    Your work is great Ben. You’re obviously very talented and have a good eye for detail. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest equipment to produce great images.

      Thank you. And even better, I don’t have the latest phone. The IPhone XS is a few years old, so a newer one will be even better. I enjoyed making this video, I thought it would be a nice twist.

    How very refreshing to see a DSLR user.
    Just goes to prove you don’t need expensive gear to take ,make and create great images.
    Once again very refreshing to see the DSLR camera in action.Frankly seeing and hearing that mirrorless cameras are
    the way to go has become very,very tiresome.
    Thank you for bringing this to us.
    Have subscribed.

      Thanks Aston. The theory and reasoning behind how I make the edits has been covered in some of my previous videos (link below) but each images is unique and I will mix and match how I edit to suit the mood of the image. This was quite a punchy edit, sometimes I will opt for a subtle approach or sometimes emphasising a particular focal point. This building doesn’t really have that.

    I was at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa a few years ago, admiring a photo exhibit. The person beside me looks at me and says that the featured photographer (I forget who it was) must have had a good camera. I responded that maybe he did, but that his images were good not because of his camera, but because of his talent. You just proved that point, which I think is an important one for photographers to remember. Thanks for the great video!

      Thank you for the kind words Jean, I appreciate that. I agree, and there are many examples of understanding your tools to get the best out of them. I am an architect and I wouldn’t ever consider saying that the pen or pencil I was using to sketch a building was limiting my creativity!

    Holy unexpected plot twist, Batman! Seriously, great video as usual Ben. Been a follower of yours for a while now. I am glad you have given us insight to your editing process (ever since your Scotland trip) as I love the finished look. But after much thought, I don't want to use that method of editing because I would just be a Ben Harvey copy wanna be (or Joel's, or Julia Anna, or JC Images)! Gotta find my own way of achieving a similar look without it looking exactly the same as if you had done it. Know what I mean? Nowadays I get more from your videos on the shooting process than the editing process. Cheers!

      @benharveyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice Batman reference :-)
      Glad you liked the video, and I would confidently say that even if you were stood next to me on that day our images would look different. I don’t know if I have a style yet, my images change from photo to photo - so don’t think of it as copying unless you go to this building and try to replicate my image. I have been inspired to visit buildings and locations because of other photographers but never tried to emulate their edits. Use whatever tools and plugins gets you to your end goal - but I wouldn’t beat yourself up thinking that you are copying. Just enjoy it and tag me on the photos when you post them!

      I think it took the title ‘worlds smallest DSLR’. I quite like it actually, it makes really nice images with a 50mm 1.8 on it. I had to take the pink strap off it for the video though :-)

    • @NatsWright
      @NatsWright 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yeah, pink strap would have been a little stand out! It sure is a tiny camera, and probably still is the most dinky traditional dslr too. One camera i'd maybe like to get is the panasonic G100, while its not a great camera, it seems a little under rated by folks because it was overshadowed by the Sony Z-V1. I love trying different cameras, and adding them to my gear, whether old or new!

  • @kevinjones6328
    @kevinjones6328 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think people forget about going second hand with cameras when they're on a budget. You can pick up some really good cameras that are, admittedly, a few years old but considering that many of them were considered 'professional' or high end prosumer cameras when they were released you get a lot of bang for your buck. In many cases they're the same price or cheaper than an entry level DSLR and I'd suggest that even though they're old tech they're at least comparable in features and are usually far better built.
    Lenses are a bit harder to get a bargain on though.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree - I pretty much buy all my lenses second hand from MPB. The cameras I tend to buy new, if they are a new model - but I have a second hand Canon 5d3 and it does an amazing job for landscapes and portraits. I had the 5d mk2 before that and it would still stand the test of time for landscapes - it is primarily the focusing system that really lacked on that era of camera.

    M. Night Shyamalan watch out! If I'm being pedantic, one observation is that the iPhone XS might be the camera many already have, but isn't it about the same price as that DSLR and lens combined? And that tripod? $$$ or rather £££. Good content, thanks!

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a very good point. But it is a fair assumption that the vast majority of people have a mobile phone and the XS is not the latest or greatest - so the message is you don’t even need the top of the range mobile phone to create good images. But yes the ‘proper’ camera is cheaper than a new iPhone.

    Just unloading all my Canon lenses after an unsuccessful 2 days in Aberdeen just at the point where you disclosed you used your iphone so definitely your venture out was more successful than mine Ben. Although in my case it was nothing to do with the gear, it was operator error in this instance and not being attentive enough when setting up. I would say you pulled this off and do you see yourself going back as it would be interesting to see what difference you could make between the iphone image and one with your full frame gear.
