- SUP Y'ALL?! Moving along EXO-PLORING into this new-to-me group. I clearly already had many clues with their top-notch talents but DAMN, Mama (both versions) are so... EPIC. I didn't expect this much epicness (I know that's probably not a word but y'all feel me right?!) to be showcased so soon before their official debut! I'm SO glad I decided to go on an EXO journey.🤩

- I'm Cambodian and Chinese.
- I was born in November of 1983 (so I'll be 37 this year) and raised in Houston, TX.
- "OG KPOP STAN": I've always used the term "OG" (supposedly "original gangster") to define being old-school, and I became an avid Korean music aka Kpop listener/lover since 1998. Kpop was my coping mechanism from the bullying I experienced in my younger years and it's just stuck by me ever since.
- I was a hiphop dancer for about 7 years. EXO's logo changes for every comeback and every MV, but it always has the letters EXO in it somehow. So you will never see the same logo -- their logo is even a part of their storyline and concept and it changes to fit whatever the theme of their current MV is. It's just another element of EXO that adds to the excitement of each comeback. Fans wait to see what the next logo will look like and how EXO will be used within it.

The one with the sword who makes the flip is Tao, now an ex member, he has a black belt in wushu, he was with the group for three years and had quite a lot of injuries from all the flips and dances
Until 2015 ,EXO had two versions for each MV,with different members singing (Exo K and Exo M), after that, when only one chinese member remained , they only made the same MV double, but only with different language, korean and chinese, so, after "Call me baby", you will have only one MV pro song to watch
But the line distribution is still different until "Love me right" (let's not forget Lay's epic rap in the M version ^^)... afterwards the music videos in both languages are the same...

It's great that you consider the year this mv was released. Because other reactors just laugh at the cringiness of it as they say, without even considering that this was released in the year when the effects and the mv overall is just advanced for it. Congrats on the 5k subs btw! More power!

I am so glad you also took the time to watch the EXO-M version of "Mama," because the whole point of both the EXO-K and EXO-M versions of their songs and each MV is to introduce you to EXO's concept and storyline. "Mama" is like the first episode of EXO's drama -- it sets up everything to come in the rest of the series. And if you miss any part of the first episode you will forever be lost when it comes to the rest of EXO's story. So it's important to watch both versions. And that goes for all of EXO's MV, if you watch both versions of everything EXO does, you might be able to understand a little more about EXO's mission and everything they have been sent to Earth to do.
The intro's are 100% the same in both MVs. The "lightbulbs" was actually the infinity symbol and it was showing how the two groups are connected on a never ending loop. Each half represents one half of EXO (EXO-K and EXO-M) and when they become one and reunite the two halves of the Tree of Life they become infinitely powerful.
EXO DEBUTED in 2012 with "Mama, so this is more than 8 years ago. Xiumin, the oldest, was about 22 at this time and Sehun and Kai, who are the youngest, were about 18. However, Suho and Kai were the members that trained the longest with the company before they debuted. Suho was a trainee for 7 years -- he began when he was about 14 years old (he was about 21 when he debuted) -- and Kai was a trainee for about 6 years -- he started training when he was about 12. But Baekhyun was only a trainee for about 6 months before he debuted. He was one of the older trainees at about 20 years old. So this just goes to show you the amount of hard word, dedication and talent that EXO has.
As you know, as an SM Entertainment group it's really no surprise that the members are all amazing vocalists and dancers because that's just a fact about the type of people that SM selects to be a part of its company. SM has become known for its amazing vocalists and dancers and that is why it's one of the big 3 entertainment companies in Korea and around the world.
All of the members of EXO are amazing vocalists even their rappers. If you follow SM Entertainment groups, you will soon discover that all of SM's rappers were actually chosen to become trainees for their vocal and/or dancing skills. All of SM's rappers learned to rap, or at least became good at it, after they joined the company. Therefore, all of SM's artists are amazing singers -- being good at rapping is just a bonus.
You also should look up the lyrics for "Mama." As you noticed, the majority of their chant is in English: "Shoot anonymous, anonymous; Heartless, mindless; No one who care about me ... Careless, careless (Mama: Mama in Korean means Your Majesty); Shoot anonymous, anonymous (Mama); Heartless, mindless (Mama); No one who care about me (Mama)" Also, if you pay attention to what the whole song is talking about and what the lyrics mean it will give you even more insight into why EXO have been sent to Earth and what their mission is all about.
EXO's storyline begins with them being sent to Earth to try and heal the world and to stop and prevent the Red Force from taking over and corrupting everything. And the story in the lyrics of "Mama" foreshadows what they will have to overcome and understand about humans and our world to accomplish their tasks. EXO kind of takes humanity to task and asks us to explain why we would allow all this anger and hatred to cloud everything around us and why we don't love each other more? It's really a very beautiful message and the more you learn about EXO the more interesting the whole thing becomes.
In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all this evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as war, hate and the destruction of the environment etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace.
In the EXO-M MV Xiumin and Kris are the members that do the screamo part.
And if you watch EXO pre-debut teaser videos you will see Tao showcasing his martial arts skills and see that all his moves are 100% real. He can really flip and jump and spin like that and if in a battle he could kick butt. The numerous injuries he sustained from having to do those stuns in MVs and during live performances and on variety shows, etc. is one of the reasons why he left the group. The sword is real and he also often uses a staff.
EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-Fi and part based on reality, which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days, and everything since then and everything yet to come, it all is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun and Kai's parts in SuperM, all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. Whether it's an MV from the group, a solo project from one of the members, a sub-unit project, a live performance, teaser videos, concert VCRs, or even a good amount of their choreography, it all has been designed to connect to EXO's storyline.
It's kind of mind blowing the amount of planning and manipulation SM has been doing over the years to connect all the dots and to continue the story. It gets even crazier when you realize how even the most minute of details were crafted to be a hidden message or detail within that storyline.
For example, In EXO's "Overdose" MV they have been lured into and trapped in a maze by the Red Force and they are trying to use their superpowers to figure out a way to escape, but somehow the maze affects their powers and it causes them to lose control and allows the Red Force to capture them. After "Overdose," the story picks up in their "Lucky One" MV where the Red Force has transferred the members from the maze to a hospital-like setting that is supposed to be a government lab facility where the Red Force is now doing experiments on EXO to figure out what makes them special and to find a way to disrupt their connection to the Tree of Life and to prevent them from gaining control, as well as maybe figure out what they need to do to clone them like we see has been done in their "Obsession" MV, etc. In "Lucky One" the members use their powers to overthrow the Red Force and to escape the facility. And that is where the story picks up in their "Ko Ko Bop" MV. in "Ko Ko Bop" EXO are free from the Red Forces' control for the moment and they all act like they are in a drugged state. The Ko Ko Bop drink that Suho mixes and the wafers or pills that the members all take, is supposed to help them detox from the drugs they were given against their will by the Red Force when they were being experimented on. Because they are still a little loopy from the drugs, in "Ko Ko Bop" you see them all playing with their powers without caution.
Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we, as EXO-L, have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeon) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation
(Kai means door or gateway, so his stage name is supposed to foreshadow his role within EXO's storyline.)
🌪Sehun is the youngest member of the group and he is a lead rapper, lead dancer and a vocalist -- his power is the ability to control wind
EXO-M
❄Xiumin (Kim MinSeok) is the oldest member of the group and he is a lead vocalist and lead rapper and his power is the ability to control snow/ice (frost)
🦄 Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the group, he is a main dancer, lead vocalist and rapper -- his power is the ability to heal anything.
🌩 Chen (Kim JongDae) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)
The Chinese members who, eventually, leave the group:

💭 Luhan was a main vocalist and his power was telekinesis (The ability to control things with his mind)

In Korean Mama is a term they use to address a leader or king or queen. It's a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family, and especially the head of the royal family or leader, "Mama." So, in this song, they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc."
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012 and "Mama" is their DEBUT song. "Mama" is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers.
The symbols you saw represents each of the members and it has to do with each of their powers. For instance, Kai's symbol is a pyramid and it represents teleportation, and Lay's symbol is a unicorn and it represents his power of healing, etc. (In future MVs and other things to do with EXO, when you see things like a pyramid, you know that is a reference to something to do with Kai, etc.) Even the most minute of details in EXO's content has something to do with their origin story and EXO's storyline.

EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so many of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their War album and Power album release and comeback coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment has all their release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place.

EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members.
So the two worlds the narrator is talking about is The EXO-K version of their world and the parallel universe which is EXO-M's version of their world. The Tree of life is split in half to represent the two groups -- one half is EXO-K and the other half is EXO-M. They are separate and yet the same and when the tree of life is reunited they will become one once again and restore peace in the universe.

Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do.
When you see the members all together in their "Mama" MVs they are together because they are still on Planet Exo, where they are still united. But when you see them separated it is when they have all been sent to Earth.They keep flashing back and forth between present moments and recent past moments. That was Kai who does the screamo part in the EXO-K MV. The tattoos on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO members names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story.
Now that you have seen "Mama" and are starting to understand EXO's backstory, as you watch all of their other MVs, it should make more sense to you if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with superpowers and how they are on a mission, etc.

EXO really impressed me with the vocals, which was what drew me in with TVXQ in the first place. Now, EXO is my top group and I've been an EXO-L since 2013. Totally know what you mean by the nostalgia the music video style brings. Excited to see you get to know more EXO! Chen and Sehun are my biases! Chanyeol and Suho give me a hard time though they're the biggest bias wreckers for me.

Also, each member in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M that fills the same role in each group. For example, D.O. is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; Baekhyun is the second main vocalist in K and Luhan was the second main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.)
That was Kai who does the screamo part in the EXO-K MV. The tattoos on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO members names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story.
Now that you have seen "Mama" and are starting to understand EXO's backstory, as you watch all of their other MVs, it should make more sense to you if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with superpowers and how they are on a mission, etc.

That is actually the official debut song.
MAMA is their official debut song. They had two pre debut singles and it was 'What Is Love' and 'History'. (I guess others have already mentioned this though :P)
The one doing the flip and with the sword is Tao and he's really good in martial arts, so SM used him a lot for this kind of stunts. I'm pretty sure there are videos where he does that thing you noticed with a sword, but he usually uses a stick for those.
MAMA is the introduction to their concept and their powers. Each one of them has a different one and as the intro said, they are split, but will become one to save the world. This is why the two MVs are so different, other ones don't differ as much, but eg in choreo different members will have different positions etc. (yes, they did film two separate MVs for each come back (until Obsession there were always two versions).

@@milindawilson9175 No need to thank me. I believe that reactors miss out a lot when they don't watch the M versions of the songs because they are so different (If not the MVs, vocals for sure). Plus these are so underrated. Not to mention that all 3 of my biases (so far) come from EXO-M XD
@@mialenne 10000% agree with you. I am constantly telling people the same thing and trying to rebut all the comments that say it's not important. But people just don't seem to see, hear or understand what we mean. I really think people are missing so much if they don't know EXO-M and they are doing a disservice as an EXO-L if they don't give both groups their due respect. There is no reason why the EXO-M versions of their songs should have about half as many views, but sadly they do, and it breaks my heart. EXO-M deserves the love and respect as well.

Not in every comeback. Some of EXO's comebacks he has created the logo. But not every one. I think the first logo he created was for their "Overdose" MV. I don't think he created any before then and I am pretty sure he has not done all of them since then either.

I have the same opinion when i first saw this...that this whole MV concept and set is way too ahead of its time (at that time)..
It’s their debut song and it didn’t get popular immediately coz I think people were not yet ready for this (like we thought way ahead of its time)...but later, after Wolf, people started to be curious.
Tao do the flips. But he already left the group. He learn martial arts since he was a kid . Thats why hes the one among them can do flips.. he flips also in their song OVERDOSE.. he is amazing.. what a lost to the group when he left..
