could have done it years and years sooner
Which state? Did it have a house or does it allow living there without a house? A lot of land I've found doesn't let you live on it unless you have a house on it.
No matter what folks may say, it is still a land where if you are determined enough and willing to sacrifice you can achieve your goals. If it were always easy no one would be clicking on Becky's channel.

Ok, today I went through the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald (Just in case someone only wanted to advertise his/her land in Spanish), El Diario De Las Americas (another Spanish Newspaper we have in Miami), gone through El Clarín (another full of adds we have in Dade County), very few but very few sales notices on land I've found this Sunday August 27, 2018. Found more on the web actually but am looking for even cheaper offers. So I guess I'll buy your book Becky!

Yes being stuck in a rental nightmare. Working to pay bills and rent. Sick of it all... My work collegue and I have come up with a plan.. We are going to buy land together so it is affordable. Then we will divide the land it in half. In theory it will work very nicely. We are just on the look out for a nice large acreage.
Good luck! That sounds like a good plan since smaller plots of land are often more expensive than larger ones. I just hope that land division goes well. Dealing with people when it comes to land is tricky.

Love your videos Becky. It's hard growing veggies when it's really hot isn't it? Check out Starry Hilder's channel. She talks about the back to Eden gardening method. I've tried it an it works great because I have a garden that is miles away and I can't always be there to water.
Seller Finance is also great because unlike going through a bank, if you default on the loan, you give it back and that's it. With a seller, it doesn't hurt your credit. Watch "My Biggest Mistake" TH-cam video by Joe Crump. I love his philosophy and yours is similar Becky 😉💯
Becky, Thanks for the great video. Wonder what state is your homestead located. I have been looking to do this for a while but need to figure best state for year round climate. I currently live in Arizona but feel the summers are way too hot to try and cool something off grid or on a budget and I am trying to pick people minds.
I just bought a house, the first year there was a supplemental tax assessment, when you buy property is there a 1st year tax assessment and is the tax included in the price, or how does a yearly tax for the land work.

You know getting the money is not the problem for it. I have a bit from when my mother past (I am thankful for the money rather have my mom). Anywho my problem is finding land. Every time I ask about getting land to put my animals on everyone tells me I have to get 35 acres. And I don't want that. I just can't find anything and it is so frustrating.
If you go by, say, the designs in the Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan, you can essentially fit everything in an acre or less lol If you don't want that or 35 acres, then just check online real estate websites for what best suits your needs. Not whoever gives all that random advice- they're not the ones who will be living there after all!
Your land is so beautiful, would love to know what county you live in. I have lived on both the east and west coasts of Florida and couldn't wait to move back to New England. I just couldn't take the humidity. I was in the mid part of Florida..

To the people out there that have done this I have a question. If you're living paycheck-to-paycheck that means you probably are living in the city and if you're buying a farm piece of land like this lady that is usually in the country how are you going to commute back and forth from working in the city and Living Way in the country how are you going to do the work on the farm when you're so busy working in the city? I can see where you can work in the city save up money and pay off a piece of property but unless you're two people that can be in two places at one time I don't see how you're going to be able to work in the city and work your farm? Can someone explain this to me? I'm sure I'm not the only one that is wondering this so if anyone out there has the answer please share it with us. Y'all have a good day
My mom grew up in the country and still has family there. My aunt commutes about 60 miles one way to a city for her job. I believe she works 10+ hour shifts so she doesn't need to work 5 days a week. Also, we're talking about a city with a population less than 70k. People who live in the country who aren't farmers accept a long commute as a part of life ... or they work locally for a bit less. Many may live without common luxuries like broadband, making remote work almost impossible. It would definitely be a lifestyle change for most. If living paycheck to paycheck means unsecured debt then that may need to be addressed first. But if you were born to live in the country, it's worth it.

It was beyond disgusting on so many levels. It was also a drug house with needles found all over the place. We had thirteen abandoned vehicles including a 64 seat school buss that we got scrap titles on and sold them. My wife and I are carpenters and knew what we were getting into. We purchased it for $79,000.00 cash from the owner before he lost it to the banks. The owner/ builder wanted 10 grand more than what was owed on the property so he would have extra money besides his retirement for another place to live. 89 grand was what we ended up paying. There was no leans and yes, we went to a title company. The entire process took almost a full year trying to figure out how to purchase it as we had never done this before. It was an extremely difficult process. My wife and I had to learn everything the hard way by taking many trips to the county and asking questions from all the different agencies. Because of our do diligence with the county, I believe that the banks postponed the auction 13 times. I took off from work several times to go to the county and ask questions and on one occasion ran into the auction people and hooked up with there free service but didn't go through them for the purchase because there fast talkers and I thought we would end up paying more than what we did through them than what we ended up paying for it. Now we're 5 years into it and working on the nights and weekends to finish it up out of pocket. We've had to remove all the cabinets, drywall, insulation, electrical, plumbing and everything that wasn't a wood stud and then start replacing the rotted timbers. By the time we finish, it will be at least 75% re framed and all new everything that we built with our own hands and with no hired help. I'm keeping track of all the building expenses and think the total renovation cost will be about $150 thousand and that's with a lot of craigslist deals. We're living in the home but first lived in a $350.00 used trailer and sold it for the same amount we paid for it after using the heck out of it and not cleaning it up. I don't recommend going that trailer direction at all due to the condensation from thin insulation, single pain glass windows and very small accommodations that almost put an end to our marriage. I would recommend building a shed on skids with insulation that you can either keep or sell when done. You can have water delivered, dig a hole in the ground for your black and grey water and get a temporary job site power pole for electricity. There are many ways to do this but I didn't know any of the ways besides cutting all my bills down to nothing or as little as possible. It's amazing how much you can save in a short time especially if you don't have to pay rent. We parked our trailer for two years on private land and paid 200 for that space every month why'll we saved up and got rid of our bills and debt. Thanks Becky for giving people the understanding they need to break free of the debt spiral. I wish I had knows about you during my process! I'm planning on building on more raw land for rental property. My plan is to be a debt free landlord for my retirement.

We live in Hawaii, it’s our home and we were born and raised here. We dream of buying land here one day to start semi-homesteading, but it is so expensive. That’s not including land tax increasing with all the wealthy buying property here. Sometimes I feel like our only hope is to move away and start over, but maybe there’s another angle I haven’t heard about? Its not just owner financing to look at, its called tax liens. Your tax assessor office can sell some over the counter and you can most of the time close on it within a month due to it being on the books over 3 years or more. City just wants it off the books, and banks do NOT like being foreclosed on. It is much less than owner financing, and it can sometimes cost only a few hundred dollars to purchase a tax lien. I almost had one but got outbid. Yep it has its ups and downs but one day, I will have my land. Free and clear of all mortgages, liens, etc. I will have my home.

I got land in okeechobee fla was paying $200 a mo for it. It just got to be more then I could do. I had to pay $2,500 for water meter $2,500 for blue prints they said of home I could only put but it had mobile homes all around it on dead end road.. And they wouldn't let me put a light pole till they started building home. We were going to put a camper on it and build home they said no. I say just check what you can and can't do before you buy the land I wish I had.
joy house that sucks. We had a similar situation but got lucky bc someone had electric there and the electric company man went ahead and did us a favor. They set it up as if a house was already there but allowed it be hooked to a camper. Cost more monthly but saving over all. My qunt bought probably though that it turned out she wasn't allowed to have a trailer on i cant remember why but its wasnt in town. She sold it for a fraction of the price.

I live in Clarksville TN and I'm planning on buying no more than two acres of land. I'm poor af and I really want to get out of my mom's house. I looked up prices and land on average cost 1500$ per acre and trailers can cost up to 4000$.
Funny -- I do the same thing -- always looking at what's available out there in the form of land and homesteads and we've been on our place for 25+ years with no plans of moving anytime soon. LOL. It's just something I enjoy doing. One other point (which may or may not be in your book) is not going too small when it comes to homesteading. If one wants to have livestock, have a good-sized garden, orchard, woodlot for wood heat, room to raise some of your own feed for your livestock and/or have adequate pasture, a farm pond, and so forth -- it takes a fair-sized piece of property. That's one mistake I see a lot of folks making: They come from an urban or suburban background, so a few acres seems HUGE at the time of purchase and then when they start trying to fit everything they want on it, they soon realize they bought too small.
Wow, once again you come up with advice that really makes sense but is entirely opposite to what most people are saying. Most who give advice to new people looking at homesteading is don't go too large, it's a lot of extra work, you can do a lot in a small space, you don't need that much. etc.... It really encourages getting a small place now then being disappointed later.
How much should I put aside for 10~ laying chickens a few raised plant beds , some trees (apple, orange, lemon), a fish pond, and a horse (enough space for pasture) I want to stay small but maybe that's not the best choice? A river would be nice and I want to build a three-room Earth bag home

Homesteading is a way of life and, sure, we may sell some of our abundance I.e. eggs, produce, livestock etc. but, generally, among ourselves, we share, trade and barter. One gets into this lifestyle in order to sustain oneself and one's family without having to rely on commercialized enterprises or government handouts. Oftentimes, we are preppers and/or survivalists.
Too often, people's ignorance really jumps out at you when commenting about something they know little to nothing about, or think they know it all.

Yes it makes it difficult to get information when you have to wade through the nonsense.
You are correct James. That lifestyle you talk about might just be a word to someone who lives in the city but it's very different than what they can possibly even imagine without doing. The people in the country are very different than people in the city and that's a great thing in my opinion. I grew up in a broken home and had to travel from country to suburbs every year. That's how I got my education on the difference at an early age but it's not for everyone. Some people travel to the city's for work but most work at home selling things they make or work local jobs. There's much more variety for work living in the country and believe it or not, you can make even more money than you can in the city without a college education.

Probably the situation here is not exactly the same. But you give good information to consider. Right now I am trying to 'homestead' living in a rented ground-floor apartment with back- and front yard. Fruits and vegetables are growing, next step are chickens ... I do handcrafts, often recycling/upcycling found materials. Also I join in social activities, like a neighbourhood permaculture garden.
It might be possible to save money, and find land someone wants to sell ... but it is illegal to build a house (even the tiniest one) on that land to live in. That's the problem in this country (the Netherlands). The rules for building houses are very, very strict! That's why then I'll have look for land in another country, like France or Portugal.

I bought my land owner finance a few months ago I have 48.17 acres and I paid $325 a month and I been keeping up with my payment so far but the rewards that you get out of having a land I found my land on eBay and it's on the west part of the state that I live in and I love it and I wish I could have done it years and years sooner
Which state? Did it have a house or does it allow living there without a house? A lot of land I've found doesn't let you live on it unless you have a house on it.

Ok, today I went through the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald (Just in case someone only wanted to advertise his/her land in Spanish), El Diario De Las Americas (another Spanish Newspaper we have in Miami), gone through El Clarín (another full of adds we have in Dade County), very few but very few sales notices on land I've found this Sunday August 27, 2018. Found more on the web actually but am looking for even cheaper offers. So I guess I'll buy your book Becky!

Yes being stuck in a rental nightmare. Working to pay bills and rent. Sick of it all... My work collegue and I have come up with a plan.. We are going to buy land together so it is affordable. Then we will divide the land it in half. In theory it will work very nicely. We are just on the look out for a nice large acreage.
Good luck! That sounds like a good plan since smaller plots of land are often more expensive than larger ones. I just hope that land division goes well. Dealing with people when it comes to land is tricky.

Thanks for the great video. Wonder what state is your homestead located. I have been looking to do this for a while but need to figure best state for year round climate. I currently live in Arizona but feel the summers are way too hot to try and cool something off grid or on a budget and I am trying to pick people minds.

I just bought a house, the first year there was a supplemental tax assessment, when you buy property is there a 1st year tax assessment and is the tax included in the price, or how does a yearly tax for the land work.

You know getting the money is not the problem for it. I have a bit from when my mother past (I am thankful for the money rather have my mom). Anywho my problem is finding land. Every time I ask about getting land to put my animals on everyone tells me I have to get 35 acres. And I don't want that. I just can't find anything and it is so frustrating.
If you go by, say, the designs in the Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan, you can essentially fit everything in an acre or less lol If you don't want that or 35 acres, then just check online real estate websites for what best suits your needs. Not whoever gives all that random advice- they're not the ones who will be living there after all!

To the people out there that have done this I have a question. If you're living paycheck-to-paycheck that means you probably are living in the city and if you're buying a farm piece of land like this lady that is usually in the country how are you going to commute back and forth from working in the city and Living Way in the country how are you going to do the work on the farm when you're so busy working in the city? I can see where you can work in the city save up money and pay off a piece of property but unless you're two people that can be in two places at one time I don't see how you're going to be able to work in the city and work your farm? Can someone explain this to me? I'm sure I'm not the only one that is wondering this so if anyone out there has the answer please share it with us. Y'all have a good day
My mom grew up in the country and still has family there. My aunt commutes about 60 miles one way to a city for her job. I believe she works 10+ hour shifts so she doesn't need to work 5 days a week. Also, we're talking about a city with a population less than 70k.
People who live in the country who aren't farmers accept a long commute as a part of life ... or they work locally for a bit less.
Many may live without common luxuries like broadband, making remote work almost impossible.
It would definitely be a lifestyle change for most. If living paycheck to paycheck means unsecured debt then that may need to be addressed first.
But if you were born to live in the country, it's worth it.
