Had seen this before but wanted to see it again.I think Matt was glad to drive and not talk at the same time. Can't wait till the Goonzsquad to finish their's!
I have been waiting for this for so long. Excited to finally see it. I have follow DF since they came out, pretty much. Awesome to hear they did as well as I wanted them to do.
This video is what convinced me to build a Goblin and I couldn't be happier. Lonny and his son, Adam, are great to work with and I'm thrilled with my supercharged Goblin.
Would be interesting to hear a Suoercharged cobalt engine on this. Haha I know the turbo had more power but to have a go kart with a s/c whine would be fun
TheReal NateDogg if you want a supercharged go kart just look up the Ariel nomad or atom they both are supercharged. Although they are much more expensive
Eric Krieger that's the point this is more affordable, actually the Exocet Miata is more affordable than this kit but throw a supercharger on and it's still less than half the price for a atom...
Jordan Hillard curious as to if you get the V8 engine for the exocet and it weighing so little compared to a V8 muscle car, is the gas mileage significantly better on the exocet vs a regular muscle car due to weight?
The thing that makes this better then all the other videos is that the owner actually smiles! He's having fun, not just there looking fancy telling about how much he spent on the car.
This one is amazing to watch with Closed Captions on! - "bang bang the people water where that dance totally want to hear it and I don't we're gonna slow down let heaven see it through Hannah" .... My thoughts exactly.
what an amazing car and a tremendous job by the creator. seems like an awesome humble guy. definitely going to favorite the site and hopefully be able to afford something like this one-day
What a great little car! I like how that person pulled over for you. Props to them for knowing how to SHARE the road. I also liked that you gave them a little thank you wave. These little things take such little effort, but make everyone happier to SHARE that road with you. Well done to these guys for making something so different and interesting. I wish them all the best and hope they sell lots of them. Imagine how cool this thing would be if you built he motor and gave it some real boost. You'd have a damn quick little race car
Lonnie and his son definitely build some badass cars.we do their powder coating on all their kits and it's been fun to work with these guys and see all the frames and suspension setups they drop off.great guys and very talented.i will definitely be buying one from them in the near future.
Great video, as usual. The camera angle, that shows both the dashboard and the road, is just perfect. I think it would be really neat if you would use this type of angle for "normal" cars as well :)
Idk how you're not over 1m subs yet tbh. Seems like a lot of the automotive TH-camrs are leveling out at 700k. I can't imagine that's how big the community is. There has to be more people out there who just don't know.
Motoring Media every single automotive video made in youtube's history, from produced pieces to the shittiest vlogs and exhaust clips, make up only 4 percent of all videos on TH-cam.
So it looks like in order to break through that there has to be some other subject then? Because any automotive TH-camr I know that has another interest that they film (Adam LZ with BMX, Tanner Fox with scootering) breaks through that 700k barrier. Its a shame that content creators like you, Rob and David Patterson work hard to put out good content but seem to hit a bit of a wall around this level.
Matt you need to come to Canada and drive my buddies Chevette, before you all laugh this Chevette is a serious ass kicker, 3.8L V6 built as closely to a GNX engine as possible only a slightly bigger turbo backed by a built 200-R4 with 3:42 gears. He's upgraded all the suspension and brakes, had 16 inch rims with some sticky ass tires (can't remember what brand) frames been boxed and extra cross supports added in, full cage with a gorgeous custom built interior and finished off in Corvette grande sport blue. The amount of time and money in this thing he probably could have a Lamborghini lol but in all seriousness this Chevette is a friggin missile and corners like a go kart. Never in a million years would I have thought you could turn a Chevette into a true street beast.
Sticky ass tires with a i that be the black round rubber(ish) ones then .Not at the top of the list for these "chaps" playing in school playgrounds and empty car parks (parking lots) on Sunday mornings while the "little" woman gets on with the Sunday roast You Tube GYMKHANA'S EUROPEAN COUSIN THIS IS AUTO TESTING 2014 may even have time a quick pint of warm beer on the way home ! Petrol heads come in many many forms a good thing
I'm so glad you showed this! I was considering an Exocet, but already had a Miata and didn't want to do anything like that since it's my daily. Definitely gotta get one of these!
Jason Young - ehh, not so much. With no real weight up front, there's nothing that's really going to change that steering feel. Also, why would you overtire it that way? Personally I like being able to stop without locking the tires up... and basic physics is the 335IS on something that light our way, way too wide. Even for time attack type of work... **edited for spelling, because autocorrect is derp**
That's why Das Audi Auto Q7 was called ZE PANZER MK XXVII back at Ze Bunker when in early development after the team behind the A2 thing taken out and shot ,No one wanted a modern day Kattenkrad no matter how superior it may be .Nice come back with just the tool far a romp over Poland on the way to old mother Russia in the spring time Old habits die hard for the square of head
That thing needs to be thrown around some rural Missouri State highways. Super perfect two lane blacktop with certain death off each side working its way over small mountains through the woods.
The light and sketch front end feeling under power is very likely a bump steer issue...Should be easy to fix. You can also try raising the rear ride height 1/8-1/4" (or lowering the front)...This is likely to make it feel better. I would ditch the power brakes and go with a larger piston/higher effort for more feel. Wilwood has a 1 inch piston master cylinder with a remote mount reservoir option. Control creates confidence. Seems like a really nice package!
Cool car, Ariel Atom also comes to my mind. That's the way it has to be, lightweight car and the right power. It´s all about power to weight ratio. Great car, great video
If it's a stock LNF powertrain with the stock K04 turbo, then it's not a BOV - it's a BPV. Some guys add BOV to this engine and the MAF throws fits. If you want noise from an LNF then install a Forge BPV.
I'm planning on using a modified mazdaspeed miata. So around 220whp... I'm curious about the handling... Miata's handle pretty well.. Ariel atoms as well.. But u hear are pretty twitchy. Which is why I'd be curious to hear a quick comparison. As I like the idea of using an already factory turbod newer motor... My fiance pointed out that it looks quite a bit more cramped than the Exocet. Regardless, Matt(smoking tire) give us a quick comparison!! Pretty please
I mean there's quite a bit of difference. The Exocet while it can be easily turbod and make similar HP... It is based off a 20 year platform. Very balanced and known for handling. Where as this should be faster but built off of car parts. By someone that built their first "car".
Hey Matt, quick question....where did u get those sweet sweet shades? Also I noticed your smooth none sticky balls, Any product recommendations? And I noticed you were drinking some kind of coffee in one of your videos, where could I get a pound of those sweet sweet beans from? Oh and let me know if u ever get a podcast cause that would be dope!
Lots of TH-camrs are doing this now... mostly because TH-cam has removed most of the ads due to ads showing up under sketchy videos, so lots of the normal sponsors have taken off because it looked like they were sponsoring said sketchy videos.... So if the trade off is a few spoken ads, go for it! I got a FFWD button if I want to tune it out...
This car seems much better built and the little things are more well thought out than the Specter Motor Works kit car that Matt did. Such as the dish of the steering wheel and it also seems to drive better
God I've been wanting to so something like this with a mtx75/duratec combo in a tube frame sand rail for ages... or my Baja bug (then I'd have heat!). Awesome set up. Wonder what it would take to get good travel out of the fwd transaxle.
stupid question, but i thought it was required that cars have fenders for the tires? what kinds of things are needed for a car to be street legal? ( i know i could google it, but yolo)
Adam Hudak If I company produces less than a certain number of cars or qualifies as a kit car/replica it doesn't have to pass crash test ratings or follow most regulations. Think of konegsegegesgegsegeseg ( I'm guessing that's how you spell it) or those factory 5 race cars.
Depends on the state, some are more strict, some of the guys that register stuff like LoCost builds (Lotus 7 like builds) have to add fenders on the fronts that turn and some sort of fenders in the back typically a trailer like fender.
Yeah, regulations on custom or kit cars vary state-by-state ... and wildly vary at that. For instance, in Florida you can register almost anything that motivates under its own power... Rather loose regulations there compared to some place like say, California. Just Google up your own States requirements is the best answer for anybody asking or interested in the question above.
man, this looks fun. I'm going into the Navy in 2wks and I'll be a jet machinist... maybe when I'm out I'll be and to get a good paying job and have 20k to throw at something like this
Sergio Gonzalez haha, no. if I'm spending 20k on a car it's going to be actually fast and cool. a toy car with shit tons of money in the motor and a racing trans to handle it is a joke. if a Honda could make 650hp without my head gasket blowing, transmission destroying itself, or had a good interior, then maybe... but they fail at all that. for 20k, I'm honestly looking at an e90 335i big turbo set at 850whp (stock internals), maybe some 2jz swap with forged internals sit to 800whp, or an e90 330i with an ls6 swap with forged internals and a big turbo for around 900whp. I'm not playing around with high school toys. I've had all them and they are for kids learning to drive. the car in this video also fits into my wants because a simple tune and a gt28 turbo would make this thing a blast and a hand full on the track. I don't want to feel safe (I'm not that old yet), I want my car to try and kill me if I get too stupid
I don't know if Matt reads these, but I'll ask anyways - have you ever driven something that you felt was "the one"? Like, the car that suited you and felt so right that there was no mistake about it?
Thanks for the reply! I'm still searching for my "perfect" :D - so far the v8 fiero I built in highschool was my #1, it's been 20 years and I still haven't found something I liked as much :)
Cool vehicle. Much love for kit cars and the people who love cars so much that they want to leave their own little mark on the industry. Seems like it could use a front wing or some kind of aero to generate downforce in the front. But pretty sweet either way. Keep up the great work!
I would want fenders over the front wheels at least. It would also be pretty cool with stand alone engine management, even megasquirt and a motec style gauge. I bet they keep evolving this kit, its a nice start. I noticed the rear control arms and suspension, he kept the K frame from the FWD. I would love to see him CNC some actual A-arms and CNC uprights and make a legit rear suspension. Wouldn't cost too much more.
You have to be kinda crazy to drive this car on a curvy road with other cars around without ABS, airbags, and a helmet. That being said it looks like fun. In how many states is it street legal?
Shooting an open-wheel car with the over the shoulder camera angle gave a real sensation of speed. Cool car, great video!
Roy Kane Intelligent, worthwhile post to read and I AGREE!!! Great way to shoot a vehicle.
Yeah, what a weird camera angle that really does give this incredible sense of speed. That's far better then eye level!
and being able to see the speedometer lol
The power to weight on that thing is awesome. 260hp/1550 lbs is like having a 500 hp BRZ/FRS
The passenger has handlebars to cling on to in terror.
The Oh Shit bar!
Lawrence Sullivan sometimes also called a bitch bar
the break your teeth bar
It's called a Jesus bar. The passenger grabs hold of it and yells..... JESUS!!!..... JESUS!!!
Who is here because of the Goonzquad's new kit car project?
Jay Philly that's how I found out about these, haha
@@rollingrandy9041 It was the same thing for me.
Me! lol

Yeah, this particular turbo engine sounds like ass.
I'm in the process of building a S/C version of the Goblin now, Just about ready for a road test.
finally poor mans Atom. in my price range.
With a base Cobalt/G5 had for cheap, this car can be built out for under $10K! Could be fun.
the kit without the cobalt is over $10,000,were did you study math?
$9,600 but I believe the price has dropped since this uploaded.
Jordan Hillard curious as to if you get the V8 engine for the exocet and it weighing so little compared to a V8 muscle car, is the gas mileage significantly better on the exocet vs a regular muscle car due to weight?
Raul Ramirez Thats what I was wondering. And will it be able to put the power down?
The thing that makes this better then all the other videos is that the owner actually smiles! He's having fun, not just there looking fancy telling about how much he spent on the car.
i think itnis so sweet how the coolant goes through the frame. what a great idea.
I went down a test drove one a couple years back, these things are freaking awesome!!! They drive like they are on rails
Did you end up going back to buy a kit? If not did you choose another option?
Looks like an RC car
Looks like something I'd drive to work daily ;)
Lol it's a life size traxxas
I was just reading about these on GRM.
They look really cool with the full cage and no body cladding.
I'll buy one just to throw banana peels out of it while driving on a race track :))
you guys have been asking me about kit cars
idillit lmfao
idillit if there was a discount code for this kit you wouldn't be laughing then lol.

I'm so glad you showed this! I was considering an Exocet, but already had a Miata and didn't want to do anything like that since it's my daily. Definitely gotta get one of these!
can fix that light steering feel with wider rims and tires; 335s at all four corners!

Just finishing mine up, thanks for uploading this. Definitely the reason I found out about the Goblin!
How’s it been so far? I’m thinking about making one.... just scared to use a 157k mile cobalt engine
So.... how does it compare to other cars in this category? Exocet, Caterham, Stalker, etc.
OH YEEEAAAHH! Need to see this thing really opened up!
The Saturn Ion also was on the Delta plate form with the Cobalt.
definitely a car that'll put a smile on your face.
Matt, this or the turbo exocet you drove?
Fulviae I'd love to know as well.
I'm planning on using a modified mazdaspeed miata. So around 220whp... I'm curious about the handling...
Miata's handle pretty well.. Ariel atoms as well.. But u hear are pretty twitchy.

Fuck off.
Just an 20/30 sec interruption so Matt and his team can make some dough out of it, I can't see any problems with that.
Greg Blank: take a joke Homie. lol actually I don't mind the advertisements as long as we get that sweet sweet content.
Do you have a moment to talk about cigars?

Its like a Ariel Atom but more badass and zero fucks
...and half the price.
and 10x the work...
WhatFourTwo: No Where Near As Good As An Atom!!! This piece is shit is 300bhp short for a start! No F1 spec suspension! Not in the same league!
Trend Asset Management aaaaaaaaand here comes the hate. This is where a heated argument starts lol
*grabs popcorn*
Harvard Ford Lol.. Not at all bro.. The original conment is the catalyst 🙈👌😂😂😂😂
it looks like a caterham had a baby with an ariel atom hahaha cool car!!!
Where was this thing when I my Ion Redline had it's back end smashed in?!
Transmission on the Cobalt SS is great. GM used a Getrag 6 speed for it... Fantastic transmission
actually no it used a saab f35 5 speed though a kit for the Saab F40 is available in the aftermarket
Given how cheap used cobalts are this really isn't a bad deal. Cool car!
If it's possible I would love to see a Pembleton Super sport on this channel. Not sure if you can find them in the US though.
Sir,I salute your road manners
That is great! Someone thank them for coming all the way from texas
This car seems much better built and the little things are more well thought out than the Specter Motor Works kit car that Matt did. Such as the dish of the steering wheel and it also seems to drive better
maybe add a good front splitter or actual front wing to get the scary fast four-wheeler feeling out of the steering
@TheSmokingTire do you prefer this car or the exocet?
this camera angle is just perfect
Matt was smiling the whole time.
I’d really like to have one.
I saw that nasty looking RV in the background can't wait for that one take
Appreciate the engineering & passion of the build...however looks like it was penned by Matchbox.
Dan Ryan I think that is just because this is the promotional car.
Love to know how well it's balanced front to back.
Matt have you thought about getting some external mics? like ones you and your guest can wear on your collar?
D Motorsports yes I have. And then I decided against it. But with our upcoming marine series I may have no choice.
God I've been wanting to so something like this with a mtx75/duratec combo in a tube frame sand rail for ages... or my Baja bug (then I'd have heat!). Awesome set up. Wonder what it would take to get good travel out of the fwd transaxle.
That 488 👀
that black car at the end is a 458, not a 488
Nick McQuoid its a 488
the doesn't look like it but I could be wrong, we'll see in one of the new one takes
Nick McQuoid yeahh mate probably be tomorrow :)
+Jack Hackett Apparently it broke down during the shoot lol.
I only don't like that the rear springs are on ungussetted tabs sticking off a tube. But it looks easy to mod the design too. cool kit!
I'm sure some type of splitter on the front would tighten up the steering. Pretty damn cool I must say. Price is pretty reasonable.
the force is strong with this one.
wow. such an awesome little car!! looks like driving a classic roadster
stupid question, but i thought it was required that cars have fenders for the tires? what kinds of things are needed for a car to be street legal? ( i know i could google it, but yolo)

awesome kit car, like how used so much of the cobalt,
also saab 9-5 in the background :) 2:38
Those seats add some seriousness to the whole Goblin name.
What a cool car! I may have just found a "strictly for fun" car to put on my someday list.
The scenery is beautiful. Where is this??
I like it, I wanna see more. Maybe a shootout against an exocet and an ariel atom. Very cool
Thank you! This was good.
Now, in retrospect, would you please compare and contrast this car with the Ariel Atom? Thanks!
that same model steering wheel was on letti's red corvette on fate of the furious and Slaptrain currently has it.
Yes! No product pitch! Love the vids bro!
WOW such an awesome littel car !!! Looks like driving a classic roadster😮
The build itself is cool, I would be inclined to swap out he colbolt pads and roter for something a bit more track ready
looks like serious bang for your buck... Matt, i hope you buy one
I wish the subject of fender-less cars would have been addressed - which states require them, etc.
I would love one of those with the motor out of an evo and the brakes and such as well. That would be awesome.
Those upper strut mounts in the rear look dubious...
8:09 "I really like this, this is great fun"
so...the top rear shock mount is just a flat plate of steel?
Hasn't Matt driven an ariel atom yet? I was waiting for the comparison between the two.
Chris Sorreda I did drive one years ago when the Atom 2 came out, in the rain. Would love to have another go in a 3 or a Nomad
man, this looks fun. I'm going into the Navy in 2wks and I'll be a jet machinist... maybe when I'm out I'll be and to get a good paying job and have 20k to throw at something like this
You might cut off your fingers and give up on such passions in life.
Just build one yourself with the jet engine from a helicopter. You'll figure it out lol.
Teh RedSpade thank you in advance for your service to our country!
20k? buy a honda and boost it
Sergio Gonzalez haha, no. if I'm spending 20k on a car it's going to be actually fast and cool. a toy car with shit tons of money in the motor and a racing trans to handle it is a joke. if a Honda could make 650hp without my head gasket blowing, transmission destroying itself, or had a good interior, then maybe... but they fail at all that. for 20k, I'm honestly looking at an e90 335i big turbo set at 850whp (stock internals), maybe some 2jz swap with forged internals sit to 800whp, or an e90 330i with an ls6 swap with forged internals and a big turbo for around 900whp. the car in this video also fits into my wants because a simple tune and a gt28 turbo would make this thing a blast and a hand full on the track. I don't want to feel safe (I'm not that old yet), I want my car to try and kill me if I get too stupid
Do the passenger bicycle handlebars do any steering?
I don't know if Matt reads these, but I'll ask anyways - have you ever driven something that you felt was "the one"? Like, the car that suited you and felt so right that there was no mistake about it?
fierostetz yep. See last week's GT3 video for that. Or a bone stock Ferrari 488.
His son worked at the same place I did, so awesome to see it featured here on Smoking Tire. 👌🏻👌🏻
Andrew Kutac where'd we work together?
Andrew Kutac or are you talking about one of my brothers?
Am I the only one that thinks that rear LCA mount at 1:14 should be triangulated in the frame?
Just go to the hill country in West Texas and you'll get the same driving experience . For reference ,go to Enchanted Rock area.
is the check engine light permanently on (air bag removal, abs removal...)? is there an ebrake?
Is it LS SWAP possible? If so, I’ll build one this year for sure!
They have fenders available for an extra $450.
Cool video Matt that's one badass car
You have to be kinda crazy to drive this car on a curvy road with other cars around without ABS, airbags, and a helmet. That being said it looks like fun. In how many states is it street legal?
