Love to see someone still using that Gerber. I actually checked the date of the video before I commented. I've used the hell out of mine. Just beaten that thing to death. Been such a surprisingly good knife to me. Was looking at the Selkirk and ran across this video.

Yeah it's been good. I always liked the look and feel and never had a problem with the BG stuff.

One of the most comprehensive comparison videos I've ever watched.
I've been a collector for only a short time, something like 6 yrs. and this is a good video in my experience, that is across all products- electronics, hardware, all that crap. Thank you for taking the time and the hard work.

@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman I ordered the Selkirk a day ago after I watched your video and after putting off buying my first (user) fixed blade for a shamefully long time. I just really appreciated your no nonsense approach to comparison. I've been collecting for 5 years and all folders so I've watched a million videos about knives, yours just made too much sense and it was useful as hell. Thanks again.

@terrellbeast7369 I appreciate that brother. The Selkirk is a good one and I think you'll like it. Let me know how it goes.

Which I could get a replacement nighthawk here in the UK. The older one not the newer ones

I have one of these, I really like it, but I wouldn’t pound it through a hunk of wood, I carry a small hatchet in my bag if I’m going out for longer than a few hours or off trail.. Edges well, sheath is just ok.

I have been thinking of getting a Buck selkirk for years and years but still have not got one been looking at the smaller and folding versions also but I still don't have any. Great video.

After using other high-end knives, I always end up going back to my Selkirk. Despite the fact that it is made in China, it's still a Buck. Great comparison video!

Imported from where? Taiwan? China? BIG DIFFERENCE. Went to Amazon and I can find nothing on origin, I hate when a company hides the manufacture. That BG knife Im not a fan, I like the Bucks shape but imported? For $100 you can get USA made which I would lean towards. Nice camera set up VERY CLEAR

China. At least when I bought it. I payed 55 then. Supposedly US materials put together in China.

@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman They're never CLEAR on imports. If Japan or USA its stamped all over the place. China has never stepped up their game I think like Taiwan did. , where even SOG has knives made. Cold Steel also did the Taiwan thing and those knives have all doubled in value.

@@Baasicstuff This one is stamped China on the ricasso but hard to see on the video. I should have made that more clear.

The Grills knife is made of rubberized steel right?

I have the small fixed and folding versions. My Schrade old timer 169OT is similar in style so I didn't get the larger version. This is my level of knives. Bark river quality is way outta my budget.

Thanks for the review. I wonder how the knife community would view the Selkirk if it were built in the USA? The Selkirk is an awesome design but really suffers because of anti Chinese sentiment which I understand and a big knife manufacturer going to a communist country in order to dominate a price point. I don't think that strategy worked. I really like my Selkirk though.

Yeah Mark, I'm kinda thinking along those lines also. I do enjoy the knife as it is well done.

I actually pulled the trigger on it. I did some post-purchase searching and turned up that it was made in China, priced in the US at less than half of what I paid for it in the UK, and several instances of bad steel / heat treatment resulting in the blade snapping or shattering easily. I cancelled the order pretty quick on principle (they lied on the description) and it seems I've ended up ordering a UK made blank to make my own. Just a shame it won't have a flat pommel.
I still think the Selkirk looks like a nice knife, I really like the design. Not many decent knives have a good pommel, fewer where it's a flat pommel that's one piece with the blade.

Still would probably use an ax to split wood rather than a knife just saying.
