The only thing that would have been better is if someone else had come into the theater when you weren't looking, and when you started blubbering, they came over to give you a hug for comfort like a brother.
Some other tragic things that they left out: David was married to his second wife when he passed away in Japan. His marriage to his first wife fell apart after the death of their 13-week-old daughter who died of SIDS. Kerry also had two daughters at the time of his death.
Ive never heard of a movie that had to make things less dramatic. There was another brother who also killed themselves by gunshot. The producers thought it would be too much trauma.
Partially yes, but mostly because Chris' story was far too similar to Mike's, and he took his own life the same way as Kerry, so it would have blended together and potentially felt unrealistic, risking taking people out of the emotional experience rather than contributing to it.
You mean how Fritz ruined the family. His wife was clearly a brainwashed housewife who was “put in her place”. This movie is 100% about toxic masculinity.
The actor who played Mike is such an underrated performance. Everyone talks about Zac, Jeremy and Holt but Stanley Simons was especially heartbreaking to watch as Mike. He didn’t want to take on the family legacy but was forced to and essentially died from it. That was the part that made me cry.
Chris was the youngest brother left out of the movie. Loved wrestling too but sadly due to his health and the low density of his bones from the medication he took he was always getting injured. He also took his own life due to a self inflicted gunshot wound. Kevin was gonna steal a gun from a shop and use it on himself, but stopped after the gunstore worker said "i love you Kev". He also mentions when his dad was older and losing his mind. The father pointed a gun at him and said "you would do it too if you had the guts to" Keven said "it doesnt take guts to die it takes guts to live". The oldest brother had actually died when he was young from electrocution
Not exactly. Kevin had no intention of offing himself. He stole the gun because he knew that was the quickest way for him to get sent to prison, because he knew that was the best place to go where he could just fight everyone since he was so pissed off at the world. But yeah, "We love ya, Kev" snapped him back to reality. He came back in after a moment of reflection, placed the gun back on the counter, gave the three men in the gun store at the time a hug and told them thank you. What's really sad is... to this day, Kevin still speaks about his father with reverence, which just goes to show how deeply Fritz's manipulation truly went. But fortunately Kevin is at peace and considers himself fortunate to be alive. He doesn't even resent wrestling, which shows in both his Hall of Fame speech and his guest appearances on WWE (and I believe AEW as well). Hearing JR on commentary absolutely geek out over the Von Erich Claw definitely struck me in the heart, before I even knew the complete story.
What's worse is this isn't even the whole story. They literally left a brother out. And IMO, they were kind to Fritz Von Erich in comparison to stories I've heard about him from family who were involved in the business back then.
@@jasonpeet6198 I wasn't referring to the one who died as a child. He was mentioned in the movie several times. I was referring to Chris Von Erich who was left out of the movie.
@@jasonpeet6198 Chris was another one of the wrestling brothers. But he was far too small (though he did build muscle mass), and he was far too prone to injury. So, like Mike, injury ruined his chances at accomplishing anything (unlike Mike, he actually WANTED to wrestle), and like Kerry, he took his own life with a gun. There were far too many similarities to really include him without risking making it seem unbelievable, or repetitive, and at the very least taking away from the emotional experience rather than contributing to it. In that, it makes sense for the movie to leave him out.
Here is what they left out The youngest son, Chris was written out. He wanted to join the family business but had brittle bones because of Asthma medication. He shot himself in the head in 1991. Kerry's motorcycle accident was in 1995. His title reign lasted only 18 days and lost the title back to Ric Flair in Japan. The scene when Kevin kept the claw on Flair happened before Mike died . Mike, Kerry and Fritz pulled him off in the actual match. Kerry shot himself because his wife didn't promise a reconciliation. Kevin attempted suicide by stealing a gun from a gun shop. As Kevin was leaving the store owner said "We love you, Kevin.". 10 minutes later he returned the gun and hugged the owner for saving his life.
Kevin never actually intended to attempt suicide. From his own words, he was so pissed off at the world that he just wanted to fight somebody, anybody. He felt the best place where he could just fight people was prison, and he felt the quickest way to get sent to prison would be to steal a gun. He wanted to get caught with it. But yes, "We love ya, Kev" did hit him to the core, where he returned with the gun and the hugs. Though he only planned to go to prison, it definitely did still save his life, both figuratively and literally. He surely would have died in prison, had he actually succeeded.
The biggest rivalry the brothers faced in the ring was against another group of wrestlers called The Fabulous Freebirds. In an interview about the WCCW promotion Michael P.S. Hayes the leader of the Freebirds said that there was an understanding between the Von Erich brothers and the Freebirds in their matches. "Don't knock each other's teeth out and don't break any bones, but everything else was fair game." In other words, they would hit each other really hard, just try not to injure anyone. So, there were nights when they left the ring with bruises, cuts and blackeyes. 16:04 Are the Freebirds.
Freebird Michael P.S. Hayes was also the one to induct the Von Erichs into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009, while Kevin was on hand to accept it for his family.
“I thought I was in for a wrestling movie with Zac Efron, I’m gonna have to get a fucking therapist” REAL. I was sobbing walking out of the movie theater. 😭
It was a tough watch seeing this with my parents but it also reminded me how lucky I was to grow up with the family I did. PS the wrestlers Zac watched from the window later in the movie are the real Kevin’s two sons, now grown and wrestlers themselves ❤🙏🏻
This movie broke me into a million pieces. Cried when I watched it in theaters and cried again with you. There also was another brother that they didn't show in the movie named Chris who took his life at the age of 21 which is so heartbreaking.

There was actually another youngest brother who committed suicide as well that wasn’t included in the movie cause it would have just been too much. It’s insane how sad this story is.
Sadly, it could have actually taken away from the emotional experience of the movie to include Chris, if only because of how similar his story was to Mike's, and how similar his end was to Kerry's. And the last thing you want is for people to be checked out at the end.
Kevin's sons are wrestlers and he helps them out. They also have a daughter doing sports. Kevin liked the movie and liked the way Zac portrayed him in it.

The guys did such an amazing job, but the MVP of this movie is Zac💐💐👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Now, he has a star on the Walk of Fame and is finally being acknowledged as a phenomenal actor❤❤
For me it was Jeremy Allen White, playing Kerry. I don’t get why but he just became my favourite from the start. But I completely get and totally respect your opinion. Zac was amazing in this movie.
the dad chose david because kevin lost that other fight. he always moves onto the next son after one fails. they actually had another brother named chris who also committed suicide because he wanted to wrestle too but he was too underweight to be able to compete. the director said that he left out chris and essentially mixed him and mike together because he he thought the movie wouldn’t have been made if it had all of that tragedy (which is ironic.)
Chris actually did wrestle professionally for a while, but because he was smaller and physically weaker than his brothers, he did not have much success in the ring. He killed himself because he was also forced into wrestling to replace a dead brother after Mike died, the pressure and feeling inferior to his brothers made him depressed so he killed himself. His situation was very similar to Mike's. Like Chris, Mike was also forced into wrestling after David died and also killed himself.
@@iamlinda100 I thought Chris actually wanted to wrestle, but his body was just too injury prone, and he just was not able to perform at the level he wanted.
Mike was injured during a tour of Israel. The WCCW shows were being pirated overseas and so the Von Erichs were major stars over there. I believe Mike had the surgery over there and the infection set in after he came home.
Watched this yesterday at the cinema with my partner as he really wanted to see it and I wasn’t that interested. Needless to say kept holding back tears until the end and just kept hoping the parents would step up and do better to the point I was angry and disgusted with their cold outlook on feelings. The brotherly love was beautiful but it was too tragic at the end 💔
The scene where their mother sees David’s “ghost” behind her while watching the match he was supposed to compete in made me cry so hard that actually I got a pimple on one of my eyelids. My best friend committed suicide a little over a week ago, I’ve seen her “ghost” multiple times already. Usually it’s in populated places like the grocery store or in the hallway at school. If you’ve experienced a tragic loss like that before then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
So sad that the real story is even more depressing. The other brother Chris also ended his own life. His story is very similar to Michael's. But he loved wrestling but had numerous health issues that kept him form being able to live his dream. Eventually leading to him committing suicide.
This tones down the extent of the tragedy, if you can believe it. There was a sixth brother, Chris. He was a little bit like Mike (probably too small to be in wrestling - smallest of the lot in fact) and a little bit like David (super wanted to be in the business). He unalived himself like Mike and Kerry when it was clear he didn’t have a future in the business. The filmmakers made the decision to leave Chris out because they didn’t want audiences to think they were ramping up the tragedy to unrealistic heights.
Kevin's sons are currently wrestling and one of Kerry's daughters tried her hand at wrestling and had some success but would eventually retire after only a few years in the ring.
Kerry didn't get into his accident the night he won the title. He would only hold the championship for two weeks before losing it back to Ric Flair. The NWA didn't trust Kerry with the title because he had missed some shows prior to winning the title due to his drinking and drug use, and they didn't want to keep it on him. They let him win the title as a favor due to David's death, and I could be wrong, but Kevin was never even considered to be in the match with Ric, as Kerry was the bigger star despite the fact that Kevin was more dependable than Kerry.
Hearing "I don't know who this guy is but I like Rey Mysterio" when Chavo Guerrero JR is on the screen hurt my little WCW Cruiserweight heart. I know he was probably talking about the Shiek and Kevin but it was irony that hurt.
I live in North Dallas, Denton, Texas where this family lived. Such an incredibly sad story, and it's actually worse than the movie portrayed. There was a whole other younger brother who ended up taking his own life as well, but the director felt like it was too much for the movie. On top of that, their dad died shortly after all the other brothers from brain cancer, I believe. Also, Kevin talks about how he didn't like how his dad was portrayed in the film.
Nobody was a bigger star in Dallas than the Von Erich boys. I dare say Stone Cold Steve Austin not only stands at a close second behind them, but he himself would willfully take that step back as well.
in reality there were actually 6 brothers, the youngest brother Chris was also a wrestler and like Mike and Kerry Chris also killed himself, he died before Kerry. But Chris was excluded from the movie because the director felt his story was too similar to Mike's, they were both forced into wrestling to replace a dead brother & both died by suicide. The director felt it was too repetitive & it would just be too much tragedy so he decided to exclude Chris completely from the movie, which is very sad. The real story of the Von Erich family is even more tragic than the movie, 6 brothers and only 1 brother Kevin survives.
Yeah, I mean I can kinda understand why. But it’s still sad to see him left out. I know the director did mention he try to make Mike’s character like Chris as well to make up for it a little. I also know he did stretch the truth on other parts of the film as well. And then talk to Kevin about it I believe after the final draft was completed. I am a sucker for true stories personally I do like it when the story is real to the actual events as possible. Which is why I loved “Society of the snow” a lot plus my parents are friends with one of the survivors. And the director involved all the survivors from the very beginning. I do appreciate when film directors do that with true stories. But the last scene of all the brothers meeting in the afterlife teared me up some. That poor family just endured so much heartache.
While it is also an emotional film, you should check out the movie Zac Efron did before this one (The Greatest Beer Run Ever). It mixes some humor with somber reality of war and losses.
This movie was such an emotional and beautiful movie. Literally throughout the majority of the movie especially the last scene of the movie, I was bawling like a baby in the theater and had a headache. This movie broke me and every time I keep thinking about it, I cry😢😢😢
+Puggapillar It seems the "family curse" ended after their father died (he died 3-4yrs after Kerry). Kevin has 4 kids (two boys and two girls). Both his sons are now wrestlers and both chose to carry the Von Erich name. Kerry had two daughters before his passing Holly & Lacy. Lacy was a wrestler for a few years and also chose to carry the Von Erich name. No more tragedies have befallen the family. I think the "family curse" was actually a curse on the father or karma come to the father for using a Natzi persona and draping a Schwastika flag over his shoulders as a cape during his wrestling days.
I grew up with this family and this cursed family. They were so big when the deaths happened it was front page news and lead stories on newscast. They were gods
On July 2, 1983, I watched an episode of WCCW, which I had been watching every week for a year. On that day, David Von Erich made me want to be a professional wrestler. Flash forward to February 1984, David died in Japan, also killing my dreams of being a professional wrestler.
I used to be a big WWF fan during the late 80s and early 90s era and went to many WWF live shows in Indiana & Illinois. I actually got to see Kerry wrestle twice and very briefly met him when he was chatting with some fans and signing autographs after one of the shows. Watching this movie it was Kerry's scenes that hit the hardest because he was the one I remember. I didn't know much of the other Von Erich brothers because that wasn't WWF and a lot of it was before I got interested in wrestling.
Hi Alex glad u watched this movie, I seen it a few days back in the cinema and wow was I a mess sobbing. I lost my brother at a young age and when each brother died omg it broke me. Amazing movie though 😢
Thank you my brother was 26 when he passed, young lad a whole life ahead of him, it was just us 2 so it hit me hard watching The Iron Claw, every brother who died and seeing Zach's character break down at the end so powerful such a sad story.
It always breaks my heart knowing that the wedding scene is the last time we see the Von Erich’s and more specifically the brothers HAPPY before the “curse” takes over
This movie left out some other tragic stuff. They had another brother named Chris who also took his own life because his health would never allow him to wrestle. David also got married and ended up losing his baby as well. Dottie divorced Fritz in '92 or '93. She died a few years ago I believe. Fritz died in '97
I hate when people argue that wrestling being scripted makes it fake. I'd argue it's more impressive and takes more skill to perform a choreographed battle without actually hurting each other while making it look like they are beating the ever loving piss out of them. It seems a hell of a lot easier to just run in there with no regard to anyone's safety and bash somebody's face in. I have such a high respect for wrestlers and their craft.
Yeah "watch your fists" means that Kevin was punching with a closed hand. In wrestling (at least at this time) throwing a closed fist was against the rules! You had to punch but without your hadn fully closed. Wrestling can be weird, but it is awesome! :) I highly recommend Eyepatch Wolf's video "Professional Wrestling is Stupid and Beautiful and I Love it", that goes over how there is a lot more to it as an art form than 'fake fighting'! :)
Chavo sr. & Eddie were brothers: Chavo sr. was born in 1949 Eddie was born in 1967 Chavo jr. was born in 1970 Eddie was Chavo jr.'s uncle, even though they were close in age
Harley Race's throwing the ref out of the ring was actually very smart and a common tactic. If you lose by disqualification, then you lose the fight but you keep your title until you actually lose a fight, no disqualifications. Could have been planned, but could also be that Race went against what the plan was because he was annoyed he was probably supposed to lose his title there.
Oh, definitely planned. Back in the day, they used to build feuds over months and months before finally getting to a proper Championship match, especially if there were plans to have the belt change hands. Those months are used to gauge crowd response, and determine if the contender was actually capable of delivering on the level of a World Champion. So its basically a lengthy job interview where they overanalyze every little flaw they could find. This has led to some iconic World Champions,... but it has also led to some serious territorial drama. Its the whole reason Capital Wrestling Corporation had left the NWA and crowned its own World Champion, changing their name to World Wide Wrestling Federation, then just World Wrestling Federation, and now WWE.
One of the things that Kevin did not like about the movie was how his father Fritz was portrayed but he understood that from a story perspective it needed an antagonist of some sort. To this day he calls his father a "decent and honorable man," and blames the deaths of his brothers who died by their own hands on their substance abuse.
To be fair, I think Kevin kinda chooses to see his father in a better light than he really was. I certainly can't blame him, the dude has earned the right to see the tragedy of his family anyway he wants to a thousand times over. But when you read about the things his dad did, there's not a lot of objective ways to say that he was innocent or even a very good person. Hell, he openly admitted to having favorites among his kids
@@kylewilson2819 I have read a lot about the family, and I've seen a lot on them too. I think that you're correct in how Kevin is probably choosing to remember his father in a better light than Fritz probably deserves, but I think that the movie also probably shows Fritz in a worse way than he probably was. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. The movie did get a lot of the history incorrect in order to tell a better story as most movies do, so I can't take the movie as complete truth either.

David was married to his second wife when he passed away in Japan.

Pam is teaching them it's ok to express their feelings. She seen how her in laws toxic relationships ruined their family.
You mean how Fritz ruined the family. His wife was clearly a brainwashed housewife who was “put in her place”. This movie is 100% about toxic masculinity.
This movie is a rough one, and you going in blind. Whew. Dear lord...I need to give you a hug after watching this.
For those wondering about the brother left out, Kevin Von Erich did understand why and was touched by the movie from all accounts.
What's worse is this isn't even the whole story. They literally left a brother out. And IMO, they were kind to Fritz Von Erich in comparison to stories I've heard about him from family who were involved in the business back then.
I'm sure showing how a 4 year old dies would be too dark even for Hollywood
@@jasonpeet6198 I wasn't referring to the one who died as a child. He was mentioned in the movie several times. I was referring to Chris Von Erich who was left out of the movie.
Fritz is such a trash human who literally ruined the lives of his whole family. His sons and wife all suffered at his hands
Here is what they left out
The youngest son, Chris was written out.

The dad out lived his sons but died of cancer and I hope in his old age he thought about and understood how he treated his sons was wrong.😪
well most of his sons, Kevin is still alive of course.
"We'll be your brothers dad"
The biggest rivalry the brothers faced in the ring was against another group of wrestlers called The Fabulous Freebirds. In an interview about the WCCW promotion Michael P.S. Hayes the leader of the Freebirds said that there was an understanding between the Von Erich brothers and the Freebirds in their matches. "Don't knock each other's teeth out and don't break any bones, but everything else was fair game."
In other words, they would hit each other really hard, just try not to injure anyone.
I cried when I saw this in theaters. I already knew the story, but they really made you feel it.
“I thought I was in for a wrestling movie with Zac Efron, I’m gonna have to get a fucking therapist”
REAL.
This poor guy's mental health during and after this film. New sub, hope that helps a tiny bit in your recovery lol.
This movie broke me into a million pieces. Cried when I watched it in theaters and cried again with you. There also was another brother that they didn't show in the movie named Chris who took his life at the age of 21 which is so heartbreaking.
The guy from the bear, Jeremy Allen White, is more recognized for his time spent on the US version of Shameless.
This movie was so sad!!!! 😢 I’m the oldest of 4 and I would be BROKEN if I lost my siblings! They are literally my best friends! I loved the ending how years and years of abuse from the dad and teaching him it’s not okay to cry and it took minutes for his sons to teach him it was okay to cry!!! I’m still crying writing this!!! 😢😢
Yh I cried at that scene with Kevin and his 2 sons and I NEVER EVER cry. When I saw Zac Efron was doing a wrestling movie, I thought it would be a jolly, cheerful Disney High School Musical-like movie...but was so sad :(
@@scratchydemus right!!! I just thought it was a true story about a famous wrestling family and their rags to riches story not all their tragedies but that is real life no matter how bad you think you have it someone out there definitely has survived worse things, makes me grateful for my family and definitely my siblings!! 💕
@ashd2179 Yh for sure. I didn't know anything about the Von Elrich family and I am a huge wrestling fan. But I agree....no matter how bad you think you have it, someone else has it worse.
Ur so underrated man, always banger after banger video keep up the hard work
Kevin's sons are wrestlers and he helps them out. They also have a daughter doing sports. Kevin liked the movie and liked the way Zac portrayed him in it.
You should have seen this in theater. The amount of gulps, tears being held back, all grown men. It was like being in the theater watching interstellars 23 years scene but for 2 hours.
I watched Dark Side of the Ring about the Von Erichs before watching Iron Claw.
But wasn't prepared for that final river scene when seeing Iron Claw in theaters and the ending for Kevin.
It's a shame Chris is not in this movie
The Dark Side of the Ring episode is a tough watch as well, but it is nice to see how Kevin is at peace with himself
Dude....how tf does a child even get that high in the air. That was the funniest moment this entire mivie
I knew the story going in do i teared up a bit watching on my own. Watching your reaction had me full on blubbering, I could not help but feel with you throughout the video.
Ah man 😢 this one hurts especially when you watch the dark side of the ring episode 😪
Thank you for giving us such an emotional reaction. That movie truly hurts. I am so happy i found and follow your channel for 2 years now. Keep it up and stay healthy🥰
Zach and Jeremy killed me in This movie
The actor who played Mike made me cry. Those 2 weren’t the only great performances
@@janb92 Ik they aren’t but I’ve seen them in more stuff than him so just seeing those performances rlly made happy. Everyone in the film did great

He's like one of those beauty pageant moms. They push their daughters to live their dreams. The daughters are just trophies.
Dark Side of the ring has an amazing episode about the family and is actually a really good show overall for any wrestling fans past and present
I had never cried in a movie theater before, but I spent the last 20 minutes just weeping for this one. Such a good movie ❤️
I do, mate. My heart is with you!
I wasn’t expecting this movie to be so heavy like Jesus man.
So sad that the real story is even more depressing. The other brother Chris also ended his own life. His story is very similar to Michael's. But he loved wrestling but had numerous health issues that kept him form being able to live his dream. Eventually leading to him committing suicide.
@@oIRONITEo What? Oh my god…..
@@elijahbaker781 yep, another brother committed suicide, they excluded him from the movie
Stone Cold Steve Austin said the Von Erichs were a big inspiration for him wanting to become a professional wrestler.
God Bless the Von Erichs.
I am late to watching the Iron Claw and have since watched a lot of reaction videos. Yours is, by far, my favorite!
Wow, thanks! Thanks for watching me cry 😭
it's okay to cry, @@Puggapillar
in reality there were actually 6 brothers, the youngest brother Chris was also a wrestler and like Mike and Kerry Chris also killed himself, he died before Kerry.
I was not expecting this film to be as powerful as it was. This film deserves awards.
Great movie!❤ Love your channel, Pug!👍🙂
I went to the theater seeing this aware of how much it made so many people cry, but my god i was NOT prepared.
Hi Alex glad u watched this movie, I seen it a few days back in the cinema and wow was I a mess sobbing.
I lost my brother at a young age and when each brother died omg it broke me.
Amazing movie though 😢
Sorry for your loss
Thank you my brother was 26 when he passed, young lad a whole life ahead of him, it was just us 2 so it hit me hard watching The Iron Claw, every brother who died and seeing Zach's character break down at the end so powerful such a sad story.
RIP the Von Erich brothers and Bruiser Brody 🙏
I saw this in theaters with my brother and FUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 DESTROYED US BOTH. We keep in touch alot more now😅😅 but very sad movie
It always breaks my heart knowing that the wedding scene is the last time we see the Von Erich’s and more specifically the brothers HAPPY before the “curse” takes over
This was a gorgeous movie in all senses of the word and definitely deserved some nominations!
Ooof, this one took me out! Still wiping tears😭😭
Alex jokes be like: ' 'I think it's safe to say that Zac efrON had put his effort ON this role' '
The first Kevin Von Erich match was Chavo Guerrero Sr... Chavo Jr's father and Eddie Guerrero Uncle, I believe it's his uncle.
Chavo sr. & Eddie were brothers:
Chavo sr. was born in 1949
Eddie was born in 1967
Chavo jr. was born in 1970
Eddie was Chavo jr.'s uncle, even though they were close in age
The movie did get a lot of the history incorrect in order to tell a better story as most movies do, so I can't take the movie as complete truth either.
favorite film of last year honestly
