- After a couple days with the kids, I’m back on board to carry on with the renovation. Today the engine bay and bow bilge need some rust treatment

If you have to use a spray can for engine, spray it into a container and brush it onto engine. Easy
Don't you just hate it when you've got the wrong size kids for the job 🤣. Used to love to help my dad with his many projects. Good on ya for getting the kids involved.
The ratio of mess to actual work does improve as they age. Sadly I think I have to return one as all she ever does is mess.

Can you get a compressed air line to the boat from the yard workshop?
2 reasons - It would enable you to use a needle gun/descaler where your gland dribbles into the engine bay, they work very well for breaking off that thick rust scale. Also good for corners elsewhere where it's hard to get a wire wheel in.
About £25 to buy one, but I'll bet the workshop has one already they might loan?. Bloody noisy, however.
Secondly, compressed air is very good at drying off water, might come in handy for that.
That spray foam was like the hair on my head. Almost non existent...

I’m just going to give you something to ponder! Oxidation is removals by ionizing metal and moving from dense to less dense! Steel to water in essence!
Expansion is two dissimilar materials that contract and expand at different rates causing separation!
Something to think about!
Petroleum paints lose esters to air to dry and eventually mud cracks allowing moisture to carry away metal! Latex however expands and contracts longer because it does not loose its esters as fast!
Some alkaloid paints last because they oxidize slower but not as long as latex!
My suggestion is to find a latex oxide or even better a latex containing zink!
You know how zink Annedroids work on a boat!

Tar will do just what foam does!
It’s about adhesive!
I have used paint we grit blasted then put a sprinkler on then let dry to form powdered rust so the paint would have a Chemical reaction with to have that adhesive to!
Remember your in a area that when you are using chemicals, your in a low oxygen environment!
People die because the chemicals don’t smell that bad!
Use a fan from a distance so it doesn’t ignite the fumes! Fans are a open arc!
Spray the engine paint into a pot then paint it on for those tricky areas. 👍
Lots of great work and progress. Have to say, seeing the person on the other boat, at the end was a bit scary, almost like seeing a ghost. That’s until I realized what that image was.
I thought the same, I rematched it a few times to work it out 😂
Degreaser - I think that carplan one will need washing off with water? - they normally do, check the instructions perhaps. Either way, it needs removing somehow just to get rid off the dissolved grease! (Solvent based ones you basically wipe on and wipe off with a clean (separate) rag. No point wiping it on if you don't remove it afterwards, some people miss that.)
I normally use it twice, once neat followed by a wash to get the worst of the grease/oil off, then neat anywhere that hasn't worked and diluted on the rest once the second neat stuff has had a chance to work in.
I tend to find that it works best with some agitation from a brush or sponge or it can still leave an oily film right on the surface.
Geeze Louise, James, I can't believe all the work that you are doing each day. Makes me hurt just thinking about it. I can only imagine how much you must ache at the end of each project. Wish there was a masseuse nearby. Maybe a good heating pad would provide some relief. 😮 Leigh
The original spray foam in the bow is really disappointingly thin … hope they did a better job elsewhere in the boat.

If you can get loan of a scabbler (needle gun), that would shift the rust in the floor of the engine bay.

The rust reformer works well on boat trailers used in salt water - w/ a good coat of paint lasting 5 years mostly rust free -
Another newbie to the channel :) Can you get a trot on with the build please - I have binge watched the entire Project 58 build and can't wait for the next instalment 😂 I like how you are not cutting corners on this and are not afraid to rip stuff out when needed. Totally agree with the ceiling for example - those electrics look ropey at best, so better to get everything out, so that you know it's done properly and will be safe. Looking forward to seeing more of the "things going in" phase - top job so far mate !

Hi James , I have watched your channel since day one on Sloe Patrol, always so enjoyable but one thing that amazes me is your work rate, no one could ever call you lazy, you are an absolute grafter mate. I think that when you finish project 58 you will have a cracking boat, and I am sure you will have some great times with the kids, and hopefully have some serious time without having to do anything major on the boat, take care and all the best to you and the family.
Too right - I would be in hospital if i did the amount of work James puts in. Lazy he ain't !

I don’t believe cabs of spray foam will be any good
If I recall, they are designed to fill nooks and crannies, not flat surfaces.

Hi James, I'm new to your channel. I had looked into buying a boat when i was about 19, but didn't, I'm now 45 and have had a hankering ever since, and look into it from time to time as the lifestyle seems really appealing to me. I've watched loads of your video's restoring Sloe, and now the new one, really great work and have enjoyed watching your progress. I'm practical guy, have done loads of car and bike projects and my house too. Have been a coded welder previously, so would love to get stuck into a similar project one day when life permits. Keep up the good work!
Stern gland drip solutions
Drill and tap a 1/2 hole on top of the gland run a pipe from raw water pump after it goes through the exchanger , no more drips
Stern gland temperature should not exceed 60 degrees C
How about using kingspan instead of spray foam it’s quicker !
Spray the can into the plastic top and then brush it on

Reading a lot about spray foam on forum's just now and lots of people saying its not thick enough and not all even am thinking about doing kingspan as its thicker and even all over just your preference what to use but anything would be better than that you pulled off loving the vlogs
Not sure the canned spray foam is going to be easy for such a big area. Might be more time and cost effective to glue on some foil-backed insulation.
Janes, why don’t you use your multitool no blade to remove all that rust be a lot quicker and easier??? All the very best from Terry
I saw this on a canal chat website?
One blogger applied it to the inside of their water tank and the other applied it after wire brushing off rust and before priming with an oxide primer.
As far as I understand it ( and I have consulted the manufacturers ) tannic acid / polymer based products like Vactan are designed to protect steel work that cannot be accessed for painting, its not a pre primer for any kind of paint system. Using it like this is at best a pointless waste of money and at worst preventing the primer bonding to the steel work and all further paint layers are dependent on the rust converter staying put, which if you have used these products you will know they are not in any way equal to a paint primer for longevity, Vactan will wash off steel work in one Autumn / winter in my experience.
Personal I would have had the engine bay grit blasted? Wish I could but don’t want to remove my engine

James, Google "Naval Jelly", might want to use it on the bottom of the boat. Just a thought.
10:10 - Might be too late for you, but don't use the individual cans of instant spray foam. It'll cost a bit more as one big lump sum than individual cans bought over time, but you should be able to find the DIY kit boxes with 2 part spray foam at your local home improvement store. They come with their own spray wand and it would take magnitudes less time doing it that way than going one line at a time with a can.
All the spray foam cans we've found have been open-cell foam - but you want closed-cell foam for narrowboat insulation or it'll soak up water. We're still looking for closed-cells cans to fill in a few gaps on our closed-cell spray-foam insulation applied by an installer. We'll see if we can find the kits you mention, thanks. (Dot)

You're obsesed with Vactan and wasting yout time and money using it where its not needed.
Your rust problem is comparable to car undercarriage... And after decades of trying different stuff, I can say: There is NOTHING that can remove or stop rust.
The only things that remove it, are acid or grinders. Cutting away any traces of rust, replacing it with new steel.
And the only thing that slows it down, is grease based stuff like fluid film. But then, nothing will stick to it.
So there is no proper way of getting rid of the rust and protecting the inside... You can't acid-dip the whole boat 🤣
