The Spanish came to annihilate our Indigenous culture and instilled in us the feeling that our brown-ness is inferior to their whiteness. So I don’t agree in bringing back the Spanish language in the school system. If anything, we should develop subjects that focus on Indigenous culture, language, and history.

MMD used “Filipinas” because they did a SPANISH alphabetical order of countries, in which the “Philippines” is translated to “Filipinas.” It was NOT MMD’s choice and it’s NO big deal. It was not like she was being extra patriotic or that she insisted on using a name other than the “Philippines.” It’s the Spanish way of alphabetizing things.
