Hey Woo the Brittan tower in Groom was erected that way back in the 70’s by my husband who worked for the iron working company who the Brittan family hired. It was a tourist attraction to get attention. Guess it’s still working 😊
I lived in Amarillo all the 70's and remember when the Cadillacs were first put in place the cars still had chrome trim and we're pretty much complete. "Cadillac Ranch" became world famous. Good to see Adam making that stop.

Hi Adam, Two friends and I passed through the panhandle back in 1961, coming back from California. There was a big rain storm, almost tornado weather, when it began to hail. The stones were as big as league balls, and we pulled under a canope by a restaurant and gas station. As we were drinking our coffee, the glass domes on the gas pumps were each getting hit by the hail. About ten or fifteen minutes later, this young man pulls in with his motorcycle and came inside and took his soaked jacket off, and his body was covered in large black and blue marks. He wasn't wearing a helmet either! Really felt sorry for the lad. I was lucky, and didn't have any dents in my '56 Chevy., but other people did pull in later, with dented cars. My grandparents lived in Amarillo from the early 1940's until they both passed. My mother's favorite song was Amarillo by morning by George Strait. I loved visiting there. Whatever you do if you head out of Texas going toward New Mexico, hold your nose through Hereford Tx. LOL

2007 that Stuckey’s was still open. I stopped there to buy a pecan log. We use to fly from Chicago to LA to visit family every year but last year we took another road trip via I40 and it was great. We’ll be doing it again this year.

Last year when we drove from Chicago to LA I pointed out some the spots you stopped at on your route 66 series and his face lit up. We’ll have to stop at this burger barrel and that root beer stand. Last time I was in Amarillo, TX was in June of 1982. Was driving from California on I-40 heading to Arkansas to visit relatives. We got a flat tire right around that first gas station you showed. It was open then. 😉 Thanks for the memories!
That Burger Barrel is an Original A&W Root Beer Stand. They started in California and as a kid in Escondido we used to go one there. I think Co-D was talking about “The Varsity” burgers in Atlanta. Thanks again ATW & Co-D..
I know you like to get to those places less traveled but I can't believe you guys didn't go to The Big Texan Steakhouse on route 66! It's a roadside attraction all by itself. Hey Adam, I have a suggestion for a stop, the next time you travel through the Amarillo area. Our daughter goes to college down in Canyon and they have a great little shop to get a nice glass of tea. It's a place called, "Pure Water," in Canyon, TX, It's a great little shop, with a friendly staff and some great tea flavors.
