David, Your you tube videos are very helpful to me as a new bee keeper. I love that you are a clear and effective communicator and very honest about the good, bad, and ugly truths about bee keeping. Thank you for your help and keep up the good work. I love your videos.
I am going to be starting for the first time this spring and I am really excited to see my own bees out in my garden enjoying all the flowers I planted for them and to add them to our homestead and create that much more sustainability for ourselves.
Have not started bee keeping just collecting knowledge. My hubby just retired from the military and we are working twards regenerative permaculture farming. Im so excited to get some bees! Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!
Looking forward to starting up beekeeping, researching pointers to make it successful, no swarming , no mass die offs. Appreciate learning from different beekeepers on how to look after the bees.
Thanks so much... this is all so helpful in helping me decide whether to move into beekeeping or not. I have the property, and now that I retired, have more time. But this is so multi-faceted, and I want to do a great job of caring for the girls!
David, I have learned so much from you from your talks on here. I love my bees. It has improved my mental health no end and you also have contributed to that. So thankyou
Starting this upcoming spring. Honestly, just looking forward to helping out environment and teaching my kids. Getting honey will be an extra, but I’m not getting into it for the honey. Just pollination and helping bees, mainly.
Great video Dave. I'm into this about six years now. If you ask me for a few words describing Beekeeping. Frustrating and expensive. Let's hope for better outcomes this year. 2 years ago I made $1000 selling honey locally (while still employed). Now retired and this year the rains ruined the honey crop. Hopefully, 2024 will be a good year for the bees.
Understanding bees is very new to me. I researched them for three years before keeping bees. And I've learned more this year than I ever have, I started beekeeping because of my gardening experience. Knowing that they're pollination skills made/ drew me to beekeeping myself. Being attracted to your channel helped me with the confidence I needed to pursue it. I understand the ten years you've been talking about because it took me a while (7 years to understand gardening)
I just love seeing life in my yard. I was fortunate that I got my first hive just before COVID-19. Bees kept me sane while I was teaching online. I would go watch my bees in my breaks between classes. So good!
I'm fairly new to bee keeping, only about 4 years this spring. Haha! I've lost a few quality hives in my short time practicing. I've currently got a wine barrel probably 1/4 - 1/3 full of happy bees. And my plan is in early ish spring time is to cut out some of the comb ,while keeping close watch for the queen. I want to split the hive into about 3 more standard box hives. Split them along with the young bees to hopefully rear a new queen for each box, suffice we have plenty of pollen and nectar to create the royal jelly to do so. I'm just waiting for that first strong bloom to do it. My question is should I keep checking on the inside of the hive during this rainy season that we have going in California this year? I don't want to freeze them out from the damp cold. But they are active on the non rainy days, and I don't want to neglect them and have them abscond like my other hives have.... is every sunny mid day checkup say approximately every other weekend or month enough? I work a regular job m-f from dawn till dusk the rest of the time. It is hard to get a 1 pm checkup when ever I would "want to". Thanks David
I just bought my first two hives on Black Friday. I really can’t wait to start keeping bees and learning about them. I’d say the best part of bee keeping is harvesting honey. It’s seems so rewarding.
I'm looking forward to harvesting our own honey to use in my bread baking and medicinals plus my husband is excited to retire from his job and become a beekeeper to keep busy and learning. 😊
Mr. David thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’m a young bee keeper. I like your videos. They are very interesting and I’m learning a lot. I have a question on how can I help the population of my bees during the winter.
Hello David - The thing that I enjoy most about bee keeping is the ongoing learning that being successful requires. I love to learn new things, especially about this new hobby that I have only been involved with for a little over 1 year. I had a reasonably successful first year, no doubt in large part to the application of things that I learned through your videos and book. Knowing how to care for my bees properly is very satisfying. Thank you for the part you have played in my success!
You've inspired me to take on this challenge of being a beekeeper to help save the Bees. This will be the first Spring of ever having a hive I purchased two hives from a Local beekeeper here in Northern IL. Thank you Dave and Sheri for all you do.
I am new at beekeeping but not new to farming . I have read hundreds and hundreds of cattle horses pigs, goat sheep name it I’ve had it but I wish that I would’ve gotten into Bees 40 years ago. At 62. I cannot wait to see how we grow this business. It normally takes me two years to research my business before I get into it so here I am. truly, truly amazed with this little gift from God,
I lost my bees early this winter I believe they suffered from too many mites. It would have been my third winter. Trying to decide if I should jump right back in this spring or not. I know more about bees than before but much more to learn. Thank you
One thing that I've grown to really love about beekeeping is working the hives with my wife. She's a big gardener and we have adored the relationship we've been able to foster between the bees and the garden. She has become a pro and knows what to look for, how to handle frames, how to use the smoker, how to spot the queen, etc. I'm so proud of her, how hard she's worked this year, and the things we've tried and dove into this year in terms of hobbies that bring us joy and keep us sane. Extremely thankful for this incredible world of beekeeping.
Hi David, I like to watch your videos very much!!! What I love most about beekeeping that I learn more not only about bees, but about how important they are for humanity and how bees have influenced all world cultures. Bees are the most hardworking and self-sacrificing creatures I know.
Thank you for all of your videos, they are timely and informative. I especially appreciate your realistic advice on hive success and failures. Please keep them coming. 😊
And I thought I was just imagining this.. they really have come looking for me on several occasions, whenever the bird bath goes dry in the summer, and when the feeder goes empty in the fall.
I’ve been watching this channel for a couple years now. Even though I am not raising bees (yet), I can’t stop watching. At first I was following a number of channels which were each interesting in their own way, but this is the one I keep coming back to as the most diverse and educational.
I'm a disabled veteran with PTSD. There's a growing community of Veterans getting into beekeeping. I'm looking forward to getting into the (mostly) solitude hobby next spring.
First - THANK YOU David and Sheri for all the knowledge and work to share life experiences whether its about honey bees or family! Second - how to relate to bees in their environment to be successful year round. Third - over coming diversity whether bad or good and how it applies to life. Fourth - the HONEY! HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY!
I have gone full circle and now am a “minimalist”. I expand with swarms captured. I put supers on in the early spring and take honey and remove supers late summer. No treatment for mites, wax moths, or small hive beetles. Occasionally I feed honey back to original hive. Hive loss has become 0-20%. For me and my bees less is better.
I just love watching bees outside the hive. I love hearing the hive buzz too. It's that's to explain. I enjoy your videos because they are so informstive. I appreciate your dowb-to-earth, chatty way of presenting important informstion.
What I’m enjoying thus far is the connection with my 7 year old. Also learning the outdoor rhythm(patterns). April will be our 1st official year. He and I sat through classes together 2022. Thx for sharing your knowledge!
I'm a second year beekeeper. I most enjoy sitting in a comfy chair located hive-side and watching the bees' behavior as they enter and exit their hives. It's both relaxing and energizing at the same time. Thank you.
The thing I love most about beekeeping is the never-ending learning process and the wonder I experience each time I’m confronted by an issue I’ve hadn’t learned about yet. It’s such a humbling activity and being a beekeeper has also taught me more about myself.
I just got my first hive back in August. The thing I like most is just watching them fly in & out of the hive. Watch them on the buckwheat I planted for them & occasionally the nice visit from a curious one on my hand.
my first year I was so excited to see the new comb being made on the frames And when I saw eggs and larvae on these new frames !! How exciting that was It was so amazing . Im hooked ! love all your videos Really great useful information Enjoy watching all your videos and also the Live Stream on Thursdays
I love bees!!! I love watching them in the garden observing which flowers or herbs or trees they are drawn too. Last month we planted 22 more trees and I’m excited to expand my woods into a food forest, mushroom spores are started, even more flowers. Bees have expanded my thinking and desires for vegetation. Bees have awakened so much creativity in my heart. I’m not as good as you at expressing myself, I hope this makes sense.
This was my first year, I started with 1 hive and my friend had 2 on my property. We learned from each other, this really helped. I split my hive 2 times and caught 5 swarms in September and lost everything yet learned so much. The yellow jackets came by the thousands it was war. I have spent the last year studying queens and couldn’t believe it when you said what you said about queens at the beginning!!! I feel the same way:)) next year I will start with 3 hives and apply everything I’ve learned from you and first year life experience. Thank you for these wonderful videos💗🐝
I'm just getting started this coning spring, I'm excited to see the life cycle bees go through and the way they make honey and work as a colony , and I will really enjoy learning how to take care of them as I am doing in all of your videos. Thanks
I love just watching them work. I set and watch them a lot. I’m a new bee keeper and I’m learning. I’ve lost hives and swarms but I’m still hanging in there not giving up.
David, your idea of true succes at 10 years is great, but the bees will still teach you something new every time you inspect. The best quote I remember from reading, is “You must remember that you are a beginner for the first 20 years”, Eva Crane, Beekeeping Researcher & Author. Thanks for all you give us.
When I got my first hive I didn’t realize how mysterious and amazing they are!! I now am obsessed with them and wish I had started working and learning about them earlier in my life!!
As a first year bee keeper it's the experience of growing the hives. I loved adding empy frames this last season and watching the ladies draw out the comb with perfection. Thanks for all the information.
My first year we had two hives. They both died. Our second year we bought two more packages 15 swarm twice we caught one swarm and the other one got away. Now we have three hives and what has already died.
Thank you for your willingness to share your expertise. In the past I had severe allergies & used to live on Sudifed non-drowsy. When I began putting a tablespoon of raw local honey in my morning tea, it took about 2 months for Sudifed to no longer be a part of my life. Recently, I purchased a property where I can begin beekeeping & growing my own food/flowers to improve my & my family's health. Spending this next year improving my property so it is livable & researching beekeeping and agriculture before beginning a self-sustenance journey. Thanks again! 🥰
You are one of my favorite channels to watch about beekeeping. Because you give a lot of good information. I love beekeeping because I love the outdoors and the challenges of keeping them . And they help my food plots for hunting.
1st year bee keeping. Lost one of two hives. Your videos have helped me be confident that I'll be able to save my remaining hive and looking forward to spring. Will buy two more nucs and hopefully will be able to split my remaining hive. Thank you and Sheri's and Jessica's hard work.
Hi David, the thing I most enjoy about beekeeping are the constant challenges. Whether it be Varroa mites, SHB, learning to do splits or raising queens. The different challenges force you use your mind and keep you on your toes! I love it.
I have enjoyed beekeeping. I have just finished my second year of beekeeping! Im looking forward to my 3rd . I really appreciate what I have learned. Especially what I have learned from my failure with my first year and hive. I lost my first hive last winter extreme weather and excess cold. Thanks to David I learned a wonderful life lesson. I never understood it was ok to fail. He always says you learn more from our failures than our seccesse in life. We are better people beekeepers when we see our mistakes and make them right and share what we learn with others. Thanks David I appreciate you and your hand work for all of us!!! Keep it up.
It is a lot of work but it really relaxes me after a rough day .I guess the best thing getting into bees is all the bee people I have met has been fantastic
Our local beekeeper is going out of business, so I purchased some boxes from him. Now I’m beginning to educate myself before I get the actual bees… Great tips in this video and I’m ordering your book! Thank you!
I am starting bee keeping in spring 2024. I think I will like taking care of the bees and honey is a nice bonus although I don't expect any for the first year. I appreciate your passion and willingness to share your knowledge.
3rd year beek coming up and queen rearing is a project for this year. Have 20 hives 4 of which are nucs trying to get thru winter as resource hives so I'll be ready if a queen issue comes up this spring. Thanks for all the great help videos!
My first bees will come in May, 2024. I can't wait, this is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I have been studying for months, took a credit-free course from Michigan State and have learned so much from your videos. They are the first I look for. I am interested in raising queens and after watching your videos, I will be able to do it...understanding that I will lose bees. I feel comfortable knowing i have your videos if a problem comes along. Collecting swarms is also something I am very interested in. I live close to 2 state forests, 3 lakes and a little river 1/8 mi. away. I have apple trees, as do all the neighbors and farms, they grow wild along the road. I think this, with the flowers, is a perfect place. Again, thank you for all you do.
Did not know who to listen to. The ones pushing "natural" bee keeping and the ones who knew everything. The ones that said wait a few years before you learn to raise queens because you do not have enough experience. I needed to be listening to you.
I look forward to having my own colonies to learn from in the spring. I've been in a few helping another beekeeper but I am ready to learn from them regularly. I do intend to make and keep a couple nucs around to replace any losses and to have queens available. I intend to raise my own queens as well. I'm excited about being a beekeeper in every aspect.
My favourite part of beekeeping is being in a state of flow when you open a hive. Nothing else matters, your senses are heightened and you feel the presence of a higher power.
David, my wife and I just moved back to the States, and we’re lucky to be within an hour of my parents. My mother is retiring at the end of this year. Her and I are starting our first two hives together. The thing that I’m looking forward to most about beekeeping is the time that it’s going to give me with my mother. We are looking forward to seeing you in Louisville.
At 66 and after a couple of years of research I got my first hive this past July. The first thing I realized is a single hive has no insurance built into it. I've built another hive. Fingers crossed I'll be making 2 walk away splits. I'll put the original queen in a nuc, let the original hive raise a new queen. I'll also use one of the cells the riase a second queen in another nuc. My hopes are to have 2 hives and at least 1 nuc for queen insurance.
David, Your you tube videos are very helpful to me as a new bee keeper. I love that you are a clear and effective communicator and very honest about the good, bad, and ugly truths about bee keeping. Thank you for your help and keep up the good work. I love your videos.
Thank you for your kind comments!! I appreciate it.
Reason #1 for raising your own queens. comercial queens ARE inferior!
Raising your own does allow you to raise queens from your successful hives.
I am going to be starting for the first time this spring and I am really excited to see my own bees out in my garden enjoying all the flowers I planted for them and to add them to our homestead and create that much more sustainability for ourselves.

Caught my first swarm this year… hooked, lined, and sinkered❤!!!
Looking forward to starting up beekeeping, researching pointers to make it successful, no swarming , no mass die offs. Appreciate learning from different beekeepers on how to look after the bees.
Thanks and glad my videos can help you get rolling.
Thanks so much... this is all so helpful in helping me decide whether to move into beekeeping or not. I have the property, and now that I retired, have more time. But this is so multi-faceted, and I want to do a great job of caring for the girls!
So cool to hear.
David, I have learned so much from you from your talks on here. I love my bees. It has improved my mental health no end and you also have contributed to that. So thankyou
Love your videos! Very helpful for a first year beekeeper like me! You are my go-to guy for information and support, keep up the great work!

I like bees because it’s like having 20,000 angry little cows in a box 😂
I enjoy watching the bees. They are truly amazing! I enjoy learning all I can about keeping bees.
So true

I just love seeing life in my yard.

Teachers had it rough during the pandemic. I'm glad you found beekeeping helpful. It is so helpful for mental health.
Great sweater David! Thanks for another super video, and Merry Christmas to you and Sheri!
I enjoy watching your Videos. I've learned a ton so far. Thank you David 😊

Great video and tips for new beeks
Glad you enjoyed it
I just bought my first two hives on Black Friday.

that sweater is hideous and i love it. thanks dave for all you share.
Funny, it is a bit loud, but my personality is a bit loud 😄

This will be the first Spring of ever having a hive I purchased two hives from a Local beekeeper here in Northern IL.
Thank you Dave and Sheri for all you do.
My husband finds beekeeping more relaxing than anything else. Even with the highs and lows, he says he it's most satisfying hobby ever.
That is awesome! Good for him!
Great video.. I enjoy watching my colonies produce brood and grow their population.
That's awesome
Ty Hanna you for the videos. I really do want to learn to real queens!!! I would love to win this course!

Glad you think so!
How did u get that many queens mated? Or did u sell them unmated?
Sold them mated. I raised them.

I hope to learn about the whole process.
Thank you for all of your videos, they are timely and informative. I especially appreciate your realistic advice on hive success and failures. Please keep them coming. 😊
I really enjoy watching my bee's forage and come back to the hive packed full of pollen 😊
Me too!
I’m going to start beekeeping as a truck driver and hoping it all works out
I love the bees! One flew near me and asked me for more food after I ran out. It was wonderful.
Oh my gosh, ours do that too. They come and start tapping on the kitchen window where we eat breakfast. When they do that, I know they need more.
And I thought I was just imagining this.. they really have come looking for me on several occasions, whenever the bird bath goes dry in the summer, and when the feeder goes empty in the fall.

My favorite part of beekeeping is listening to the bees when they cover the flowering bushes around my house. The whole place vibrates.
Nice
You are one of my favorite channels to watch about beekeeping. Because you give a lot of good information. I love beekeeping because I love the outdoors and the challenges of keeping them . And they help my food plots for hunting.
I'm glad you enjoy my channel.
So happy to find your channel! Getting my first nucs in the Spring and I’m so excited!!
I’m glad you enjoy my channel. That’s so cool that you are starting in the spring. It is exciting!!
1st year bee keeping. Lost one of two hives. Your videos have helped me be confident that I'll be able to save my remaining hive and looking forward to spring. Will buy two more nucs and hopefully will be able to split my remaining hive. Thank you and Sheri's and Jessica's hard work.
That’s so nice of you to say!
I am amazed at how much I learn all the time about beekeeping and how much I still don't know but am also eager to learn.
That's me exactly!!!
Second year bee keeper and I really enjoy this hobby!!! I have made mistakes, but I am learning what not do and getting better on taking care of them!
That's a great attitude. Everyone makes mistakes.
Hi David, the thing I most enjoy about beekeeping are the constant challenges. Whether it be Varroa mites, SHB, learning to do splits or raising queens. The different challenges force you use your mind and keep you on your toes! I love it.
Good point!
Keep it up.
I appreciate you watching
It is a lot of work but it really relaxes me after a rough day .I guess the best thing getting into bees is all the bee people I have met has been fantastic
Yes, I've met some great people through beekeeping.
Great info. 👍 Thanks David and Sheri 😊
Thank you Brian!!
Our local beekeeper is going out of business, so I purchased some boxes from him. Now I’m beginning to educate myself before I get the actual bees… Great tips in this video and I’m ordering your book! Thank you!
Now you are committed!! Good for you. I'm glad you are working to educate yourself.
I am starting bee keeping in spring 2024. I think I will like taking care of the bees and honey is a nice bonus although I don't expect any for the first year. I appreciate your passion and willingness to share your knowledge.
You and so many more are starting for the first time in the spring. Good for you. You've got the right attitude.
I will like to be the winner once in life time… 😂 hello big squad… that is one of my goals queen reading.. I make the frame with the cup..
3rd year beek coming up and queen rearing is a project for this year. Have 20 hives 4 of which are nucs trying to get thru winter as resource hives so I'll be ready if a queen issue comes up this spring. Thanks for all the great help videos!
Thanks for watching
I love the christmas sweater!! Merry christmas to you and Sheri!
Thank you so much
I really enjoy watching how bees work together. BUT I only have one hive left from 4😢 very upsetting and frustrating.
Sorry to hear that. Beekeeping is also an opportunity to learn to go through frustrating situations and yet rise above them with perseverance
We are looking for to expanding our apiary and learning new skills
Awesome.
Sounds great and thanks for watching. Glad my videos have helped you.
Did not know who to listen to. The ones pushing "natural" bee keeping and the ones who knew everything. The ones that said wait a few years before you learn to raise queens because you do not have enough experience. I needed to be listening to you.
You have to learn sometime so just learn queen rearing as you learn about bees.
I'm excited to get started bee keeping next year! Ive been studying up and working on some horizontal hives
Good for you, and I'm glad you are putting in the time to prepare in advance.
Good luck!
First year beekeeper so I’m looking forward to a successful first over-winter, adding a 2nd hive and actually harvesting some honey.
Good luck!! And best of wishes.
My favourite part of beekeeping is being in a state of flow when you open a hive. Nothing else matters, your senses are heightened and you feel the presence of a higher power.
It does keep you in the present moment.
So great to do things like this with your mother. Good for you.
I enjoy learning and hope to have a hive in 2025 after shadowing a beekeeper in 2024
Thinking ahead!
Sounds like a plan
