These Drawers Were Full of Bees!

- A swarm of bees moved into this set of drawers and I was called to remove them! I always get the most excited for removals where I get to see the bees building in a place I've never seen them build before, so when I got the call that some bees moved into a set of drawers...it felt like Christmas! (Except it was nearly 100 degrees outside and I wasn't quite sure if I would find the queen!) I hope you enjoy this removal as much as I did. Thank you for supporting me and the bees!

@@ChasRiaStJohn I assure you, when beekeepers do things like that they always check the edge that will make contact with the box to make sure there’s no bees in the way. Yes in beekeeping some do get squished, but beekeepers are very careful not to squish them. After all, it just takes a couple bees getting agitated to stir the whole hive up

smoke masks the alarm pheromones and also the bees are a new colony and don't have much to defend

I grew up terrified of bees. Watching you save colony after colony, and being so respectful of everything about bees, has completely changed my mind about them. Thank you for saving the bees. After finding you, I’ve watched a bunch of bee vids. You are my favorite. So calm and kind. ❤
I am allergic to bee's, I have no choice but stay away. I also have to use bottles no cans of beverages if I am outdoors. Watch out with using sented shampoo especially flowered they are drawn towards them.

It seems impossible that you can go through that entire process and not get stung even once. I never really thought that bees were out to chase you down and sting you, but just being able to stick your hand blindly into the hive and scoop them out without them stinging you is simply remarkable.
Not really, stinging is a last resort for bees due to their stingers being barbed. Once they sting you, they have to literally rip themselves in 2 just to get off you because their barbs will stick in your flesh. They will only sting when the hive is being attacked usually
I've only recently begun studying bees, although my rural family and friends often kept beehives in their gardens and orchards. So I'm just going by what I've recently observed.
I'm planning to move some honeybees that made a hive in an abandoned nightstand or small chest left in a vacant lot. The hive would be okay where they are but passerbys keep harassing the bees and knocking over the hive. So I've been studying it for awhile to find a suitable location, away from this busy suburban boulevard and nearby apartment buildings.
Until the most recent incident when the hive box was knocked over I was able to approach very closely without the bees reacting. But now the guard bees come out when I'm within 10 feet.
As most beekeeper articles say, this hive appears to have a dozen or so guard bees whose primary job is guarding the hive. When I set the box upright again this week, about a dozen guard bees clung to my veil, gloves and upper body. As soon as I slowly moved away, gently brushing off the guards, most of the guards returned to the hive and didn't call out a swarm.
However there's one guard bee who's a little more assertive. Even when I was 10 feet or so away she flew out to smack against me and clung to my veil. I thought it was pretty funny. I imagined her going back to the hive with a pheromone brag about defeating the giant.
And when I walked by again the next day to check the hive, only a single guard flew out to me. She bounced against me a few times but didn't try to cling and sting. They seem to literally body slam themselves against perceived threats as a preferred defense, before committing themselves to a sting that's fatal to them.
I was concerned about avoiding provoking them into stinging, in order to minimize disturbing the hive. I didn't find any stingers in my clothing later.
Anyway, because it's been chilly here I've just worn my usual winter clothing, which is adequate protection against stings. I just wear a makeshift veil over my head, a camo net bag intended for turkey hunting, but works fine for bees.
It's possible if you go very slow. A lot of beekeepers don't have the time so opt to just use suits because they can't take a whole day to move a hive and smoke every 5 minutes. Not saying that she isn't good at what she does because she is amazing, but her secret is time and doing things incrementally slow.
Allegedly bees feel a lot more comfortable and less likely to sting when surrounded by other bees.
@@theparalexview785 A bodyslam as initial attack for bees makes a lot of sense, because any creature intimidated by bees will just immediately go "yo I'm out" at something like that.
A joy to watch someone be so pleased and excited upon finding the queen. God bless this beekeeper for loving their life's work and the animals they're saving.

@@aquibmohd Nope:) What she has is a strong bond towards bees, it takes alot of talent to be able to sense and read a bees emotions and body language. Notice how gentle and slow she is with the bees? and how she seems to scan the balls of bees? she is treating the bees with utmost respect, and reading the bees to make sure she is doing the right thing.

@@Bas_Lightyear You have to be respectful and gentle towards your bees, learn how to read their language, and respond appropriately.

I’d be so worried about accidentally crushing bees during this type of removal. Well done on the rescue! That was a super clean catch on the queen.

@@AlexanderBlumenaunot Erika. She moved very very slowly and avoided moving her feet too much or unnecessary. That's why the colony accepted her presence and didn't attack despite what she was doing with them. The only time she will move fast is to catch the Queen when she spotted it. Observe her movement a few more times and you will realized what she was doing is so precious

I think human body's can build a resistance to bee stings - the more you get stung.
The excitement when you saw the Queen was amazing! You grabbed the clip off your shirt without a second thought and caught her right away.
I don't think many people understand the magnitude of the effects that bees have on everything. Without them every living plant and animal on the planet (including humans) would perish. Bees are the pollinators who make life possible. Thank you for saving the bees and all of us 😍😍😍
Completely wrong, bees are really important for the ecosystem but their extinction would not perish the life of all animals and specially humans
Ground bees do 90% of the pollination not honey bees.

Honeybees are so nice. I’ve certainly never scooped them up, but I did have the opportunity to lay the back of my finger across a cluster of bees inside their hive. They were so soft and fuzzy and cozy; it was just an amazing feeling. They didn’t even seem to care that I was touching them!
Don’t they just feel so nice and soft! I love doing that when they visit the hummingbird feeders. Such an amazing thing to feel them.

I've seen her use more than one brood box for a removal, some of these colonies are huge!

You can tell by the way you look at them handle them and react when you find the Queen that you have a deep rooted care for these majestic creatures. You are doing work that many don't realise is so very important important to our ecosystem. And bees are also amazing.xx

Thank you for this video, you have such a fantastic opportunity to observe where and how honey bees situate themselves in unconventional cavities. I have the same questions for every bee removal, how large was the entrance they were using? Where were they going in? So much pristine white comb. They are incredibly calm, even so, I couldn't get away with that without a veil. I wish you all the best as you continue sharing your bee removal experiences. I guess since they didn't have brood yet, that explains their non-defensive behavior.

Most of us only encounter bumble, carpenter, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and ground bees. Solitary honey bees are also run into, we don't usually find a honeybee hive. So we don't really see them in action. Her videos are quite fun to watch and informative.

I have a small dairy farm. I also keep bees to pollinate my garden and fields. The honey taste great. This last Springi had a huge swarm of wild honey bees showed up next to my garage. So I got a empty hive and put it close by and put lemon grass in it. By evening the hive was full. I just moved it out by one of my fields where I had a hay field that the clover was starting to bloom.
I love watching you save the bees. I don't have any at this time. Maybe down the road. Just learning how is good for now.

You're bound to squish a few bees here and there when working with hives. It just happens.

You'll notice too, that she slightly moves the box she taps it. So she isn't tapping the box on top of bees.

I like bees (probably because I’ve never been stung). I’m so glad that there are brave people dedicated to protecting live hives for removal to safety because they are so very important for our planet
