Thank you, Jeff for this important quickie about pollinators. They come in all shapes and sizes and are the most important part of a food garden. With all of the sprays being used that kill them, plus their natural food source being cemented over, they need all of the help we can give to them.
This year my husband finally realized the important of flowers. POLLINATORS. I now have a very nice new perennial garden. Win for the pollinators and a win for me. Thanks Jeff
I found a pollinator in my garden, last year, that surprised me. I had 2 gherkin pickle plants and wow, they were flat amazing. Those 2 little plants gave me quarts of pickles. We are still chowing on them. There were a few bees, not many. But, the hummingbirds LOVED those plants. I would stand there and watching them go from flower to flower. They never visited any other plants- that I saw. But, they loved those pickles. 😊
Bees love the perennial oriental poppies. I had a large patch of the orange ones and every year it was filled with honey bees. It looked like the whole hive from the neighbors came for the party. They were so busy you could walk among them and not get stung.
Hi Jeff, wow I didn't realize that 80% depend on pollination. I had to put netting cages around mine to keep the caterpillars, fruit flies, etc out. What do we do to help our plants? What can be grown indoors?
40% of our bees were affected by a parasite this year in Canada so that is a devastation for all. Haven't seen the butterflies here yet either. I don't know if it is from all this rain or not
I'm not far from the Canadian border myself. I'm pretty certain the rare freeze in TX last yr that killed swarms of honeybees hasn't helped the world as a whole. My daughter's in San Antonio which was just as frigid if not more so than Montana in Feb. of 2021.
I'm in N.Y and I left my clover on the lawn for weeks and hardly any honey bees. I see only some bumble bees. I might have to hand pollinate alot this year. Did have a few butterflies and really wanting to see some monarchs as i planted alot of milkweed this year.
I thought you were going to mention those non honey producing wild bees. You can make a home for them yourself or buy one. They are solitary bees. They do not live in big hives, but like life by themselves just like some people. Good luck my friend.
Do you mean the Mason bees?? I bought a home for them & 1 for butterflies. I don't know when to put them out in my region & can't do so myself due to a torn shoulder. I would like to hear about others experiences with them though. Cheers, ~ Covah
for some reason a lot of people in our area in Oklahoma have had almost no pollinators and it's really showing on our plants. we normally have a lot of butterflies, bees, wasps. but when spring came this year, the pollinators did not. it's been so strange. been having to self pollinate
I'm growing a variety of vegetables and fruits in my garden, but I mostly just see wasps, yellow jackets from the look of them, around mostly my sweet peppers, and jalapeno plants. Are these also pollinators or are they keeping my good pollinators such as bees and butterflies away? My zone is 8b, central Texas. Could it be the currently temperature which is 100 degree F right now in July and Aug will be hotter. Are some pollinators only around in cooler temperatures while others are more prolific? Thank you bunches for all the videos you've posted. It's helped a novice gardener like myself, learn that gardening is more of a science than anything. I LOVE gardening and hope I get to do it for as long as I live!
Another masterpiece, Jeff. Such a crime that bloodsuckers don't pollinate, we could feed the galaxy if they did! I'm wondering if you've ever watched this vlogger's channel. I joined today & he posted a pic of the mosquitoes worst kryptonite....the dragonfly. I'll link it in comments.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms My post courier just mentioned we've "only" 3 wks. of them here. I'm new to this region of MT so next year I'll need to be much better prepared. The flooding nearby likely made it 10x worse. I wish to query you on mason bee & butterfly houses....I bought both & have yet to hang them. Do you have any experience w/these contraptions?? Also, go see the brilliant pics of nature on the link I left in comments....nature, less bloodsuckers is the best medicine.
I have a neighbour who doesn't understand the power of flowers 🌺. Lots of veggies, few flowers, so it's up to me to keep piling in flowers. Next doors, they put up commercial wasp traps, elimination the wasps AND the bees 😡😡. Don't do this! Wasps are the main insects for FIGS, so now, zero figs. 😡 I have been encouraging birds to come in early in the morning, put the slug collection in a dish for them along with the lure of sunflower seeds.(raw and unsalted, ALWAYS). Sometimes city life sucks because of people who abhor bugs. 😭

Love it Erin! 🙂
Your garden is so amazing and full! 💕🇨🇦
I have an area of the yard that I plant clover in and don’t mow very often. Kinda a bee sanctuary. Every little bit helps. Good info Jeff. Thank you!
That's amazing Paulie....I wish more people did that! :-)

Its a disaster in the making Bonnie... 😞

QUESTION: Are ants solid pollinators or more destructive to the plant than beneficial?
Is their a chart of which plants need pollination?

what was the yellow flower at the beginning of the video please?
What would you say are the best "bee friendly" flowers to plant...
Am thinking of spreading some love around the garden!

We are so short of bees. I have bee friendly flowers everywhere but only a few bees 🐝 🐝
Are ants a pollinator?
