- Modifieds at Stafford Motor Speedway, one of the great combinations. If this is foreign to you (I know it is for a lot of you!) its a really awesome type of racing, and one I am fortunate enough to see in person 5+ times a year. I've said in the past that I think iRacing has the best AI, but it wasn't until the last couple of weeks that I really sunk my teeth in and played with every setting to see how it works. I am happy to say it works really really well... mostly.
I hope they continue to refine this, because its some of the best offline racing there is!
For this video I ran the 'Tour' Modifieds at Stafford with 40 custom AI. The AI 'spread' was set to 50 - 106%
Driver ratings were as follows:
Skill: 98 - 65 (most over 75)
Optimism: all '1'
Smooth: all '1'
Age: all '28'
Aggression: 65 - 80

iRacing having the best AI in any modern sim is a bizarre reality. I hope someday they offer some kind of offline mode or bring their proposed standalone games to PC so more people can enjoy the work they’ve put in to make these AI this fantastic.
I'm European with absolutely zero exposure to this type of racing. It was video games (mainly NR2003) and early TH-cam POV onboard videos of dirt and tarmac oval racing that raised my interest for oval racing. Now I love it!
Early GPLaps videos played a major role in that.

Its not that they dont get attention. Its just not a great official car because of the hitboxes and gatekeeping in the community. Its a great league and AI car.
It's a shame that iRacing has such a monopoly on oval racing. It's good, but brutally expensive and not without its issues. I'd like to see a dedicated sim that really gives ovals the attention they deserve, especially on dirt.
The cost is the only reason I don’t play. I think they would grow more if they made it cheaper more= people play= more long term growth

Then try Automobilista 2. It had some pretty cool ovals via DLC

These 'cars' do indeed look ridiculous, regardless of what you feel in your pants and/or chest.
How can anyone not like modifieds? As an Englander I grew up with dirt track speedway (motorbikes) and quarter mile hotrods, and my favourite NASCAR race is Bristol. Short track racing is the best. Great view. Cheap seats. Tight racing. Little downtime. Fantastic.
I've been messing with the modified AI a bit the last couple weeks, too. Made a similar roster but really struggled to get them to race me as aggressive as I would expect from watching (probably hundreds of) races at stafford and Thompson. I know iracing doesn't really want to encourage car contact but I want the ai to bump and rub and dive bomb. Currently it seems like I could hold a car off that's 1 second a lap faster than me because it just won't be aggressive enough.
Still enjoying the hell out of it, been dreaming of modified AI since they announced they would start rolling out AI... just need lights at stafford now :D
Short track ovals really show you the techniques of racing. The slow in fast out ethos can be seen clearly when the lap is less than 20 seconds. You can quickly see how lap time is affected by scrubbing speed off due to understeer or oversteer, and how smooth inputs improve the lap time. I recommend short track racing to those starting out or even to those frustrated by slow laps in comparison to others. When I was iracing I was surprised how much I liked the Legends cars on the short tracks.

DTR@ was the best off line (and online) oval sim ever. Unfortunately Windows 10 broke the online part of the game. Great AI.

I know next to zero about cars and racing. However, I do know that in video games they are absolutely fun. You are an absolute monster of racing knowledge, but more than that you really have an earnest approach that makes me pay attention and learn a little bit. So, I guess I’m saying “Thanks”

So enjoy all of your content and that you celebrate the fun of so many things. And you Appreciate the Iracing AI, which is so under used and so underrated.
offline iracing should be free change my mind. it's ridiculous how you could have paid thousands of dollars and then as soon as you drop your sub you don't get jack shit. offline isn't a " service " the competitive 24/7 skill based lobbies are.
This looks great but the idea of buying cars and tracks at their prices plus keeping a monthly subscription to race AI just doesn't work for me.
If they just dropped the subscription requirements for AI only racing, I would buy cars and tracks.
I grew up with the local modifieds in my town. So really cool to see you do a video on the Nascar ones.
I was introduced to modifieds back in the days of Project Torque! To this day it's the most fun I've ever had racing ovals and that's coming from someone who doesn't usually enjoy them.
Feels wonderful and a bit nostalgic to see them again!
Imagine if iR offered an offline game with all the content and AI for like $150. No online required and you only pay to race online. They'd probably make truckloads of money. Imagine it also releasing on PS5/SX as well. Maybe even utilizing PSVR2?
Unfortunately, the devs are way too greedy for that and will try to squeeze every last dollar from a 14-yr old game.

Unpopular Opinion: Honestly, You should be able to use the AI without having a subscription.
Love to see you oval racing, you give it the right amount of respect while keeping it real and entertaining.
Hell yea! Whenever I get tired of sim racing you post a video that gives me that kick to keep racing. Love the short track stuff would like to see more, maybe some late models or SML.

Awesome it’s good to see Stafford in a video game.
I used to love watching the modifieds when they raced at New Hampshire, watching them get 3-4 wide on the main straight, they truly are the greatest show on asphalt.
You know if Supermodifieds are gonna be added eventually? I love seeing all these race series with not much media love.
I wish man and Oswego. I've asked this question and ppl told me they wanted to add Oswego and the speedway said they would only license the track if iracing added supermodifeds. Iracing said no, that was a mistake on iracings part honestly and disrespectful in my opinion.
Thanks for doing this. I grew up in Indy so I'm pretty much a 1950's-60's Indy 500 geek. But there's a 5/8 mile asphalt oval at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Years ago, the Speed channel (remember them?) had a Thursday Night Thunder from IRP. I can remember watching a very young and very fast Jeff Gordon run there. The feel of the exhaust of those V8's pounding on your chest and the smell of rubber are unforgettable.
I'd love to race iRacing more but crapnet is always the issue. Hopefully they'll eventually just have an offline version to play. Then it's my time to shine.

Here in the south, this was the most pure racing. Drivers and crew chiefs who built the car out of junkyard parts. All involved had day jobs and raced for pure enjoyment! Local boys putting the rightfoot down!
These modified are more rad in the dirt! Not to mention that iracing and motorsport games have just released a console version of the modifieds.
I love racing the a.i., I still need to try out these cars since they were enabled. Issue I run into with the a.i. is they don't always protect the bottom enough but probably some more settings I need to tweak, same with making them consistent track to track. But overall a really fun experience.
I’ve started doing AI racing recently too. It’s great. I can run a full field whenever I want. I wanted to do Cup racing and the online races had nobody show up. Hard to tune a car if there’s nobody to compare to.
Messing with all the settings is really fun. I tend to run near the 50% guys. I like to run timed races and go to tracks they’d never go to. I did a 15 minute cup race at Imola last week.
They are remarkably adaptable machines, they take well to almost any circuit that fits their size and they're a lot of fun to drive anywhere.
iRacing as the best AI of all sims, its not even close
I was skeptical about iRacing primarily because I was still pissed they were the reason I lost a job with Papyrus back in 2005. But that was a long time ago. And seeing how successful it became made me curious. So yeah I have it on my Steam wishlist, but still hesitant. I thought it was online only. I was thinking "surely they have to have some sort of offline practice, right?" I had no idea you could do offline racing until I saw this. Maybe I'll give it a shot.....

I actually have been using iRacing exclusively for AI racing because it's so much better than anything else out there. I do wish for the driver parameters they had something more like AMS2 where you can directly set what you're really interested in (e.g. how often they make mistakes) vs. having to get at it indirectly by adjusting a combination of age, smoothness, and optimism

Hell yea thier Kool..they race modifieds at my home track.. Anderson Speedway..theres a series even kooler than this ...IOFS Outlaw Figure 8..they look similar to these but there figure 8 racecars
I know short tracks don't sell great on iRacing but there are dedicated fans of the touring mods who would love to see more short tracks, particularly at least one of the New Hampshire bullrings (Monadnock, Star, Claremont, Hudson) that are mod staples. I've heard they scanned Slinger Speedway, which will probably be fun for both the touring and SK mod.

I actually got on Lorain county speedway. 3/8th mile short track. Just a Ford Fusion. Didn't go too fast. It was nice to run it for 3 laps. The didn't call the police on me. I went to Sandusky Speedway after. They wouldn't let me on the track. But the guy was nice to talk too. Arigato Gozaimasu Sensei.
I'm lucky enough to live about 20 minutes away from the track. Friday night racing always ends up being a good part of my schedule
I would love if they would offer an offline only mode, call it a-Iracing. Just drop the subscription requirement for it. It would definitely suck me in to spend money.
A bit off topic but as I don't have english as my native language I often wondered about the "Drivers start your engines" command. Shouldn't it be Drivers start your engine? I mean how many racecars have more than one engine.

I was lucky enough to grow up near a paved 1/8 mile oval and had friends race there. I spent lots of time watching cars just like these, and lots of other cool series as well. My grandpa sponsored a young driver and race team who ended up being quite successful and moving on from the local track. He won rookie of the year and second place overall his first year, and finushed first place overall the following year. They sold the car (big boat Lemans) to a friend of mine who also had some success with it, went on to build one beauty Monte Carlo tribute car and raced it for the next couple years, and now he works in a custom fab / race shop building some beautiful machines and hot rods.
does the ai comes with pre standard paint schemes or can we customize their looks? ok, you've answered my question during the video hahahaha, well maybe it is time for me to get into iracing them
I wish this type of racing was a thing here… there’s some oval racing, but nothing like this..
I love the mods. Being from germany I rarely get to race them online sadly but whenever I do, it's a great time. You can usually catch a race every evening and the lobbies are always clean. Great fun!

Was at the SRX race at stafford. Modified race was the opener. So cool to see the on track experience vs what I saw as a fan.

Looking like the reincarnation of Richie Evans himself out there!!! The RoC modifieds are probably the 2nd tier of modified racing in the North East...And modifieds are the 2nd best short track pavement car one could watch...SuperModifieds, the last remnants of the old Indy roadsters, are about as good as it gets on pavement...Do they have a version of Thompson and Oswego Speedway's for this??
I grew up going to Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC every Friday. It’s easy to fall in love with these cars!
I had no idea that the AI was so good in iRacing. I guess I always think of it as an online multiplayer game only. Maybe I should look into it more 🤔

I live for the day the dirt tracks get AI so I can run Sprint Car races with all of the Pennsylvania drivers I've grown up watching every week.
I cannot wait for AI on dirt, thats where i could see myself digging a lot of time back into iRacing again. One of my more favorite cars is the non wing sprint car, and I have barely ran any races with it due to the lack of drivers. Hopefully with AI it can bring life into these dead series again.
The nascar whelen modified tour is the oldest series nascar sanctions. It started one year before the strictly stock series which became the cup series

From being across the pond these cars are the best looking on ovals, the other series just look odd with the massive aero kits.

Yeah, I did like how nr2003 you go into the track ini file and change how the ai race. You could change how close they race each other, you could make a race real clean or a real crash fest

Nice video. This looks like a ton of fun to drive, but for viewing, after a couple of minutes it starts to get routine. Are there longer tracks that might make the competition a bit more varied? Thanks for showing us new forms of racing sims!
Most iracing tracks are available for AI. If you like road racing, Spa, Road America, and the Nordschleife are all options. Many different cars are available too. Not F1 but F3 and Indycar are options. I did F3 at North Wilkesboro once and it was a disaster.
Nascar whelen modifieds and Sk modifieds are some of the best racing in the sim honestly. So much fun

I am using the JJ spotter pack! I’m not from CT but I drive down a few times a year to Thompson, Stafford, Seekonk, Waterford, whereever there is good racing!
