    This is fantastic info. I finally ditched my big compressor because I never used it, was loud as crap, and took up space in the garage. I went to bend some 1.5 DOM the other day on my model 3 air/hyd and was like, DAMNIT MAN!
    This is more user friendly and cheaper than buying another compressor. I saved the pics you sent Brandon Hunt on how you fab'd the mount. Also saw your comment on a longer jack being nice.
    Thanks for documenting this! Please feel free to send any more words of wisdom my way.

      Depending on what drill you have, 1.5 DOM with .120 wall should bend just fine. I would say 1.75 DOM .120 wall is the limit, at least with my drill. An impact gun may work better, but it also will probably be alot harder on the jack.

      @@danielbuck got it. My plan is to use the same jack but build a sleeve and collar the jack can mount to with grade 8 hardware. That way I can keep stepping up drill size if need be and if I trash a jack every now and then I can replace it.

    Daniel Buck- do you happen to have any pictures of how you mounted this jack? absolutely love the idea man! how has it done long-term?

    Great Video!! Need a measurement PLEASE. I plan to fabricate a JD2 Model 3 bender to use with JD2 dies and need to know the benders arm spacing. I found good drawings for the hole size, location and spacing on line but have not been able to determine the distance between the bender arms. In other words, how long is the 1" OD spacer in the die follower mounting arms? The spacer that the ratchet bar mounts on. Thanks!!

      @danielbuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's just under 3 3/4" The distance probably isn't all that critical, so long as the die and the follow bar are at the same height on center.

    Great idea. What was the make/model and pound rating of the jack?

    • @danielbuck
      @danielbuck  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Black “Blacksheep” Cloud - It's a "Husky 30780" brand jack, 5000lb rating.

    I was thinking about this and found your video in my research. That's pretty awesome. How is it holding up? Also how did you attach the hex head where the handle goes?

      I just welded on a 3/4" nut

    Wow, that was a pretty brilliant idea which looks like it works extremely well! I have the model 3 manual and bending .095 wall 1.75 DOM is a pain. Did you weld a piece of 3/4"ID tubing to the jack to adapt to the JD2 or is that something that is already present on the jack? Either way, very impressive!

    • @danielbuck
      @danielbuck  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chestnut250 - Yes, I welded the 1/2 piece of tubing to the end of the jack to fit the pin. In the video the tubing was 1.75" .120 wall HREW.

    nice build

    @tigerseye73 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah right. You don't need to mount it. Keep working in those sandals. Only a matter of time.

      Thanks for the tips. The setup is still working nicely :) If I ever get enough space to dedicate to the bender, I'll bolt it down.

      BTW, sandals are still working ;-)

      @@danielbuck internet safety guy got ya. What's the model of that jack if you don't mind me asking?

    • @danielbuck
      @danielbuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrSh4des those are my OSHA flip flops. :D. the jack is a Husky 30780. If I were to do it again, it would start with a longer jack, the jack is juuust long enough. longer would probably be better. It's still going smooth though, 7 years later, still bending 1.75" .120 DOM for my projects.

      I now have the bender mounted on a rolling chassis, it's more stable, and I can wheel it around. works better for 10'+ lengths of tube.

    pneumatic over hydraulic jack from Northern Tool/Harbor Freight. use one finger to pull trigger.

    • @danielbuck
      @danielbuck  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Drew E. Yep, that would work as well! If you have shop air. The electric drill and trailer jack is cheap and pretty quick though :)

    • @2drew1
      @2drew1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Buck ya, the pneumatic doesn't need a recharge after 2-3 bends.

      just use a corded drill, I have the air / hy and I'm thinking about switching mine to the jack

  • @blaisez8818

    I made the same set up. Attempted to bend 1 3/4" .120 wall and the drill wouldn't cut it. Tried an electric impact. No go. Then used an air impact. The jack failed after one bend. Get the swag offroad bracket and HF ram. Hope this helps someone.

    • @danielbuck

      Hm... I've used 3 different electric drills (battery powered), and have not had issues with either of them. Dewalt 18v, Milwaukee 18v Fuel, and some other brand. Just bent some tube yesterday for some truck bed rails, 1 3/4" .120 wall. It's possible that the jack that you used doesn't have a slow enough ratio, and it's to much for the drill, or maybe welding on it cooked all the grease on the inside?. I used a Husky 30780 jack, 5000lb rating. I forget how much I paid for it, but right now it sells for $35.

    • @danielbuck

      hm.... bummer. It works like a champ for me! Way faster than doing it manually, and from what I see on other videos, decently faster than air/hydro setup.
