    Really good solid choices Aonixo. Miramar and Pendleton are exactly like you describe them. MCRD San Diego is really great because it's a small quiet base as long as you're not caught up in recruit training. Weather at the Stumps is something else but they've really grown the base so it's all good. My overall top pick is Schwab on the Rock because it's the farthest regular post away from all headquarters in the Corps thus you have the least amount of BS.

    I've been to all of those bases for training minus Camp Foster....my 1st duty station was MCBH, Kane'ohe that base is very luxurious also...there is alot to do there as well...but if people rush through all of it...due to it being on an island....you can run out of things to do....but over all...I enjoyed it...Miramar was my 2nd duty station...my son was born @ Camp Pendleton....then 29 Palms...I was in hell...lol....& then Camp Lejeune...I was in even more hell...over all...I loved all base experiences.

    Agree Camp Foster, got so lucky to have that as my first duty station. Travelled around Oki during my time there. Saw Hansen and Schwab, back in the early 80's those places were nothing. Camp Lejeune, hated that place. Jacksonville, just that one word says it all. :(

  • @sgtrod

    Yuma is a favorite. But only cause I spent 5 years of my 10 years in the Corps there and had to get used to it. And it’s a big part of my life, met my wife there down in San Luis Mexico. YPG Army base and Snow Birds are there too.

  • @sgtjarhead99
    @sgtjarhead99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Cherry Point? We used to call that base "Cherry Pit" back in the '80s. I much preferred Lejeune/New River/Johnson in the Jacksonville area over Cherry Point in those days. Not that they're significantly better, it's just that the area offered a lot more as far as fishing and hunting opportunities.

    • @joshuazurcher4019
      @joshuazurcher4019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hunting Opportunities? Cherry Point and Lejuene are on opposite sides of the Croatan Natl Forest, with 9 Mile Rd running between them. Not much difference

    Too bad MCAS El Toro isn’t open anymore. I really liked being there. Quantico was also nice, historic, nice forest next to it, loved the small-town feel it had. Camp Hansen was good, Kinville was fun and had a lot of good places to eat (miss the yakisoba), but a bit too far away from Kadena. I also liked Norfolk, although technically not a Marine base. The chow at Camp Pendleton was outstanding!

    • @bigd6709
      @bigd6709 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      El Toro was a good base... Tustin was nicer.... smaller base and better chow.... either way, entire community of karens n such hated both bases ruining their peaceful, quiet atmosphere....

    When I was in over 50 years ago, Camp Hansen for Okinawa Ken Village for $5 you got a $2 short time, a 75 cent water buffalo steak and enough 90 proof sake to get drunk, Pendleton was OK but the girls back then were into surfer dudes with long hair, and that left the Marines out. After getting back from the Nam went to Camp Lejune, which sucked, the closet town "J"ville was the pits, so I did three separate TADs down to Camp Garcia in Vieques Puerto Rico, which was the absolute best, best for beaches, best for women, best all year round climate! Too bad they closed it up!

      We must have chewed the same ground together, these new boots really don't appreciate the new duty stations. San Diego-Quonset Huts, Okinawa-Tents, Campendelton -Tents, I Corps Vietnam-What ever you can get, 29 Stumps-Tents, I lucked out on my second visit to San Diego, I had NCO quarters upstairs by the parade deck.

    The bachelor barracks at Miramar was great. The older ones did suck, but if your unit had the newer ones you had your own room with a walk-in closet and only shared the bathroom and kitchenette with one other person. Nice not having a couple of roommates in your room.

    My first two years, 1981-82, were at Camp Pendleton 12 Area (where Vandergrift meets the road to Naval Weapons Station). At that time there was nothing there other than work/duty related things. It was probably a mile walk to the E Club. None of us had any money, but if we could get a few guys to pool their money we'd get a case or two of beer and walk to the old trestle (long since gone) and sing oldies like Duke Of Earl. I have lost track of those guys but remember them: Wilson, Berry, Brady, Anderson. Great bunch of guys.

    73-77: 1. K-Bay!!!! hands down the best, prettiest, best weather, best liberty, best floats. 2. MCRD San Diego. No wonder us P.I. Marines laughed, because it was a paradise. Boot Camp without mosquitoes? Great place to go to Radio school [FROC, 2531]. TJ wasn't off limits, and the two best city's in S. California were 11/2 hours away from each other. 3. Geiger/New River. Yes, it's part of Lejeune, but not connected to Mainside. Great floats, easy swoops to the East Coast, topsail and Wilmington beaches. 4. Camp Smith, Oahu. Lots of Brass, but beautiful beach, a half hour drive to Waikiki or Hotel St., and the only Marine base I ever saw that had beer vending machines! Everywhere else , especially Schwab, sucked!

    Retired Corpsman, agree with you about Miramar being#1, but I was stationed there in the early 70's when it was a Naval Air Station.
    Also agree with you about Camp Pendleton being #2, was stationed there in the early 70's, when I was with both 2/3 in 1970 and 2 /7 at the 62 area near San Clemente which was also President Nixons Western White House.
    Also agree with you on Cherry Point as being #3, my last two years in the Navy was when I was with 2nd MAW retiring in 1988.
    My #4 is also on Okinawa but it's Camp Hansen, was stationed there in 70-71 when I was with the 12th Marines.

      @@davidbaker6941 I liked how all the beaches were close by. Nice for a getaway. Laguna Beach was nice, Santa Ana had everything you needed. I was at MAG-11 and it was almost like having a regular job. The chow hall was nice as well, not great food, but it was more like a cafeteria.

      Just remember every person feels that way when you get older you will realize you were as good as anyone. Dont ever think that girl is too good for you an average looking guy can get any girl almost, just know she doesn't feel the way you feel about yourself unless you spill it out. Just say Hi how are you a genuine smile and she will be impressed and just remember she is just as nervous as you. You look at other people as though they are better, who gives a fuck what 99% of people think about you. As soon as you walk away they will forget you. You have it in you just practice talking to people have a FEW! drinks not drunk and just dont give a fuck and be polite and genuine. Fuck the person who thinks they are special youll meet a few but you can be anyone make believe you are in a play what ever. I know its corny but cliché is cliché for a reason its basic fact. It took me years to realize I was a really good looking guy (not my words several women told me years layer) epically on Facebook and I thought these girls too good d for me come to find ot they really liked me and I was to low self esteemed to know it
