This influential German science-fiction film presents a highly stylized futuristic city where a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. When the privileged youth Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) discovers the grim scene under the city, he becomes intent on helping the workers. He befriends the rebellious teacher Maria (Brigitte Helm), but this puts him at odds with his authoritative father, leading to greater conflict.

Just imagine seeing this in 1927. This has got to be insane
1927 harrison ford 'blade runner"..
Like an early Pink Floyd gig.
Yass
It actually had mixed reviews. Sure, everyone loved the visuals, but many people criticized it for its supposedly communistic message, and after the premiere it had almost an hour of footage cut out and the title cards rewritten, reducing it to a Frankenstein ripoff.
Definitely!
For a film made in 1927 this is pretty damn impressive
i’m impressed now in 2021, i can’t imagine what the people of that time felt
Very impressive. A true masterpiece. I was surprised to find that it's available on Amazon.

An absolute masterpiece!
WHAT.. What are you on about! We don't have robots or.. really any of the main predictions

crazy to think in already 7 years it will have anniversary (a century old) and the issues in the movie and also the "artificial human" are still modern tropes but also highly relevant in our current times (AI, biopolitics, class problems, environmental disasters, spying, the question of ethics in science, etc.)
👏👏
It really is quite scary. Even the films and music we listen to today will be a century old soon enough
Occult
why is it crazy it is still relevant? a.i. came to the world what did you expect? it vanished magically over time?
Hollywood and the Media
This film is nothing short of incredible. Hopefully it gets a special reissue in the cinema one day.
Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr Robot is making a remake of it currently. Based on Sam's talent and specific style I am sure it will be good.

The original is being played with live orchestra and the soundtrack from 1927 in Berlin on s regular basis!
This is one of the most visually stunning movies ever made.
The fact that this takes place in 2000 and that it’s 2021 and we’re not even close to having the technology from this movie makes it like time only changed a little bit since 1927.
It’s probably because we didn’t fully embrace technology
In reality we do have other technologies that were absolutely incomprehensible to the people from the time this movie was made, like the internet itself, miniaturized electronics (even the conept of the transistor was alien to the people of that time), nuclear power, spaceflight, plastic materials, antibiotics, fully mechanized production lines, even jet powered airplanes.
Sure, life-like automatons are not there yet, but a lot of other stuff has surpassed what people from 100 years ago believed technology will be like in our times.
@@alexandrucraciun6978 Ok, I guess that means we’re close to what the movie shows.
@@johnnywilson1382 not at all if you think about it. This is a prediction of the future based on 1920s inventions. Because they couldn’t comprehend 21st century inventions. So our world will never look like this and it would be somewhat naive to guess once again what it will look like because technology develops so quickly. Crazy to think about 🤯
Not even Close you reckon I think we are more then close even surpassed it look around you.

Absolutely insane how they had such special effets and large sets before colour and even sound were prevalent. Truly groundbreaking art.
Sound was Available but Directors thought people wouldnt want to hear Other people talk in Film on camera. Boy was they Wrong
It’s crazy that humans made all of these shots possible with those shots of futuristic cities, all while they didn’t have the ability to talk yet.
This film aged like fine wine. Somehow even more jaw-dropping and poignant nearly a hundred years later.
Fritz Lang is my favorite director and is my hero!
Everything he has done, was way before its time.
Can see where George Lucas and Ridley Scott got their inspiration for the visuals used in their sci-fi films
James Cameron? Maria burning to reveal her robot form under the flesh... That scene immediately gave me Terminator vibes.
No it was actually Space odyssey 2001
Fredersen’s office is Palpatine’s. (And inspired Speer for Hitler’s).
And Kubrick
It's one of most epic films made in Germany.
I would have loved to see this get a Japanese dub track.
It actually has a Japanese adaptation. It's animated.
I think it’s the greatest science fiction film ever created.

The Art Deco mixed with futuristic is so damn awe inspiring and amazing, just like the music video for square hammer by Ghost
Seeing this on the big screen was a wonderful experience.
It looks like this was very modern for it's time. Some effects are incredible even now.
This is a really good trailer. I remember seeing this when this restored version was first released and it got me to buy the film.
Still the most visually stunning film ever made.
Britans in 1927 watching this were like "Wonderfull innit"
No.. Most people hated it.
Outstanding narrative and visuals, surpassing contemporary standards.
This silent masterpiece will always look amazing!
Glorious film. And now we finally get the true story of Rotwang’s insane revenge- no “crazy robot on the loose” just an embittered genius sending her to do his dirty work.
The perfect teaser to the classic 1927 Sci-Fi film. Sit back and turn the volume up on the premiere musical score by Gottfried Huppertz and watch the movie in it's entirety. You won't be disappointed.
With an masterpiece like this, it should definitely be in the National Film Registry by it's 100th anniversary.
Without Metropolis, there will be no Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Robocop, Alien and other medias today.
I still can’t believe this came out the year my great great grandmother was born

The most important sci-fi movie
I watched the whole of this German science fiction film for the first time on DVD (UK and Ireland) 📀 today (07-07-2024). It's absolutely brilliant. Although I remember watching some bits of it on DVD 📀 in spring 2008 when I was about eighteen years old and that DVD actually belongs to my sister so she bought it for herself.
I just love it. It's probably one of the best foreign films of all time. It never gets old and it will always be a timeless classic.
It takes place in 2026. It’s 2024 at the time of writing this

Good call. My buddy was saying the same thing.
It’s pretty neat how with all the technological advances, the older material is the best source for a optimal remaster, more often than not.
Such intensity !
This is Unbelievable. The maker in that era was so imaginative .

Impressive. Most impressive.
Imagine they put into a Color and Sound when the movie celebrate 100 years in 2027.
Amazing film, by the year 2000 we're be living and working on the moon. While this film was set in the future, still had aircraft of the 1920's and the acting, i imagine people were far more easily scared back then
The director was 100 years ahead of his time - he knew how things would pan out......
I feel like when this movie came out, it must’ve felt the same as when Dune 2 hit theatres and everyone was in awe of its production value and unique take on the future.
Crazy movie :)
Its so wonderful
