  • In this tutorial I'll show how to draw a Jack Russell type dog in pastels. The fur for this dog is a mixture of wiry and soft textures so the balance between pencil and softening techniques are important. The layering process plays a very big part in how much depth can be achieved. With wiry fur textures like this, the fur overlaps in different ways so drawing the right layer at the right time is so important. This is something that the real time tutorial really covers thoroughly.

Fabulous work, and great tips!! I'm going to try working in small areas as you suggest, instead of laying base layer down for entire animal and then going back in with details. Your works are so inspiring 🥰

great work, it looks like some of the pastel pencils you are using are Derwent, I was wondering what you think of them.

How do you get pencils sharpened?

I use a Stanley knife to sharpen my pencils.

I try so hard to work in small sections. And it’s like my brain can’t put detail in untill I have all of my values in.

@suziewagner9342 if working in whole layers works for you there's no need to change 🥰. I've tried working one layer at a time and I get bored and find I skip stages. So I've always preferred to work in small sections.

You make me want to abandon my acrylic paint!!

I love working in multiple mediums. Acrylics are wonderful to use but I do love how easy it is to blend pastels. But I wouldn't want to pick which medium is my favourite as I love using them both 🤣
