I really hope that this series becomes successful enough that you can invest in higher magnifications and better equipment! I love this series!
They need to make a patreon page
I want to see these cells under a electron microscope
@@Seventenitis But then they'd be dead instead of swimming around. It'd be a little depressing
@@Seventenitis also an electron microscope does not capture movement, so it would be depressing to kill those little cells we adore so much AND it would be much less interesting, though you could get a better understanding of the surface of the cells, the inside of the cells and the movement would be hard to discern or enjoy
I don't know it's cool seeing through them but I'd like to their membrane from the outside and those little whiskers they move with
That last shot is really great.
Sometimes you forget it's all 3 dimensional but this shows it.
The rotating ciliate at the end was so cute! It's like it's trying to show off its body to us.
There is something hypnotic about it.
If you closlely it eats a critter
One can almost see a stripy pattern on it's cell membrane
It reminded me of this video lol

@@mikerich32Maybe they're related.
10:18 it is so *rare* to see the 3D shape of an single celled organism!! Thank you!
I was amazed when I saw the cell spin! Probably the coolest thing I've seen this week
I honestly didn't even notice that. Thanks for pointing it out ^^
That was so cool
Thank the cell for spinning.
YESS
Hi, Biomedical Scientist here, did my observation of protozoan and protist practical all the way back in first year. We used a water thickener to slow down the Volvox we observed - 2% methyl cellulose in the water might help when preparing slides
Maybe guar gum? 8x stronger than corn starch.
@@starrychloe Poissibly, you can add methyl cellulose on a drop by drop basis, gradually making the slide more viscous, when viewing live micro-organisms, you do not seal the slide otherwise they die or go inert due to lack of oxygen, if they are moving too fast, pop the top and add another drop!
No one asked.
@@coronalight77 No, they didn't did they... So, I am a Biomedical Scientist , did my observation of protozoan and protist practical all the way back...
@@coronalight77 I wonder what the purpose of a comment section is.
Ah...11.5 minutes of calm in the midst of a chaotic world. Never knew an education video about microbiology could be used as an anxiety therapy. Thank you guys ❤
You could make an hour-long relaxation video of that ciliate gently spinning at the end, and I'd watch it.
i think it's so good for anxiety because it lets us detach from our reality and go somewhere totally different. at least it's true for me.
That's one of the reasons some of us enjoy playing with microscopes so much! When I have a water sample with interesting critters in it, I can spend hours making slides from it and looking at it and it has the most amazing calming effect on me. Most of my know-how is thanks to James, who's so amazingly generous with his time and gives wonderful advice.
+
Thank you for letting the clip at 6:02 play out. My inner OCD was screaming at me like "don't you dare cut to something different now, the thing has to curlycurl ALL the way!!!!"
Mine too lol
🅱️eggiatoa
what a refreshing channel ! beautiful/clear narration, no annoying jokes, non-aggressive music, beautiful imagery - just information presented in an entertaining way. thank you !
How your master of microscopes manages to keep focus while zooming around at +100x magnification, pure magic! James is truly gifted
Yes, he is very skilled at microscopy!
I cried a bit when I realized I'm witnessing brownein motion.... It just made me really happy... Thanks Hank!
I said "brownian motion" together with Hank. It felt like a kind of achievement
The beauty of knowledge can make me have a good cry; tears of wonder; tears of viewing the profound!
That little bell telling me there is more hank talking about tiny amazing curiosities is like a tiny oxytocin bump in my day.
Dare I say it's rather a serotonin bump. Unless you have romantic feelings for Hank's voice. In which case I wont judge.
@@noradrenalin8062 Well, as long as we're not judging, I feel free to say that the "laid back, mellow, stoner Hank is easy on the ears. Not that the excited, somewhat over-caffeinated Hank doesn't have his moments!!! Just sayin'.... 😉
@@noradrenalin8062 Let's just say both? ::blushes::
That extra space though. Always gives away a google look up.
I have never seen a channel dedicated to micro organism! Definitely a day 1 subscription since there is so much content to be coming since bacteria and microbes are so diverse than any other multi cellular organism because of rapid reproduction able to generate thousands of generations in a single year!
“I then most always saw, with great wonder, that in the said matter there were many very little living animalcules, very prettily a-moving.” The first time must have been awe inspiring.
Love this channel. I'm a fan of PBS digital studios and had your first episode recommended to me based on my search history litterally hours after it came out. I'd searched all over TH-cam for Cells doing their thing under a microscope but this is the perfect combination of footage and information and I love the relaxed/soothing feel of it all. THANK YOU!
Wow this is the most beautiful video on the channel so far, excellent work you guys!
I’ve never truly appreciated the stunning beauty of the micro cosmos until this channel. Thank you I look forward to seeing more.
7:16 ... the colours of the Stentor remind me of Van Gogh's The Starry Night painting ❤
It really does. I have a strong urge to paint Stentor because of this show. They are beautiful.
David Daniels Craftsman Aren’t their intentional colored backdrops to make the cells look more colorful though?
i only realize how stressed i am when i start watching these videos and relax immediately. i swear even my heart rate slows down.
This has become one of my favorite channels on YT. Great videos & awesome narration............ :)
Man I instantly fell in love with this series.
This and PBS Eons are my favorite :D
I hope there'll be many many more
I dunno what you guys did but you have sparked a new love for the microkosmos as well as microscopy. I could spend hours staring at these little guys
1000X magnification for the win! Any chance you guys will premier any eucaryotic organisms like fungi, such as molds and yeasts? Would love to see em grow in Sabouraud Dextrose agar, and then u can make easy fungal tape mounts.
I hear they are really fun guys to make films about... :o)
Protists are much cooler tho
I love these. It feels like an educational guided meditation because of that incredible music.
The music is by Andrew Huang mostly on modular synthesiser if your interested in finding more check out Ann Annie, Alan dear, r beny, Emily Sprague & light bath all very relaxing modular artists
Making a pause by 2:03 to comment that the image of those tiny granules made me think of an article by Professor Bonnie Bassler about quorum sensing; she discovered that certain bacteria seem to use boron to trigger certain collective events; so I wonder if those granules, though not Boron, but Barium and Calcium Sulfate, may have a similar purpose ( quorum sensing)... now I'll watch the rest of it. Thanks a lot for this video!
These are so beautiful. Thank you for all your hard work!
I honestly enjoy this much more than any other educational content on youtube. Not that I particularly like micro organisms, but reminds me of discovery channel when I was a kid. You know before reality tv took over and such. Also hank, I enjoy your narration . Keep up the great work!
Those was days.
Hank, this is the best project you've done in years. The team you all have here is great, and this content is absolutely amazing. Keep it up!
We'll all be looking for those 1200x and 1600x magnification lens in the coming months!
This is very quickly becoming my favorite channel to watch on youtube. Keep it up!!!!
These videos make me feel so calm and happy. This was a bright spot in a bad day. Thank you.
That was SO COOL the little Loxodes running all over the place and then it turned and you could see how it's kind of flat and so it CURLED and that was just - aaaah!
Both amazing and cute :D :D
Truly hope you can keep up with this magnificent project! Blessings from Colombia
Hands down my fave channel right now. As a biology enthusiast, I literally shed a couple of happy tears every time I see that you uploaded a new video. Thank you so much. Do you have a patreon? I am willing to give you my money so that you can buy an electron microscope and give us some more crazy science videos
@Evi1M4chine I don't see it 🤔🤔
Jam and Germs is my JAM YO!
Journey to the microcosmos? YES PLEASE
It is egregious that there is no patreon for his channel, aseptically when I need to see them get a more power microscope.
Thank you Hank for pushing this channel, it is now one of my absolute favorites and I cant wait to see more for years to come!
I love this channel, one of the most fascinating interesting things I've watched keep these videos coming guys they're amazing
That final shot of the ciliate slowly rotating, revealing its 3D structure could win a micro videography competition! That’s a money shot, right there! It could only be better if it was an extremely popular or extremely mysterious organism.
I have just binged watched all of your videos.....totally amazed at the variety of species with all their complexities.....and yes....the water bear is still my favourite.....Love from Scotland🎇
These videos are gold! Please don't ever stop.
I could watch an hour long video about just one of these organisms and still be utterly fascinated.
i had a really shitty bad day and i am so greatful for this series, because now it's 3 am and i'm finally in bed and this video relaxed me so much. thank you!
That final shot was both exquisite and sublime. Incredible.
Quickly becoming my favorite channel
Time to dive in this magical world! Everything else must stop now.
@Redrum turn your life over to Satan.

@@a01252 turn your life over to me I got your satan
Just wait until we develop the technology necessary to peer the quantum world.
@Redrum No thanks. Been there. Done that. Christianity offered me nothing but false hope. It's also responsible for the current trend of anti-intellectualism; which starts with Creationism, Flat Earth, and Geocentrism.
I really can't get enough of this series at the moment! Please keep doing what you're doing; this needs to exist.
LOVE! 😍 To think people undermine how AMAZING it would be to find microscopic life on another planet 💚
if we would even recognize it as life
There may have been or there is micro cellular life on Mars within it's subsurface.
Crazy how we have gotten to the point that If we found a single cell organism on mars we would say there is life on other planets but a 9 month old baby in a mother's womb isn't life. Sad.

I look forward to these every week. Great work.
This channel is the most relaxing form of education I've every come across.
I can't believe every video here doesn't have millions of views. Every video is so brilliant and beautiful.
You people have no respect for a Paramecium's privacy.
It's OK, it's glad of the publicity - it's a reality TV paramecium. It really wants to tell us how tragic its life has been, how it is on a 'journey' how it is finding its gender identity, and it really, really wants to have sex with Tracy. Soon it will launch a perfume range and adopt a little orphaned African paramecium.
@@thisnicklldo -- LOL Don't encourage it.
These videos are so good, even though I've known about Hank and his many companies for 10 years, I suddenly feel like this is his main job. It brings together great video production, science education, and his signature humor like this is what he's meant to be doing all along. vlogbrothers, AART, SciShow, etc. just brought him here.
This is so beautiful. I’m glad I stumbled on this channel.
I love it. Every episode has me clicking faster than before and it all reminds me of my biology class, taking the microscopes out was always my favourite. Thanks for the series, the production is incredible and the way you handle the science is artfully done. I honestly just can't wait to get a half an hour version, maybe with clips of sample collection and maybe you guys can eventually get some real fancy lenses.
The channel whose content I look forward to!
I Can only say Thank You. Thank you for all these amazing images, this immersion, this way you guys have to reach out to us the watchers. It's an amazing job, and I'm glad to share it with everyone I know. Thank you
Hank, you do such an amazing job at narration. I'll bet you could narrate a video about penguin migration and make it interesting.
I get that those microorganisms are fighting it out and trying to eat each other. Yet this series is peaceful and almost meditative.
Teh hottest channel orbiting around the Sun. Proud to be one of the first subs.
This so good they should make all high school have a class on microorganism
6:03 is the most satisfying thing on this channel to date.
Each video I watch seems to get better and better. I've commented on the colors before, but they really are just getting better! Thank you James (and Hank). So much beauty.
Okay, I just gotta say, I've been loving these videos. It's been fascinating to learn about the microscopic world, and the writing and editing work so well with the chill atmosphere. Keep up the great work!
Best new channel on YT, by far!
My kitten is a new Microcosmos fan. He tried to catch the loxodes on my phone screen 😂
He's a budding microbiologist perhaps :)
Excellent video. Great way to relax and learn.
Amazing shot of a rotating ciliate at the end! What's that on its surface, looks like a hole that's sucking water in, what's going on there?
It's like the laser on the death star!
That's the cell mouth :)
That is contractile vacoule
Hank, this is by far your best series. I hope you and your team keep up the good work! The photography, narration and music are perfect.
What if the crystals there to sense heat?!
More heat=more light=more food production?
Nice hypothesis
I thought the same. Seems pretty logical, especially as it sits on the thinnest and clearest part of the cell. Maybe even some form of rudimentary light sensor relying on a physical instead of a chemical process.
@@theexchipmunk You would think someone might have thought of that and observed if it did anything different with various strengths of light shone on it. But hey, maybe not, yet, who knows?
I like that idea! I wonder how you'd test it?
I dunno. It seems to me more like it's a kind of "chewing" action meant to smash apart small but tough particles. Kind of like the grit in a bird's gizzard. Someone should apply SCIENCE!
Amazing how such a tiny place in our vast universe can bring me so many feelings of connections to all life. Thank you, Hank, for bringing us such an extraordinary YT channel.
It was just a matter of time before they resorted to salacious jiggling.
I’m so glad I’m still seeing your comments even on this series.
Andrew's music fits this series so beautifully
Do you know which one is it in the beginning
Why do cells always look flat? Like I know they are 3D but they’re always see through and I never see them turn to the other side
That fantastic shot at the end with the spinning cell reminded me of that video with the spinning seal. :)
Great video as alway guys. Looking forward to many more
Contractile vacuole - Man the bilge pumps!
I love this series so much. I watch each episode as soon as it comes out. It makes a very daunting, yet fascinating topic perfectly approachable!
The crystals bouncing around look like they are alive themselves. XD
Atoms have consciousness, there... i said it.
It would be really interesting to see some spin off videos detailing the equipment you use, and a little more on the people using them and taking the photography!
It's mentioned 1000x is about as good as we can do... I wonder: what prevents us from going smaller???
Is it technology in how precise we can craft lenses or perhaps we can't get enough light peering that deep into the microcosm? :) interested in that stuff.
Big thanks for this channel!
This time in the Microcosmos: "We squish this thing so it stops moving..."
I'm sure they tried asking nicely first (-:
Here’s hoping this channel gets 1 million subscribers. It definitely deserves it.
Does Hank lay on a bed to read these scripts? They did that for HAL 9000's voice actor, and I'm getting similar vibes here. Maybe he takes a huge hit before recording :D
I could sit and watch/listen your channel all day. These are so cool to see and I love it.
Notification squad :)
🙌
This is the most fascinating channel. I get so excited every time a new one is released. Thank you so much!
Could the barium and calcium sulfate in the tip the Closterium possibly be a sensory organ? The momentum of the barium and calcium sulfide could be felt at a somewhat constant rate by the Closterium, and when disturbed by some outside force, it could alert the Closterium? 🤔
Definitely my favorite show on youtube right now, loved it
Who, in every one of these videos, attempts to say the name of the organisms before Hank does just to see if you’ve pronounced it correctly?
This new channel of yours is wonderful!
Hank's sotthing voice, combined with the highly colourful visuals and the Progressive Electronic background music makes for and almost psychedelic experience!
Every time I watch an episode, I can hear some Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze playing in the background ;)
I really love this series. I could watch for hours. I think it might have become my new favorite Complexly creation. Thank you all for all you do
These videos are beautiful. My new favorite channel!
Absolutely amazing work! Being able to peer into the world of these micro lifeforms is incredible. I hope this channel keeps gaining traction so you can continue this. Thank you 👍
This is one of my favorite channels, only one I **have** to watch on a big screen.
Two suggestions.
1. Would be nice to smoothly transition directional jumps using digital pan (if the real frame is digitally zoomed) to make transitions less jarring.
2. Lay people may assume the '100x' is playback speed. May want to note at beginning or use zoom instead of x. I know speed ups are clearly marked when they rarely happen, but the average viewer would feel more connected/amazed knowing this is in real time.
Hope this inspires tons of new scientists! I expect several new scientific discoveries thanks to the impetus this has given some viewers :)
Yet another excellent video. Thanks Hank and thank the team behind these.
You folks are restoring my hope that we will get through these troubling times somehow with our sanity intact.
Why does this not have millions of views??!! This series is amazing...
Fantastic stuff guys! Thank you.
Thanks for producing those videos, it is so relaxing to watch!
I remember starting basic cell bio in science class back in 6th grade maybe? I’ll never forget the first comparisons between animal and plant cells and seeing diagrams of star-like crystals in the latter. At the time it was the coolest thing ever.
Nice closure. I admire your writer's craft.
This channel brings peace to my soul.
"And here we see Plasmodia bursting from human red blood cells. This emergence creates the symptoms we commonly associate with malaria." -Hank Green
