    You can tell this “copying stuff from others” worked perfectly for Flume, because his sound is so recognizable yet unique. He doesn’t sound like anything else. I remember listening to his debut album for the first time, and being like… “What is this? Some kind of dubstep, wonky, grime, future garage?”. He sounded like all of that combined, but like nothing else I’ve heard before. I even remember seeing him tagged as trip hop in some websites, lol. In summary, he’s pioneer and the creator of a sound and style.

      He’s 100% worth checking out. Hes got a super unique and distinct sound. Hi This Is Flume is a record I definitely recommend to listen to first. His latest album he dropped is good also but its a little more on the commercial side (which isnt a bad thing) HTIF record is just a little more raw and unscripted (and also menacing af🔥)

    1:16. Yee. I legit learned how to copy flume for a few months just to apply it to dubstep. So far, it’s kinda trippy. Like, you expect neuro sounds for fills and stuff. Meanwhile I’m slapping in like alien sword clinks and Tom fills with so much distortion, it sounds like the track got hit by a car for a second….honestly the ladder is the sickest thing ever. It’s on like say it or whatever. It’s so insane sounding to have a really melodic and wet track, and to cut everything to silence for a fill of a crunchy chaotic, atonal ass “badabumchickabum” for a second. And, if anything, ripping off flumes sound for a bit has taught me how to apply contrast to justify anything. And how to make organic ass sounds. My sound design prior to this was very au5. So tuned comb filters, band rejects. Clean wave tables. Pretty much, “entering lightspeed” style fills. Flumes sounds are more like “I found this under a rock, in the forest, covered in ants and bugs. Isn’t it neat?” Fuck, I rely on analogies too much. Uuh. So usually, his sounds are basic sounds but, processed environmentally. So he’ll put a simple sin pluck and some noise into a room ( a shit ton of reverb) and make is aggressive (distortion and down sampling). Than mod the room and the aggressiveness. Opposed to modding the actual source. So, you get a sense of broader movement from a simpler workflow. It is less clean, and he does contrast these insane and organic sounds with trippy synthesized clean sounds. But, what sets this dude apart is the fact that has a dope sense of environment, and knows that changing the characteristics of said environment completely changes the perspective and feel of even the simplest of inputs.

      I love analogies btw, it definitely helps me communicate and understand what the person is saying or helps me help someone understand what I’m saying lol analogy is like music itself, the more music genres you know how to make, the more people you can communicate with 😂 that might’ve been a bad analogy

    Most bedroom producers have no idea how important and valuable this message is. I've talked to huge bands in my time in the music industry, who said that they completely ripped off smaller indie the local acts that didn't make it, Yeah Yeah Yeahs for example. I heard a live recording of the band they ripped off, it's shocking, you think they'd sue them. Nirvana 100% got their sound from another band FFS. It's really hard to find recordings of this other band from Seattle, but when you hear it, it's unmistakable. Wish I could remember the name, but Kurt admitted it just before he died. They completely ripped off this other band's sound. If you heard them, you'd think it was Nirvana, just with bad lyrics. The same goes for electronic music. There are about 50 electronica house acts that most people would not be able to tell apart.

    • @graysonclark3461
      @graysonclark3461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He’s saying for people just starting out to copy others so that they can learn the mechanics of how everything works, and then they can use what they’ve learned to come up with their own sound. I don’t think he’s suggesting to rip an artist off and release the music as your own.

    • @neb2612
      @neb2612 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think your missing the point my man. This is something that comes up again and again when you listen to interviews with major artists. They copy other peoples music to understand how its done. Just listening to your favourite songs is not enough as an artist. You need to copy it to learn it. You then use all your influences to come up with your own style. All artists in all areas of life do this to create unique art. Hes not saying, copy a song and release it.

    • @NeonKue
      @NeonKue ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not steal necessarily but copy the art so you know how it's made then you can develop your own sound style and branch out from it. That's how every artist starts out being inspired by another artist.
