I now live in Canada’s west, in the southern interior of BC - Fred don’t play here much, if at all. I’m having a “catch up with Fred” day. We were pals since the late 70’s, but I got to know Fred through Willie P Bennett, who was already a good friend by then - God bless you, Willie. I’m having a “catch up” day because I lost touch with Fred when he got serious with Tiff. I knew her, but as a “Ginn Sisters” member. She’d been part of the show for a handful of years by the time they got serious. Ahhh…..a musician meets his muse and says so long to his buddies - it’s an old story. I just recently watched his Grand Old Opry performance - made me proud! (25 years too late, but they did it) Great vid! Just loved it! I spent over 40 years in the Canadian music biz - performer, club owner, festival owner, even 5 years in public radio as a DJ/ Show Host. I still talk to Tom Wilson and Collin Linden of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings regularly. I guess it was another friends death, Gordon Lightfoot, just recently, that sent me down this nostalgia trip. We’re all so f’n old now! Peace PS - I was at the “Fed Pic-nic” (circa 2002-3) when Fred himself, chased down a thief who was stealing from the merch tent and private tents, too. It was the talk of the camp ground for the rest of the weekend! And, yes, he beat the cops to their job!
Willie P Bennett was /is Canadian treasure. Fred's got that farmboy strength so hopefully that thief learned his lesson before he needed it beat into him. Cheers, great comment.
He's brilliant but Caistor Centre (where he was born and raised) is closer to Smithville than Guelph. Don't mind me, Guelph used to beat us pretty bad in hockey so i won't allow Guelph to claim him. Cheers, have a great day.
