I'm surprised Kelley Armstrong wasn't on your list; she's totally the first Canadian YA author I think of. Anyways, you should totally add Everything Beautiful Is Not Ruined by Danielle Young-Ullman to your Canadian TBR because it's amazing.
Happy (belated) Canada Day! It's awesome to see a video highlighting Canadian YA authors/books, there aren't enough videos like this out there :) Also, another Canadian author I'd recommend would be Y.S. Lee -- she's written the Agency series, which is a YA historical mystery series with a cute romance full of witty banter!
Definitely! Not enough readers are aware of it, but when I think of YA historical mysteries to recommend it's one of the first that comes to mind. Sad to have the series end, but I'm interested to see what Y. S. Lee writes next!
You should add Courtney Summers' books to your TBR! She writes amazing, incredibly raw YA novels featuring flawed and unlikeable female protagonists, which is really interesting. I haven't read The Female of the Species yet, but you said you liked how raw that one was, and I just... Courtney Summers = raw. She is my favorite Canadian author, and she does not get the hype she deserves. I really hope you'll check her out. :) Happy Canada Day!
The Handmaids Tale has been my favorite book for about 3 years. I got to read it for school and I LOVED it. Haven't seen the series yet but I can't wait to.
I picked up Until It Fades which is a contemporary by K.A. Tucker whose Canadian as well.. And it has a hockey tie to it apparently... And even if you don't watch hockey it's like our sport lol 😊 hope you had a great Canada day from a fellow Canadian. 🇨🇦
I read Maud in May and I loved it. You can tell the author did a lot of research to make sure she told a good and accurate story of life Maud's life during her mid-late teens. It was so good it gave me a little bit of a book hangover
Nice! I own The Darkest Powers and The Darkness Rising trilogy in paperback and Women of the Otherworld on my Kobo :) I have only read The Darkest Powers and the first book of Women of the Otherworld so I have lot more to read haha.
Happy belated Canada day! I live in the States, but one day would love to travel to Canada because I've heard it's beautiful! Loved the recommendations!
My father came home from NY today, and got me With Malice, and it was really funny to click on your video and see you talk about it! You're the best, keep up the great work :)))
Thanks for the recommendations!! Other Canadian books that are awesome: I loved EK Johnson's dragon slayer series - The Story of Owen: Dragon Slayer of Trondheim - and Witchlanders by Lena Coakley.
Awesome vid! I am also a fiercely proud Canadian from BC! A book that is soo good and also Canadian is Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel :) I had no idea that Morgan Rhodes was Canadian, so that's pretty cool! I am def planning on picking up a bunch of these books, especially Handmaid's tale....which I also feel like a bad Canadian for not having already read lol love seeing Canadian content on TH-cam 🖤❤️🇨🇦
Oh, Anne of Green Gables! I grew up with Anne! I love the first three books and the 8th book! As a Quebecer, I don't really know a lot of english canadian literature (shame on me) so thanks for those recommendations!
If you read french, of course I can recommend books! Nos many french canadian authors are translated in english. I mostly read adult fiction, though. In the category "not that complicated to read" : Michel Jean, Sophie Bienvenu, Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette (loved "la femme qui fuit"), Hervé Gagnon (polars), Nathalie Roy (chick litt), Marie Laberge. In YA, I liked books by Sarah-Maude Beauchesne, Patrick Isabelle... I know there's nice things in the Tabou collection, at the Éditions de Mortagne!
omg I love that shirt and totally gonna grab one from Chapters cuz F YEAHHHH🍁🍁🍁 proud Canadian right here. loved you hailey u r my fav. also have u seen the handmaids take TV show?
you should read O. R. Melling's Faerie Chronicles--some of them are set in Canada, and the 4th one is set entirely in Canada with adventures that go all over the country as well as into the faerie world! they're really well written YA books that I loved when I was 11 and still love just as much now! (in fact I would recommend everyone read the 4th book "The Book of Dreams" first because it is the best and longest and most beautiful, and then read the others for context if you want to...
Loved this video & haha I"m not canadian but I love when people talk about the country they are from. And I love reading from non usa authors. And I believe the valiant will be a duology & I can't wait to read it. And I am dying to read the last falling kingdoms book.
YES!!!! Canadian books getting some much deserved love on booktube....that being said I am a shameful Canadian for not having read ANY of these! I'd also recommend Not Suitable For Family Viewing by Vicki Grant if you haven't read it already. It takes place in Nova Scotia and is a unique blend of cutesy romance and thrilling mystery
Rupi Kaur is a Canadian author that wrote Milk and Honey, she lives in Toronto, Ontario I think still. I just read her poetry book recently and I loved it. You should check it out Hailey.
we are all made of molecules is such a quick read! it doesnt deal with mental illness though. I know you don't like knowing alot before diving in so I won't spoil! it's cute for what it is, but to be honest I only like half of the book. I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
Alyxandra Harvey - The Lovegrove Legacy, Danielle Jensen - Stolen Songbird, Gail Gallant - Apparition, Courtney Summers - This is Not a Test. I'm sure there are sites that can list more, but these are the ones I've personally read and enjoyed.
The First Stone by Don Aker is another great YA Canlit. It's written by a Haligonian and takes place in Halifax! Also, if you haven't read The Break by Katerena Vermette, the book that should have read Canada Reads this year, you should defs pick it up. It's fantastic (though not YA).
I'm reading only Canadian authors for July to celebrate! I am not a big reader of YA though, but I though A Thousand Nights sounded cool. Some of the other books on my TBR: - Tigana (Guy Gavriel Kay) - Anne of Avonlea (L.M. Montgomery) - The Blind Assassin (Margaret Atwood, I didn't find The Handmaid's Tale that amazing but I'm willing to try something else she wrote) - An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth (Chris Hadfield) - Sleeping Giants (Sylvain Neuvel) Happy Canada Day!
This is a clever idea! You should totally read we are all made of molecules, it's great and has a lot of Canadian references :p. Would you ever do a video talking about your job? As in how you got it, what it's like… I'm really interested in working at chapters and wanna know what it's all about :p
I'm from the states. But I love that you made this video my sister is half Canadian so I've been there quite a few times and I'm kind of jealous that I'm not Canadian like you. It would be awesoMe if you did a video of cool places to visit in Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Tara Taillon Alice Munro isn't YA 😊 Kelly Armstrong I haven't read and it's not really my style, that's why she isn't included! But they are great Canadian names for people to know!
Have you read any other books by L M Montgomery? I loved The Blue Castle even more then Anne Of Green Gables which was a pleasant surprise. I plan to get all of her books because Im now obsesse! I wish I was Canadia hahaha. I was born and raised and still live in Maine USA, which is the next best thing and practically in Canada, lol. I love how passionate you are about being Canadian.
i'm not sure if translations are available, but simon boulerice is a wonderful french canadian author who's written a couple of great ya novels. also, india desjardins, although i'm not entirely sure if her aurélie laflamme series classifies as ya or middle grade. great video, by the way! i'm always trying to read more "locally" and this was very helpful.
I'm currently reading Frostblood and loving it! I'll have the sequel preordered when I'm finished! I'm really interested in E.K. Johnston's books! I was wondering, is there really any speech/dialect difference between citizens of the US and Canada, because I can't hear any differences while I do hear difference between Australia, US, UK, Irish and people who have English as a second language.
I love retellings and I'm not sure if you read this yet but have you read the Inkheart trilogy by Cornelia Funke it's so good I think you would enjoy it😊
Can you do a video on translated books that weren't originally English? I'm German and I always wondered whether rading a translated book as a native English speaker is the same as for any other reader as most books are in English anyway.
Great video as always. Random question for anyone: What's better The catcher in the rye or Pride & Prejudice? I want to buy one of those books. But not sure which one. Please Help😄😄
A B I haven't read Pride and Prejudice, but I Did read The Catcher in the Rye and enjoyed it. I think that you will enjoy more if you are a teenager. The main character can be quite annoying sometimes. Over all, The Catcher in the Rye isn't for everyone, so.... even if I haven't read it, recommend Pride and Prejudice or any Jane Austen book.
my question doesn't really suit your video but I wanted to ask if you have read "when it's real" or "textrovert". I loved both books so much and read them in less than 3 days together. I think you would really really like them
HAILEY!!! I know you book box (that's how I found you). I'm not sure if you CHOOSE to sub to any or if they're all sent to you but I feel very strongly that you need to sub to LITCUBE for August as it is STEAM PUNK ALICE IN WONDERLAND THEMED!!!! This has been a directed PSA from a fan. Thank you.
ahhhh Chapters ... my happy place .. my safe place .. my haven .. I love Canada :P
I get the feeling that Hailey... Might be Canadian
I'm surprised Kelley Armstrong wasn't on your list; she's totally the first Canadian YA author I think of. Anyways, you should totally add Everything Beautiful Is Not Ruined by Danielle Young-Ullman to your Canadian TBR because it's amazing.

I found this series on accident and I'm so glad that it was the first book in the series and that I found it. It's one of the best series!!!
Awesome. More books for my TBR :) Also, I am married to a Canadian, so I'm super into this kind of thing.
