They chased off the Gen X parents, and their expendable income. Oh, yeah. They lost the Gen X kids they were bringing with them to all the movies. They chased us away from comics as well. They lost me, they lost my wife and kids. That's a lot of tickets across the board.

They lost even us older Gen Xers with no kids who liked animation and superhero movies, and bought a figure or piece of merchandise here and there. And to think all they had to do was live action adapt those films. MORONS. Just like all Star Wars had to do was adapt the most popular Expanded Universe stories recasting the principals if necessary but offering a frame or a one off movie for them.

It's what most fans want, for the direct to video animated movie division to take over direction on the live action movie division of DC. Executives there were literally asked about doing this and they just said no, they weren't going to do that.
I'm a Snyderverse lover, but what I've seen of the DCAU, I'd welcome them taking over (I've still got a lot I need to watch; I loved Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay).

I loved the Death of Superman movie, as well as the Reign of the Supermen movie. Although, I do have to point out that's it's easier for animated, straight-to-home-video movies than live-action, theatrical films. DC Animated can do The Death of Superman, and fans of the comic will snatch it up, already knowing the history and even the story. Theatrical films are made for a much larger audience, so to do Death of Superman in live-action, there would have to be a number of movies building up to that event. You can't kill Superman after just one film, as we saw in Batman v Superman. It just doesn't work; it doesn't feel earned in terms of the story. So, there's much more freedom in adopting stories in the animated movies.

Filmmakers are not obligated to follow the comics 100%, cause what works in a comic book doesn’t translate well to the big screen. Look at films like Capt America Civil War & Logan both films aren’t completely comic accurate yet they are considered some of the best CBM and you have things like Watchmen which is faithful to the source material and a lot of people disliked it.

But the poor thinking skills of current creators leads me to believe these things that I've cherished for half a century, may never be readable or watchable again. It's clear that without clearing out the rot, and deliberately teaching the next generation of creators, logic, reason, and the legitimate writing process, nothing except the odd anomaly can be expected to be worth time and price. I think the big turnoff is that the new generation of writers and artists whether subconsciously or intentionally are now much more familiar with the film counterparts of the characters they're writing or drawing than they are the decades plus history that existed long before the MCU ever even existed. Used to be someone like Geoff Johns writing the Avengers and admitting he'd never even read the book prior to taking on the job and bombing was seen as the outlier, but these days its more likely the norm whether or not these same people want to admit it...

I wouldn't necessarily call the super hero craze dead. What do all these flops have in common? They all push content that the audience does not want and/or characters/talent that the audience does not want. Another attribute that one could argue is that the producers of these movies have communicated that the content does not matter in relation to the content that the audience DOES want. The DC reboot is a great example of that as they nothing short of told the audience that all these movies before the reboot would not matter and the characters we wanted like Cavill's Superman were going away entirely. Fact is that IF they were producing content the audience wanted then the train might still be chugging along. They made the mistake of burying the characters people wanted and have yet to provide a reason why we should care about the characters they're trying to push with their identity politics and otherwise social engineering.

    • @muigokublack6487
      @muigokublack6487 ปีที่แล้ว +22

It's all for the sake of pushing "The Message". Also in The Flash's case it's a dead continuity because it's all gonna get rebooted anyway so why watch and the only people who are going to watch it are seeing it for the return of Micheal Keaton's Batman.
These films are failing because they're pushing shit the audience doesn't want and the audience is leaving in response. The first three phases of the MCU were successful because they stayed true to the characters and respected their legacy. They've abandoned that now and look what happened.

Super Hero Films failed when the villains became forgettable nobodies, now the heroes stand for representation, not for world justice. It happened when the characters became lame activists instead of badass heroes. When the genre was no longer about strength and fun powers, but political issues where the powers are generic and boring/unimportant.
They discarded the fascination with Super Heroes: Unique and out of this world powers. As a kid I adored X-Men and Fantastic 4 movies, there was so much focus on just their powers and the many fun and creative possibilities they could come up with.
I remember scenes of Mr Fantastic slipping his hand under a thin gap beneath a metal door, or his cartoony dance moves. Spiderman discovering his powers for the first time, being amazed by how he could climb a wall.
I also adored the horrifying side effects: The Thing dealing with how his powers have turned him into a monster. Rogue struggling to be intimate with anyone. Clark Kent having to hide his super strength, letting his father die or be picked on to hide it.
The original Super Man movies will always be classics because they too had fun moments of young Clark Kent trying out super speed for the first time, discovering that he can fly. The scene where he takes Lois Lane flying is still so romantic and wonderful.
Super Hero films *used* to explore how fantastic these powers are, you could imagine how great it must be to have such power.
That wonder is lost entirely in modern Marvel and DC, it's all just cosmic threats that plan to destroy all of earth and the heroes just fly around and punch eachother for actions sake. CGI just isn't impressive anymore and I feel like I'm watching a cutscene from a game, not a mind blowing effect or out of this world adventure.
Practical effects in classic Super Hero films are pure magic. They make you say "HOW DID THEY DO THAT?!" you just don't get that anymore when it's clearly just a computer generated animation 😴

I am always there on day one… of the streaming release. I have a few health issues, and getting to the cinema/ theatre is problematic.
I have been a comic book fan (mainly Marvel and DC) for almost fifty years, and have always dreamed of seeing the heroes on the big screen, in decent movies, with great effects. It is a great time for me to be alive.
One thing I fail to understand, though: CGI costs seem to be skyrocketing, but they are not getting better - in many cases, they are getting worse. Why? And why bother with CGI, when many effects can be done practically, at a fraction of the cost? I don’t need special effects that blow me away. I just need them to be “believable”. Take, for example, a modern space battle. Lots of CGi, with ships, background, explosions, etc. Then look at Star Wars (the original, from 1977, before it became “A New Hope”. The final battle is all done with miniatures, and the effects added by hand. Now, I would go with CGI for the explosions, weapons fire, etc, these days, but even then, the end results are fantastic. Oh, and backgrounds. CGI these days. Back then, matte oil paintings on glass. Can you tell the difference? With 8k screens, yeah, OK. But it is still “believable”.
I think, if “Hollywood” wants to survive, they need to take a look at where they throw their money, and when to use different types of effects. Soon, movie production will be so expensive that, in order to recoup their costs, ticket prices are going to have to be jacked up even higher, and the industry will self-implode under its own costs.
And nobody wants that ( or do we?). Cinema is one of many important parts of our culture - we gather in groups of strangers, to enjoy a shared experience, which becomes another part of our collective experience. It would be a shame if it were to end.

This is the first time I can think of that studios are actively trying to resuscitate a dying movie trend and we are seeing it in real time. It used to be that, in the past, when a genre of film was on the wane be it musicals, westerns, or slashers, studios would simply let it die and continue to make movies until the next trend comes around. Now it seems like the studios are desperate to keep the superhero film genre going as it is dying. It’s as if superheroes is the last quick buck theater packer to exploit and there’s nothing left.

Superhero Movies have had a good run, but after their Decade of Dominance, I can’t say I’m sad to see them going the way of the Western for a while. Are they Dead Dead, no - we’ll probably still get some, but nowhere near at the rate we have been.
Also I think Marvel pushing everything back a year is going to bite them hard - the MCU’s greatest strengths were Continuity, and how Consistently they put out new movies. Yeah, as a series it peaked with Endgame, but the year+ delays in new content because of Covid didn’t do them any favours. Delaying a year again because -checks notes- theres a writers strike (full honesty, if you were to tell me Marvel movies were written by an AI I’d believe it they’re that formulaic) isn’t going to do them any favours as far as catching that lightning again.

Superhero films can avoid this, if marvel listens to all the negative feedback it’s had for the past two years and start making more unique movies that branches off from their typical style of filmmaking, they could have staying power

Marvel keeps making films and TV shows that for some reason aren't The Fantastic Four or The X-Men, which is all anyone is waiting for. Neither studio is making anything audiences are asking for. For some reason, they just keep giving us the dross they want us to want.
If Marvel gives us a quality Fantastic Four, and a terrifying Galactus, the tide will turn. If DC revisits the Green Lantern Corps and doesn't mess it up, they'll become worthy, viable competitors.

Since the 2016 all-girl Ghostbusters...whatever the hell that was Hollywood has gotten VERY political and doesn't feel right unless they're jamming propaganda or social programming into their works, part and parcel to that they also have not only alienated fans they've actively attacked them and the characters themselves to hone their message for the maximum effect of "I hate everything and everybody in our society and I'm going to change or destroy it all!"
They're getting their wish, the fans have run for cover and it's turning into a culture war that Hollywood is losing,no fans equals no profit, the average person ain't gonna go see Star Wars,Marvel,DC or any of the others if their geek friends are telling them to run away.
So get a tombstone this whole thing is going to die off,we may go back to the odd film every few years like in the 80's or to none at all, with maybe some shoddy made for TV (or now streaming) junk.

I am a superhero fan, from comics to the films and even some of the cartoons: Batman the Animated Series.
The largest mistake made by DC was to attempt to 'combine' their heroes into one film TOO SOON. We had barely met the new Wonder Woman when suddenly she was going to battle with Bats and Supes - yes they are the BIG 3 of DC - this was too fast. The dark Superman was idiotic. Cavill was an awesome casting choice and unlike what James Gunn has put out ther I think audiences ARE capable of ignoring what was something silly or unwanted and take on a new vision of the character with the same actor. I would love to have seen a World's Finest with Bat and Supes, or a better start up for the Justice League, possibly coming on after two World's Finest films. They had SOOOO MUCH great material to work with from the 50+ years of comics and they chose to go with the 'multiverse' stuff that came at the end of a great run - I HATED the 1990s all-crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, and stopped almost all my subscriptions as that train wreck happened.
This multi-verse stuff in the films is the same energy that I did not like from the Crisis comics - you do that at the END, when you plan to re-start EVERYTHING.
So, I say that they have ended.
I'll have to see a good review before I bother paying for another movie ticket for any super-hero film.
I'll have to see Dizney in flames before I bother paying any more attention to any of the great fiction properties they have mangled.
There are only 3 Indianna Jones films, only 6 Star Wars films and Star Trek ended with Generations.

  • @theflash9767

This video essay provides a thought-provoking analysis of the current state of the superhero genre. It's interesting to reflect on the evolution of these films, especially when we consider the superhero films of the 90s and early 2000s. During that era, we witnessed a diverse range of storytelling and character development, from the campy yet endearing "Batman & Robin" to the introspective and gritty "Blade" series.
The superhero genre has indeed seen its share of gems that dared to push boundaries and defy the conventional superhero narrative. Films like "Logan", "Batman v Superman", and "The Incredible Hulk" offered a darker, more complex perspective on our beloved heroes. The Dark Knight trilogy, in particular, set a new standard for superhero films with its mature themes and intricate character arcs.
However, it's worth noting that the landscape has changed significantly over the years. Marvel/Disney's approach, for instance, has shifted towards a more socially conscious, or as some would say, "woke" narrative. While this has led to more diverse representation, it has also sparked debates about the authenticity and intention behind these changes.
Moreover, the current trend seems to favor a more formulaic, "cookie-cutter" approach to superhero films. This is perhaps a result of studios being less willing to take risks due to the high stakes involved in terms of budget and box office expectations.
On the other hand, DC continues to take creative risks, often resulting in a more varied and unpredictable slate of films. Whether this approach is more successful or appreciated than Marvel's is subjective and largely depends on individual viewer preferences.
In conclusion, while the superhero genre may be experiencing a decline in popularity, it's important to remember that it has always been cyclical. Just as the golden age of superhero films in the 90s and early 2000s gave way to a new era, so too could the current trend pave the way for another evolution of the genre. Only time will tell what the future holds for our caped crusaders and masked vigilantes.

I think big budget comic book movies need to take a hiatus. Spider-Man, Blade, X-Men and Batman were all successful in the 90's and 2000's because they were actual cinematic events and you didn't have 5 marvel movies coming out each year. The films all had their own unique style and had actual effort put into them. But nowadays there's a superhero movie coming out every other month, which worked briefly for Marvel when building up to Infinity War, but now nearly all superhero movies look and feel exactly the same. So I think the genre for right now belongs on TV, which can tell the same stories with lower budgets and more manageable pacing and only having creatively unique movies like Joker, No Way Home, and The Batman (all financial successes) releasing periodically until enough interest drums up again in big event films.

Shang-Chi, Ms Marvel, Monica Rambeau, America Chavez, Namor, Echo, & big-bads Valentina de Fontaine & Kang!
As for DC, they should have established a cinematic premise of The Multiverse a LONG time ago and people would have been so much more open to the movies not referencing one another like the MCU did.

Super Heroes aren't dead but Marvel & DC may as well be, both in the comics and movies. Most normies haven't heard about "My Hero Academia" yet and I kind of prefer it that way. Going mainstream is a sign to political opportunist that you are officially a 'platform' worth corrupting.

Used to show up to see a Movie or two early into it's run time, Generally within the first or second week, but its' been getting more and more 'No' over the years, not from Superhero Fatigue, I don't believe that it's a thing. But 'Bad/Preacher Writhing' that is in pretty much everything. TH-cam Bloggs like yours and Gaming videos from others are more entertaining since they actually just have good amounts of information, and entertainment that's not telling me to respect Pronouns, and figure out several different reasons why I'm apparently a bad person cause I somehow offended someone by saying 'Hello' in a tone they didn't appreciate. You work in retail for a bit, you start to become numb to it during hours, and when you get home or are looking for entertainment, you 'DON'T' need that to have 'Fun' and it just makes the experience feel terrible. So thanks to channels like you guys WCB for giving me something to listen too while I trail off into my games, my own art, my work, and keep going as you do Fam.

How did CGI become MORE expensive? The cost of every other endeavor requiring computational power has gone down with time, but CGI costs have gone up while the quality has also gone down.

The studios are blissfully unaware of a thing called over-saturation. Or maybe more cynically, well aware and exploiting less and less discriminating audiences. Having an X-Men movie come out every couple of years, or Spiderman one summer then Batman the next left fans of the genre wanting more and anticipating the next film. Now there’s 12 movies and TV shows simultaneously all begging for attention and referencing each other to appease the übernerds. I don’t want to have to consult a spreadsheet timeline to see if I’m watching a show in the correct universe’s timeline order. I don’t even want to have to watch half of these pseudo-important characters because some reference is made to them in another show. The writing is being grotesquely watered down across all of these titles instead of amalgamating the interesting developments and plots into one or two better quality titles. Now they’re filling two hours of space with slow-witted “heroes” taking half the movie to figure out what the audience had deduced within three minutes then filling out the remaining time with “Things Keep Exploding! Parts 278,291-278,786.” It’s dreck, but the studios don’t care because they know they have the fanbois by the ‘nads who will watch anything with the brand logo on it out of completionist OCD mindlessness.

Nope. That last superhero film I saw was Black Panther in 2018 and that was an okay movie. And I really can't think of any modern movie I'm interested in seeing this year or beyond that.

First of all the 1942 Superman is my favorite!! The S shield looks awesome. I wish it stayed that way. Also you make some good points but I disagree on some. I don’t think the superhero craze is dead. For example: for a long time fans(including me) have been begging for a Man of Steel 2 & Justice League 2(both Snyder cut obviously). If DC made those two films they would’ve made a ton of money. Bring back Henry Cavill and fire Ezra Miller. Simple. Plus look at the popularity of Spider-Man 2 PS5. The Fanbase will pay money to see superhero movies with decent good stories for all ages. No disgusting political messages(and of course no actors with a criminal record lol 😂).

WB may as well shut down their DC film efforts before it costs them even more money. The reputation of the brand with mainstream audiences is in the toilet. Even if somehow James Gunn produces good DC movies in the future, it won't change things. And it doesn't help that people are sick of superhero movies at this point. The basic fact is DC almost completely missed the superhero gravy train (which should just be called the Marvel gravy train since it was the only superhero universe that succeeded)

Fox X-Men did pretty well. Sony Spider-Man as well. Fox only went on the rocks after the acquisition by Disney. Sony made money on every Spider-Man movie.

    • @fattiger6957

@@exhaustguy Fox's X-Men was so uneven. The first two were good, but those were before the MCU boom. Then afterwards it was hits and misses. Seems like more misses than hits.
I'm not sure what to think of Spider-Man. The recent live-action movies are certainly tied to the MCU, so I can't separate them. The Andrew Garfield movies had problems and were abandoned by Sony. The Spiderverse movies you can definitely say are independent successes.

    • @exhaustguy
      @exhaustguy ปีที่แล้ว

@@fattiger6957 There were Phase 1-3 movies that were also not very good (Dark World, Iron Man 2 (and I would argue 3), Ultron (better in hindsight after rewatching but disappointing where first released), and Hulk. The fish out of water Thor scenes were a bit awkward in Thor 1, but Asgaard scenes were great. I thought your statement was about profitability, and Fox and Sony have done very well in that regard (far better than WB with DC outside of Batman).

They made so much money that politics and infighting took the priority. Kevin Feige is the worst of them all. He was the frontman of the producers, because he was the biggest geek, but he was hardly the father of MCU, that would be Ike Perlemutter, CEO of Marvel Entertainment. They had good results with movies, but they fought over everything. Feige made his move and with help of Disney CEO Bob Iger he split Marvel Studios (movies) from the rest of marvel and started reporting directly to Disney in 2015 and took over creative control in 2019. They pushed smearing campaign to remove any chance of Ike fighting back. Funniest thing is Feige and Iger portraying Perlmutter as racist, (blocking diversity) good old woke talk. In reality Perlemutter was crucial in creating Blade in 2018 lol.
Now we all see the results of full creativity of Kevin. Nobody can challenge him, or gave him any feedback. He was surrounded only by yes men and women like Alonso. Don’t be mistaken, she was doing everything with his approval. She was then fired as a scapegoat to cover for him hehe. Every project announced after 2015 is a child of Feige, great job Kevin. At least nobody will accuse us of being sexist when the entire fandom finally will understand who is to blame.

I think Deadpool 3 will prove it isn't so much superhero fatigue as it is fatigue of piss poor writing and planning, injected personal politics that feel forced, emasculation of male roles, mary sues, ignorance of source materials, etc. etc. all of this is easily fixed and I have no idea why it wasn't (although I can guess that it might start from the bottom but be the choices of management ie: hiring quota vs hiring talent, birth of the wage slave [work till you quit or performance drops then get replaced by someone cheaper], cutbacks that create poor working conditions for 10s or 100s so that 2-3 people at the top can take a nicer bonus home)
All that being said DP3 still has a possibility to fail due to poor writing or CGI (Like Wolverine origins)

I went and saw The Flash today. I enjoyed it; will probably buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out. I didn't follow the actress' legal troubles; frankly, I don't care about them. I was entertained, not as much as the Super Mario Bros. movie, but it was what I excepted. I wanted a 'turn my brain off' action movie, and that's what I got. Now, that being said, I'm not gonna run out and see every superhero movie that comes out; I've only seen about 4 or 5 of the Marvel movies. First Avenger and Ironman was ok, I was indifferent to Morpheus and did not like Captain America: Civil War one bit. But this movie, I enjoyed.

Spidermans (no way home) is the only marvel movie I've seen on a big screen since Endgame. I fell asleep trying to watch Dr Strange 2 and black panther 2. Both of which didn't star the titular character... at least as much as I did stay awake for.
