So happy I found your channel! Love the "follow along" guide and you listing the manual page numbers! You take away a lot of initial anxiety/stress on making a character!
You can get them here: dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets --- Download the zipped folder. It has a bunch, but you'll want the form fillable DnD 5E character sheet.
One point worth making about the Wizard - Spell preparation. In play you need to pick a number of your known spells to be prepared, that is, available for casting. The total that can be prepared is Intelligence Modifier + Wizard Level, which in Drusillia's case will be 4 (Int mod 3 + Wizard level 1). So you would need to pick 4 of your 6 from your spellbook to actually have available for casting at any time. You can change the spells after a long rest. If you want to cast a spell that isn't prepared you can cast as a ritual, Spell Slots are used to cast prepared spells only, any spell in your book can be cast as a ritual without using up a spell slot.
Nice. Good to know. I knew I wasn't able to cast any spell from my book at will, but hadn't read the rules yet on exactly how many I'd be able to prepare, so that helps. Thanks, Vaughan.
A wizard can cast a spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and the wizard has the spell in her spellbook (prepared or not). Not many spells have the ritual tag. Ritual casting takes more time but does not consume a spell slot.
Great vid... Don't cheat yourself on your Spell Attack bonus. Should be +5... not +4. (Int mod +3 plus prof bonus +2). Thanks for posting! Looks like a very interesting PC to play!
I made a folk hero Smith Wizard. They were a humble Smith, a human, with light armor proficiency (variant heritage feat) that was making a set of light armor for an Old Wizard that was visiting the village. She had finished it, and was trying it on to verify that it was up to par when she heard screams, and she ran there. Wizard killing cyclopes, he gets taken down by an unseen final one, she takes it out, ultimately using the Wizards staff, that is magical and has a disintegrate effect when used by a potential or current magic user, it glows, she takes out monster, Wizard takes her as his apprentice. Bam, light armor wearing human Wizard, that smiths stuff. I made her for the story reasons, and cuz it was interesting.
Chalk, tarp, bedroll, torches, spelunking style gear(as cheap as possible) and food. Just my ideas with the left over cash. Tarp becomes a quick tent or place to put injured PC's to carry. Chalk for messages or trail marking. Oh, flint and steel. Don't know if you'll be a city adventure or in the wild but still good extras to have, I've found.
I am going to play my first campaign today I will use a premade character but I will make my own wizard class for the future with the help of your channel, thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks, its my first time building a character sheet in D&D 5e and i was completely lost.. im building a warlock XD just so you know.. but the few things i couldn't get my head around you managed to clear them up ^^
One thing I would change is flipping the con and dex scores because +1 AC or +1 or 2 HP the AC will help you more and gives you better attacks with that short sword. Also bring high elf you get one more cantrip for part of your class my suggestion is prestidigitation when used well it is a party saver and so fun. You know make your eyes glow during intimidation checks, putting out a camp fire in a night raid, or just to clean a bar room with an animated broom to get a free room at the inn.
also you may want to look into some more ritual spells it is the coolest part of 5E wizards Tence's floating disk is amazing for carrying loot comprehend language as well sense you can take 10 min and cast them anytime
I was thinking on creating a character but using a tip I was told, go against your race or abilities for a truly memorable class Evil cultist halfling paladin anyone? Hill dwarf warlock (or Mage) Is that a good idea to make a "memorable" class like those Again even an elven warrior something new and wierd should I try it?
Also I was going to try to DM a match with my family (mum and dad to start) but they know NOTHING on dnd or many games like this and I know some (thanks wasd) but I've never played OR DMd any tips?
Commentates Everything Memorable classes like that are fine. Whatever tickles your fancy. My advice for you if you're DMing for the first time would be to read the rules carefully and then don't get too stuck to them when playing. Be flexible and creative! And have fun!
Another errata to include in the description text: darts do 1d4 damage, not 1d6. Also, mentioning the +5 spell attack modifier errata could help people struggling to figure out how to do it.
Could anyone answer the following please : 1. Why do you have your survival skill to +3? your Wisdom modifier is only +1 2. How come are you using both the starting equipment from your history and also rolling for gold to buy additional equipment? Isn't it one or the other? Thanks in advance!
Good catch. Both errors! 1. I must have erroneously assumed I was proficient with survival. 2. This is something I often did early on, but you are correct. You get starting equipment OR roll for gold to buy your equipment. Not both. My updated character creation videos are most accurate! th-cam.com/video/2hbKHMYSfZU/w-d-xo.html
Hi Nate, Was the 8 in the DC Save from your hit points? How did you calculate Armor class? You mentioned 10 plus Proficiency bonus. Where did the 10 come from? Also where did the 10 in the passive wisdom come from? Thanks, Josh
I feel that 5E is much more combat friendly to all classes. My first character was a Wizard in AD&D. This is when we did not have cantrips at all and you got 2 first level spells at first level the DM and experienced party helped me make it I quickly learn to buy a sling staff in the next town and I was so glad I did not listen to them when I put my 18 in dex.
That is something nice about 5E. Wizards aren't gimped and forced to get in their with their dagger or staff. They can keep using magic. I have heard some who don't like it, but I think it's cool.
You also missed that the wizard comes with free starting equipment. Also, an arcane focus is functionally identical to a component pouch so there is no need for both.
Actually you only get that starting equipment if you don't roll for gold and buy your own stuff. This is what I did, which means I don't get that starting equipment. I actually made the mistake of taking the equipment from my background here (and in most of my videos). I recently learned I shouldn't take that stuff either - if rolling for gold and doing my own shopping.
+WASD20 Idk man, I think they are wrong on that, if you add the gold you average on a roll for gold, that only covers the class gold, background gold and items is extra. you take background stuff and class stuff, or background stuff and gold.
Just wondering.. With skills that are not proficient, do you just add the Ability modifier? And with skills that are proficient, you add the Ability mod + the Proficiency bonus?
+Jose Fortun -- Yeah sorry. Not sure why I skipped over that! I explain it better in most of my other ones, but they are in the first part of the book (character creation), OR you can just take your ability score, subtract ten, then divide that number by two. Always round down. Example: If an ability score is 15, we subtract 10 and are left with 5. We divide by two and get 2.5, then round down to 2. Therefore an ability score of 15, has a +2 modifier.
Hey, I thought that when you chose to use your class+background equipment you didn't roll for gold? Or is there something I don't understand about wizards?
+RPG Havok -- Nope you are definitely correct. I messed that up in my first few videos and was taking the background equipment as well as rolling for gold.
I don't get how you know 6 level spells. In the chart in the book it says 3 cantrips + 2 spellslots at level 1, but it doesn't mention the spell you know?
Bryan Westerveld read further in the wizard section, under spellcasting. It says you know 6 spells but that you can only prepare 3+your wizard level. 1 so you can prepare 4.
My issue is making a caster in general. I can do classes that are a mix of fighter and what not but going straight caster is something of a challenge because i feel ineffective at everything
Hey man, great video! I was wondering, where do you get the modifiable character sheet? The only one i could find was in PDF format, and i can't edit that one.
Teodor Cristian Badea If you click on the Fifth Edition character sheets here: dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets you'll see a form fillable version in the zip folder.
WASD20 Oh, thanks very much, i really didn't notice those. Thanks again! I'm just starting my journey into D&D land and it's a bit much to get used to in a short time, so i'm a bit overwhelmed with the quantity and quality of this universe.
Teodor Cristian Badea No worries. I was in your shoes not too long ago. You might find this helpful - www.wasd20.net/resources/beginners-guide-to-dd-5th-edition/
+gatorgoat0339 Do you have the Player's Handbook? If so, they are on page 12. Probably close to that in the free basic rules PDF too. OR - cool trick - subtract 10 from your ability score and then dived the result by 2. Always round down.
+Jason Sharp -- For the fighter, one of the archetypes is a Eldritch Knight. They slowly start getting spells, but I think it's not til 3rd level. A Warlock built for fighting as well as magic would also be a good option.
Well in that case, just download the free basic rules! :) They don't have every race/clase but they do have human. dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules

You would probably benefit from watching my videos on how magic works. :) th-cam.com/video/hTl_4unUc64/w-d-xo.html But to summarize, I get 6 first level spells, and in any given day I can use 2 of them. would be 100% easier if I downloaded the basic rules to switch thru on the computers just a pain iv never played D&D I'm 100% interested any fun basic adventures you suggest?
The problem is I'm trying to learn it all because I legit have no where to play and not one card shop nothing around where I live so I gotta kinda learn it from scratch. Anywhere I can play online with people if I played a few games I'm sure it would be much easier to learn lol.
I'd recommend heading over to the Absolute Tabletop group on Facebook. Lots of people willing to run games there. Also, check out roll20.net Their forums are a great place to link up with people who want to play games together. You are correct that it is way easier when you've played a game. It starts to click. You can get them here: dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/character_sheets --- Download the zipped folder. It has a bunch, but you'll want the form fillable DnD 5E character sheet.

My pleasure, its handy for all those utility effects that can be so valuable outside combat.
A wizard can cast a spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and the wizard has the spell in her spellbook (prepared or not). Not many spells have the ritual tag. Ritual casting takes more time but does not consume a spell slot.
Good point, thanks for the correction.
Great video Nate. I've only made 1 Wizard so far. These videos are really inspiring. Makes me want to create more characters.
Thanks, Juce!
Thankfully this answer a lot of the small questions I had about making a wizard, thanks!

Really nice video! Thaks man, I'm creating my first Wizard character and I'm super excited to play with him
I’m here from 2024 I love this series, really helps me as a beginner player and DM
Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet or not. But when making a high elf you also get a bonus cantrip. :P you'd have 4 not 3. :D
Top o' page 24 for your reference Int is your ability for the spell; HOW CONVENIENT!
Tobiasblane Good catch, thanks. No one pointed that out yet. I can't do a character creation video without messing up at least one thing :)
Totally that's one of the best perks of High Elf life!
You also learn a new language for being a high elf

Loved Cabin Boy, btw.
Wizards are a lot of fun in 5E. I rarely enjoyed playing arcane casters in previous editions, but they're a lot less finicky now.
You here? What a surprise (Sarcasm not included)
Subscribed to your channel a few time ago, really like your work
Bye!
I finally got FireBall
You sir, have a glorious channel name
Why thank you. Yours ain't bad either. :D
Hey I'm new to d and d. I have the players handbook and esstinal kit. I have one question. How to modifiers work and how do you know what they Are?

@@WASD20 Thanks for the answer! Great video
My only suggestion would be a potion of cure light wounds. Just to be safe with low hit points and all.
Hi Nate, Was the 8 in the DC Save from your hit points?
How did you calculate Armor class? You mentioned 10 plus Proficiency bonus. Where did the 10 come from? Also where did the 10 in the passive wisdom come from?

I believe the 10's are constant values that don't change
I feel that 5E is much more combat friendly to all classes. My first character was a Wizard in AD&D. i do not have the players handbook so i dont know how to know the rules of magic
Should always take a blunt weapon in case of skeletal undead. :) Spend the other 45 on spell components?
I'm pretty much player creation stupid can you make a quick video on how to create a 5E Changeling Wizard Sage?
You didn't explain how you got any of those number @10:52, but I think I figured it out.
How did he get +3 in survival?
Just wondering.. With skills that are not proficient, do you just add the Ability modifier?

See the link in my response to Ralek :)
Thanks!
Helpful, but you skipped right over spellcasting ability, spell save dc and spell attack bonus on the spell sheet.
why plus 2 to strength?
Because of your elven heritage I would suggest a longbow, in the long run it is cheaper then darts.
Oh cool. Thanks for the suggestion.

Could you try and do a Summoner at some point as i really want to try and play that type? :)
what do you mean you rolled for thoes traits and flaws? where do you find that?

So to get my ability scores i need to do 46 drop the lowest?
Aidan McEvoy 4d6 -- I explain it a little better and demonstrate here: th-cam.com/video/aa5a3HfFOMc/w-d-xo.htmlm2s
What site are you using to make the Wizard
I made a video on this, but to summarize - Foxit Reader. Allows you to pdit PDFs. th-cam.com/video/GiUh-YSxdcI/w-d-xo.html
What software is this!?
I usually use Foxit Reader for editing PDFs if that's what you are asking. The PDFs have to be form fillable.
Thanks dude, I've been trying to get into DnD recently and im really struggling to understand how lvling works and traits etc
What is the name of the PDF. I have got a zip of like 8 of them, but none of them look right...
+FailGame -- Just make sure it's one of the form fillable sheets. Maybe form fillable complete 3 pages? I think that's the one.
Ok thanks!
What is a component poruch for??
If you look at material components for each of your spells, the pouch holds those. Alternatively one could use a spell focus (staff or wand).
Thanks your the only DnD ytber that replies to comments :D
What are you editing the pdf with?
How would you create a battle mage?
+Jason Sharp -- For the fighter, one of the archetypes is a Eldritch Knight. They slowly start getting spells, but I think it's not til 3rd level. A Warlock built for fighting as well as magic would also be a good option.
what dice do i need for character creation
Aidan McEvoy Most people do 4 six-sided dice and drop the lowest for 5th edition. There are online dice rollers if you don't have dice as well.
When I saw wasd 20 I clicked.
What chapter is the trinket in (i hope i spelled that right :P
Aidan McEvoy Don't have my PHB with me, but I'm pretty sure it's chapter 5 because that's the equipment chapter.
Do humans have no inherent traits?
+cammo353 -- Not quite sure what you mean by that. Page 31 of the PHB has a section called 'human traits'.
WASD20 Ah, I don't currently own a PHB and am relying on facebook groups and youtube comments for info :P
Well in that case, just download the free basic rules! :) They don't have every race/clase but they do have human. dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules
In my opinion every noble should have a family name. Nobles are usually proud about their family name.
How come you chose 6 spells but you could only use two?
+galaxxy09 Nevermind, i found out that if you have a spellbook you are able to know 6 x 1 lvl spells.
Wild Magic Sorceror?
Actually editing a video on the Sorcerer right now. It's a Draconic bloodline sorcerer though. Should be posted today or tomorrow.
cool creation but you don't get gold everything else it's or, such as spell book...
you didnt take your cantrip for being a high elf and i think you get a language too
