    The real question is how do you read at 100 pages per hour.
    For instance, are you "speed reading" entire sentences or paragraphs together? Do you ever skip words and have to go back and reread? Do you "hear" the words in your head as you are reading? Do you visualize as you read?
    Also, do you know what that converts to in words per minute?

    • @TihomirKit
      @TihomirKit 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No such thing as speed reading. Basically speed reading = low quality reading where you don't really get to appreciate the work. You might be able to pick up the general story but what's the point then - just read a comprehensive summary. The more you increase the "speed", at some point you just start losing comprehension and retention and at that point it becomes scanning, not reading.
      There has been research done where they tested speed readers and concluded they couldn't answer even the most basic questions about what they "read". The brain is just not able to process information that quickly.
      Not saying that's what Brian is doing, but he's probably reaching that limit of how fast it can actually be done.
      I mean, imagine going into an art gallery and glancing at every piece for about half a second, zipping out of the place in 3 minutes and claiming you've seen everything in there.. you wouldn't be able to even list all the items that were there.

    • @raswartz
      @raswartz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TihomirKit That all sounds pretty plausible to me. I know my speed ranges from 300 wpm to 1000 wpm if I'm really pushing but I do notice a drop-off in comprehension around 500 or 600 wpm.

    I'm always surprised how little there is about reading speed on TH-cam. I thought there were howtos on everything but the material on reading is really old and just advertisements.
    I've gotten up to 60 pgs an hour with no sweat. If I'm taking more than a few days to read an average-sized fantasy novel, it's usually just because life has gotten hectic.
    I had a girlfriend in college who taught herself to read when she was 3, and she could read an 800 page book in a day. She would read ATLAS SHRUGGED in a weekend. I don't know how she did it because she was spending a lot of time with me.

    Put yourself on a schedule if you can. If you only have an hour, make it a solid block hour of reading. No checking the phone, no getting distracted, no changing the music, just read.
    If you don’t have solid blocks when you can read, then make it a habit to grab your book rather than your phone when you DO have time, even ten minutes at a time spent reading instead of browsing the phone will be a win.
    Carry your book with you wherever you go. I used to go to a lot of hockey games, and there’s a lot of down time there during intermission, before the game, etc. Read your book. I don’t read particularly fast but I would consistently have time to read at least 50 pages during the intermissions and before the game started.

    One tip I’ve been using from another book tuber is to stop sub-vocalizing when reading. Just treat the pages like you do a stop sign. You don’t sub-vocalize stop every time you see that sign . Do the same while in the book. That was the advice I heard so I keep trying it and I’ve improved my speed for sure.

      Is it still enjoyable in the same way when you don't hear the voice in your head telling the story? I'd also worry about retaining as much information, but I suppose some books are more worthy of taking my time with.

    I’m a naturally fast reader and got even faster in law school. I’m also single (divorced) but do have kids. Otherwise, I spend a ton of free time reading rather than doing other stuff. Here’s my big question: what about finding time to WRITE? What’s your writing regimen? I’m curious given you work full time and read a lot.

      I write during the day Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I work at prison 4 days a week. Most nights I also put in an hour or so of writing too

    My naggy wife and 13 year old daughter really kill my reading time. By the time I get some uninterrupted free time, it’s
    Late in the evening and I doze off after like 10 pages
