I have traveled EXTENSIVELY throughout the world alone, and many times on Greyhound alone. It's just common sense and basic safety measures: stay in the Greyhound station if you have a layover (do not go roaming around if you don't know the outside area), keep your cell phone charged, make sure that someone you know and trust is aware of your journey and where you are. Don't get all dolled up, like Tim is saying...I saw a young woman get harassed by every man on the bus (including the driver!) once, from Washington DC to southern Virginia, who was very pretty and dressed provocatively (not her fault, but I think looking dumpy attracts fewer creeps, lol). Just be smart!

I once was on the Greyhound bus back home from California to Florida and there was this girl in her 20s sitting next to this crazy guy in his 50s. he kept bugging her and offering her a bite of his sandwich OVER AND OVER again even though she kept telling him no. I was sitting in the seat next to them on the other side of the isle, and i made it VERY obvious that I was watching them and paying attention to them. I even tried talking to the crazy 50 year old guy to distract him so he'd leave her alone because she looked very annoyed and he straight up told me "You're Not a woman! why are you talking to me?"... i automatically knew he was up to no good then, but i didn't want to start drama or make a scene.... When we made a stop at the next station that same girl asked me to sit next to her so the crazy guy in his 50s couldn't so i did. It's so ignorant that there's people out there like that...
I've gone from Concord NH to Fayetteville NC 4 times, 2 down and 2 back. I felt super safe. I just made sure not to go out of some of the bus stations. I often kept to myself, but there were times I made conversation. I was nervous seeing as the first time it was my first time going by myself anywhere alone and on the bus. But it was easy!
I like what you come up with safety tips for all of us. I know when the MC-7s once ran in regular service, more people were well behaved. And I am glad that most bus drivers knows how to maintain order on the bus. Good guys like you is why I subscribe.
Bring a book even if you don't plan on doing much reading of it on your trip. If your seat mate starts yacking and you are not into it - start reading - stick your nose in that book even!
I'm ten and when I went on greyhound for 4 hours by myself and this guy was taking pictures of me and I said "I'm gonna punch you if you do that AGAIN I will punch you" and he didn't do it again
grace Christensen you should have had an adult go with you. You are entirely too young to be taking trips by yourself. You could have been in serious danger
That's disturbing. When I was 10 you couldn't take pictures unless you actually had a real camera. You couldn't just take pictures with a phone. Well I'm glad the guy stopped. And oh our society has been crazy it's just now more apparent
It worth mentioning that every large city I've witnessed you'll find taxi drivers sitting thier. So you know a tax will take you to your destination. And you're right during the day it might be okay to walk at like 2:00 in the afternoon. After dark you might want to take a taxi. Chicago for example I was around at 8:00pm this was November so it was already dark. Had it been summer of course it would still be daylight for another hour or so. So you have to factor in the time of year on that. Time after that November again. Yet it was around 12:30pm. So still daylight. I think many cities the case the day crowds and the night crowds are 2 totally different sets of people who will be around the bus station. 12:30 on a Thursday afternoon sure walk to burger King for lunch. 7:00 pm. Well if it's July maybe. If it's November maybe not
hi. im an 18 year old female looking to take a solo bus trip from wa to me. im very nervous about it, especially because im so small size-wise. i have common sense and know how to seem confident but im still worried about risks! i know as long as i stay inside the station i should be fine, but are there any extra safety tips someone could give me so i wont be so scared traveling especially for such a long distance?
The tricky think can be transfers as your bus may be late and you could miss the next bus. If there are multiple choices, take the first bus of the day so that if you miss a connection, you can catch the next one. A good idea is to have hotel and Uber/taxi fare in case you are stuck waiting at a station.
I did walk to the place where I was staying last time I took a Greyhound because I grew up in the town and I knew it would likely be safe at 12:30PM. But if you're in unfamiliar territory then don't do that
Also one other thing that I do is if the bus is jam packed is I look for an isle seat so that if someone tries to hurt me then I have an escape. I also call a cab hours ahead of time. If the bus is late then I call the cab to them know that the bus is late
Still watching your vids. May 6th is close at hand. I still haven't packed. SMH BTW my daughter gave me a little power pack just in case I need to charge phone along the way.
Hey Tim nice video man, I'm just throwing a idea out for u, and I know u said you wouldn't want to work with them but it would be dope to see the Frugal Travel Guru Driving the big dog Greyhound and wearing that cool uniform. you would be Rollin in style. Also it would be great for your videos to see what's it like working with Greyhound and all its adventures and places you get to go too. lol you might not want to but this could be the start of a new adventure not only for u but us as your fans, what else do you got to lose, but I'm just throwing that out there.
Absolutely yes. The tip that a solo female traveler should never do is never give private info to another traveler no matter how friendly they maybe. Just like you I have come across some jackasses on the bus.
Greyhound is abandoning its stations. So if you have to wait outside, and its dark, etc etc. then too bad for you. If you're elderly, too bad for you. If you have youngsters that require bathrooms a lot, too bad for you/them. If it's raining, freezing, killer heat (such as here in Redding Calif), too bad for you. The days of private sector full service accommodating of the public are now somehow neither doable nor profitable, as they were many decades ago..
jamie beasley, when you're traveling the question isn't so much whether to choose Greyhound over an airline as it is when to choose Greyhound over an airline. since both offer frequent and convenient service the choices is largely one of time vs money. on certain trips the plane saves you time but on most every trip Greyhound saves you money, spend your time saving money, Go Greyhound for the fares are more than fair.
I disagree with the whole getting to you're destination safely not only just tor women but for anyone... I was stranded outside a gas station in knoxville tn , ( Look it up) In the worst part of town where every gas station and anywhere safe closes at 10 or 11p.m... it was crazy. So I do not agree about getting safely or leaving safely from where you are!! 100% I was almost killed , Drug ppl tried to sell me things , gangs showed up... it was insane... I'm done with greyhound and I will never travel with them again , Unless it is an absolut emergency. Do as you wish though. P.s On the coach you are tho realtively safe

as women know, dressing up or dressing down doesn't make a difference to someone who is intent on harrassing you.
But you draw less attention to yourself if you are not dressed up or looking your best, that was the point. And that is true for men or women.

what about babies children?
Is it safer to take the bus or a plain
jamie beasley probably a plain it might be more expensive but you will get there faster
I would say a plane definitely because of the extra security you get on a plane. There is TSA and then air marshals. You get none of that on the bus.
