Please read this! As an aircraft mechanic working as a composite repair tech I feel I can give you some advice. Clean the damaged area with acetone and you absolutely should mix that graphite in with your glue stuff and use a syringe to inject it into the cracks. The filler is what gives it strength. The glue will just crumble and crack on impact without it. Also, use sand paper not a file. Wear a respirator and gloves when sanding. You don't need to clamp it so hard. Most composite repairs only need 14-25 lbs of pressure during the cureing process. What you're doing is squeezing the adhesive out starving the damaged area of adhesive. Just turn it hand tight. 14lbs isn't a lot. I hope this helps you. You've gotten me into the hobby and I hope to be as good as you one day.
As someone with 20 years of experience in composites and aviation, i concur with the above advice :D. as far as pressure goes, a good rule of thumb is to have 1-3kg/cm2. you can go as high as 8 kg/cm2 essentially simulating a high end autoclave or a pressure mold, but that is really unnecessary in such repairs. Also, if you can, use epoxy resin and not CA, which is very brittle. CA is okish for field repairs. if you absolutely must use it, i'd recommend starting with a thinner CA which can penetrate deeper into the delaminated fibers, but you need to clamp the area in advance as it cures in seconds, not minutes
I love that a fully sponsored very talented professional pilot with a box’s of free quad frames fixes carbon fiber $6 arms:) I bought a 6 pack of arms from RR for a good deal. Your the man Steele!
Totally isn’t I have (3) aliens 3 arm screws 2 motor screws, and some double sided tape/electrical tape and your done. 10 minute swap and your back in the air.

Thanks for the continued tips and knowledge. I love how you aren't just selling product, and actually suggesting repair as an option. Keep up the great work!
Yup, looks good. The combination of thin CA and powders make REALLY strong joints. I have seen many musical instrument repair folk use the CA + baking soda trick. Subbing out graphite makes a lot of sense for carbon fiber, don't have to go back and paint anything. If others want to save some of that graphite when you are spraying it onto the CA, then you can just do it over some paper and then fold it and pour it back into the bottle when done.
You're right, we always want the greatest and latest gear and because it is so shiny and expensive we never push it to the limits. When I go fly in crazy spot i bring an old crapy kwad to push it and that is where you build your confidence and gain skillz...

Great work! Thanx 4 sharing. I would have replaced arms and never thought of repairing them - and it is that easy. My first try would have been using epoxy, but your hint that it is not thin enough makes sense. +1 for the graphite trick - that looks like original carbone without painting it - and it functions as a filler too. Much better than painting.

It's such a weird attitude considering that everything used in commercial and military aerospace is about twenty years old. If equipment isn't tested good for many years, then why should we use it?
Impressive carbon repair, I've used epoxy in the past but the CA/graphite combo makes sense and looks good. As far as the hammer and the vice, get yourself a 3-4' length of pipe and use leverage vs. impact. I thought I was seeing your vice bolts loosening w each impact, lol. Cheers man, nice work.

I should have been focusing on flying and not building this whole time!! Damn it is so much better watching you than that Bardwell dork.
Yo, a lure lock needle applicator + clear fiberglass resin + paint mix stick+ johnsons floor pastewax (release agent). Apply a hot batch of resin graphite mix to the area. Pinch it with the sticks (coated in pastewax) throw it in a vice or grips and you'll have a super strong shiny repair.

Good call on the cf repair. An actual product is available for the automotive industry, its called "Q-Bond". I Never thought to use the graphite as "filler" on my drone frames. i always just used glue, then clamped the crap out of it. Thanks Steele..
Specially when most of them want you spending $150-$200 per frame. ;} I will stick with my cheap knockoffs for now until I know I'm good enough to throw that kind of money at a tiny little frame. $20 when starting vs $150 is pretty big, specially when in the end the carbons the same.
MidnightMarrow I’m all for saving money man! Sometimes the reason name brand frames are better is because the amount of resin used in the Carbon fiber. Like the cheaper nock offs sometimes use more resin making the frame overall weaker!
@@wynnfpv Often times the companies will buy the sheets of carbon from other larger reputable manufacturers and cut out the shapes for the frames etc. Depending on where you get them anyway the frame can often be just as high quality as the official but you don't get all the attachments and parts that you might otherwise get with an official Alien frame for instance. I built my first quad months ago and haven't really flown it at all yet as where I live there's no nice grassy parks to really go at it with comfort of a soft landing for instance. So in my instance I will opt for the 20 dollar frame til I know for a fact I'm not going to WHOOPS the whole thing and be out 150+ dollars in an instant. Right now it looks and functions exactly like an Alien frame does and when it breaks it will make my wallet cry a little less when I buy another when I inevitably destroy it doing some maneuver or lose signal somewhere shitty. ;p

Parece una buena solucion para raparar. Yo baño los cantos del frame de carbono con epoxi, de esta forma, al impactar, el epoxi recibe el impacto y se desprende, dejando el carbono intacto.. asi evito que las laminas de carbono se abran.
With some old broken carbon fiber parts and a course file you can make your own carbon fiber composite powder for free, it matches the color better, and its cleaner... oh and did I mention it's free.. Just file your junk parts over some white paper and watch the magic collect.... 😁👍
Great tutorial. I just did this to my TBS source 1. A tip from a tool n die maker, a file only cuts one way. When you drag it backwards it actually dulls the file. Not knocking you at all, just thought I'd share.
Yo Steele, big fan for almost the entire year since I started getting into this stuff! I wanted to see if you might consider either doing me a favor or telling me I'm nucking futs and to get over it. It's OT for this video, but I was just watching one where you were talking about it and I figured I'd have a better chance of you seeing this on your most recent. So I know from watching your videos that you consider audio to be very important. I'm very audio oriented myself. It bugs me to drive a car, at least when I'm in "performance driving mode", when I can't hear what the engine (the entire car, really) is doing. I've been laughed at and shrugged off as some kinda nut when I bring this up. Most recently by "Boost Goose" in an NBD video. Could you PLEASE get just one manufacturer to make a VTX or AIO cam setup for tiny whoop class quads that has audio? I'm not yet great flying even whoops, but in a race setting I seem to suck much worse than I really do if I can't distinguish the sound of my whoop from the others in the race. I've started using an AKK Oscar's Backpack VTX on my whoops, but I haven't yet come up with an elegant way to mount it on a 65mm whoop and due to its size it's also a bit heavy. Maybe you'd consider making it an Ethix product, or possibly convince someone in product development at a manufacturer that there are people besides me out here who are looking for this product? The weight penalty of adding the little Mic and circuitry to do audio has to be practically insignificant. I can't imagine it adding it up to more than 1/10th of a gram. I know for a fact that there are others looking for this, because I was told about the Oscar's Backpack VTX in a thread on RCGroups where several people chimed in that they'd love to buy a product providing a good solution. When you went buzzing around your folks' house found the range check on your whoop, didn't you miss being able to hear the motors? At this point, I wouldn't be surprised by you being able to fly a quad epically while blindfolded and soundproofed, but some of us need all the help we can get and I certainly don't need any handicaps, like having only the video for reference of what my whoop is doing. I've even thought of maybe trying to use a fake sound that changes pitch depending on throttle position in my radio to give me audio feedback on what my throttle position is, but that wouldn't really correlate pitch and motor RPM as the battery sags and drains. I would be forever in your debt, an even bigger fan, and I'll sub, like and comment anything and everything you do for the rest of my days if you manage to make this happen! 😉 Not sure why I winked, 'cause I'm totally serious about the promise. Sorry about the long comment, but I don't think a good solution that I've just not found or thought of exists today, and my pleas, to date, have fallen on deaf ears. I imagine the product will appear in the marketplace eventually, as technology progresses, but I'm old and would like it to happen ASAFP, before my hands become so crippled from arthritis I can't fly any more. Which brings me to another product idea, but I'll save that for another time.😉 To anyone who has read this far, Thank You! If you know of anything better than the Oscar's Backpack VTX, please point me in the right direction. If you agree or disagree, please thumbs up/down and/or reply. Thanks again!!! 🖒👊✌🖖
Steele, do you know what type of resin is used when the carbon is first made(epoxy, polyester)? I have done similar repairs but with thinned epoxy to make it runny like supper glue. I found if you wrap the the part in plastic thin put it between two pieces of wood and then put that in a vice or use a bunch of adjustable clamps you get a pretty smooth finish that requires a lot less filing, if any.
Awesome steele have you ever tried cleaning it with DP60 & an old toothbrush to clean up those dirty bust up carbon and give you a good clean surface for working on :-) and have a stronger repair steele

Parece una buena solucion para raparar. Yo baño los cantos del frame de carbono con epoxi, de esta forma, al impactar, el epoxi recibe el impacto y se desprende, dejando el carbono intacto.. asi evito que las laminas de carbono se abran.
Originality at its best breh, sticking to your roots=consistency..that's why you are alwayz killn it🤔👍
I'll definitely have to trade out my baking soda for graphite powder for this trick. Thanks a bunch.
Right...Great idea...
With some old broken carbon fiber parts and a course file you can make your own carbon fiber composite powder for free, it matches the color better, and its cleaner... oh and did I mention it's free..
Just file your junk parts over some white paper and watch the magic collect.... 😁👍
if youre going to file the carbon you could do so under a running faucet to reduce the risk of inhaling the dust.
Awesome job steele
Which brings me to another product idea, but I'll save that for another time.😉
To anyone who has read this far, Thank You! If you know of anything better than the Oscar's Backpack VTX, please point me in the right direction. If you agree or disagree, please thumbs up/down and/or reply. Thanks again!!! 🖒👊✌🖖
No joke. Please wear a mask! great videos!
Hello steel nice video did u know if u use bakeing soda with locktight 401 it dry almost instantly and harder than just letting it dry
You gotta start using loctite 435 that stuff is real magic and yes i saw the vid is from 3 years ago.
Thank you for this ♥️✌
thumbs up! could you do a video about the differences between 3D and acro flight and why you use acro instead of 3D? :-)
Go to Zoe fpv. She's all about explaining 3d
Uhu+ is Awesome
Good job! Thanks
Is there a danger of getting the graphite powder into the motors or your electronics?
Nope. It’s not magnetic that I know of
@Ryan Ringer Graphite is conductive, dunno if it can break anything, be sure to dust off your quad before plugging the battery just to be sure.
on small stuff i just apply a bit of silicone conformal coating
Steele, do you know what type of resin is used when the carbon is first made(epoxy, polyester)? I have done similar repairs but with thinned epoxy to make it runny like supper glue. I found if you wrap the the part in plastic thin put it between two pieces of wood and then put that in a vice or use a bunch of adjustable clamps you get a pretty smooth finish that requires a lot less filing, if any.
honestly why not TPU to protect the arms ... this works for me on hard crashes and avoids all of this.
Weight... and it looks terrible imo
Thanks Steele!! Steele "Take some of the RF 'Junk' and make it fly good then I'll maybe change!" HaHaHaHa
Awesome steele have you ever tried cleaning it with DP60 & an old toothbrush to clean up those dirty bust up carbon and give you a good clean surface for working on :-) and have a stronger repair steele
Alien may be outdated but it flies better than my Reverb and Rooster. It’s my go to all day long.
