    This is the third video in a series where I refashion and old, failed Regency-era costume into something new. This time the dress will actually remain as a dress but I'm giving it a glow-up: new sleeves, a fuller skirt, and a much needed fix to an ill-fitting back. I'm also finishing up an old unfinished project to go with it: a pink silk bodiced petticoat.

    Those wrist ruffles are divine! And I love how the dress looks…but agree that having to pull at the bust because it keeps riding up would drive me nuts. I also love the soft pink that happens when the white translucent fabric is over the petticoat

      Thank you! Yeah, I’m sure I’ll revisit the dress sometime in the future and tackle that front

    I love that you show your daughter stopping you. My daughter also does this while I’m sewing. It’s a normal part of sewing if you are a mother!

    What a great idea to fix the back! I love the look of the gathered back. And yes, UFOs with no notes are the worst! You never know if you put it down because something wasn't working or because you got distracted. A tip for sewing with kiddos, sew after bedtime if you can. (I'm a night owl so this worked really well for me.) Now that my kiddos are a little older I sew standing at my kitchen island which is a higher surface so my youngest can't easily reach up and grab stuff. Congrats on your sponsorship!

      @DixieDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      omg by the time this kiddo is in bed I'm usually so tired I rarely sew. Sometimes I film intros/narration after she goes to bed so I guess still do something costume-related. My cutting table in my sewing room is counter height so she can't reach it unless she's standing on my chair -- which, of course, she's figured that out now, too lol. Thank you so much :)

    Great video! Your first video of this dress was the one who got me to totally dismantle my own regency dress and re-make it. So seeing you fix yours too really made me excited that all of us have things to fix up.
    Also - child pick up! child spilling pins on the floor and coloring on my sewing table!
    Are you living an identical life on the other side of the planet??

    If you have a scrap of the pink fabric you should do a test wash. Many silks are actually washable if you are careful. Hand wash, put it in the dryer but don't let it get all the way dry, press thoroughly, you may find you can wash that one or that that fabric doesn't tolerate it

      Or you can wrap the garment up in a very large terry towel, burrito style, and leave to soak out for 30 min to an hour; then hang to dry.

      I’ve been known to machine wash silk charmeuse in the washing machine before. It’s doable but it changes the texture of the silk. Maybe I’ll try one of the less… aggressive methods mentioned in this thread. Thanks 😉

    I LOVE the pink petticoat! So pretty under the white gown!

    The revised dress and the petticoat are absolutely lovely. Well done. I say fix the bodice at a later point - it will be worth it.
    Congratulation on your first sponsorship! Well done. Small hint from somebody who used to do press relations back in the day of paper and fax machines - pin a note up in your comment section as well as the video description. That way you have people literally tripping over the link.
    From now on, if I'm doing a thing that's turning into a UFO, or I've just finished a project - I'm gonna write up a page of notes to include in the pattern package (what worked, what to change, where I was in the process before giving up all hope and turning to the chocolate of consolation).

    Absolutely lovely!! I think I have that same silk charmeuse that I bought for the same purpose. We can be twinsies!
    I bet lengthening the shoulder strap would solve your underbust issue, but then you would need to reset the sleeves and that’s just a gigantic pain. I love your drawstring solution in the back though. So clever!

    • @DixieDIY
      @DixieDIY  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man you’re right! I could probably just cut a longer shoulder piece (currently the shoulder and front bodice are one piece). That would also help the fact that the should strap is quite narrow. I don’t see any way of fixing the front without resewing at least part of the sleeve, tho.

    • @petapendlebury9024
      @petapendlebury9024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thoughts exactly as it does look as if the front bodice depth is about the same on both dress and petticoat but the petticoat waist is definitely a tad lower. The only other thing would to be to put an extension piece on the bottom of the front piece to gain a bit more seam allowance but your fabric may be too delicate to expose a previous seam line? Or you may have trimmed that seam so there's nowhere to go! I guess you could make it a design detail.

    I love the pink petticoat under the sheer white dress! I have a ufo in the naughty corner, the sleeves are too puffy but I've already redone them twice and I just can't bring myself to redo them a third time. I don't love the dress enough and more effort on it would be a sunk cost fallacy lol.

      Thanks! I don’t have any more historical ufos but I have a ton of moderns ufos, many of which have had similar histories as yours. We don’t talk about those projects… 🫣

    Nothing worse than having to completely disassemble a whole dress to fix a mistake! Good for you for tackling that 🤣 I have a corset I need to do that to and I'm dreaaaaaading it.
    But all the modifications turned out great! Love the ruffly sleeve cuffs.

    That petticoat looks great. I have the pattern but have never seen an example of a white dress over a coloured petticoat on anyone real (other than Anya Taylor-Joy who was dressed by pros). The dress looks great now too.

    Much sympathy on the frustrating bustling. But all praise to persistence despite many challenges, of both the fabric and human variety. Clearly she is showing early crafting tendencies.

    "Not historically accurate" always makes me laugh. My great-Grandma and my Grandma were seamstresses, and were of the firm belief you did what looked right and worked. I think we forget that at one point, they were just like us, getting it finished and looking ok. If someone had a quicker or less fiddly way of doing things, even if it went against the norm, they'd have done that. I over sew everything, I've only just started doing backstitch. both grandma and her mother oversewed for most handsewing when everything was backstitched because they found that to be faster, they could get clothes out faster, which mattered for GG when she was left a widow with three under fives. So I learned to oversew as my basic stitch.
    When folk see some of my GG's clothes, they aren't historically accurate to the Edwardian period, but they're contemporarilly accurate to the Edwardian period. People have always done what works, even if it wasn't common to the time.
    My Grandma always used to say, "You can be perfect, or you can be paid."
    I miss her.
