    *DUNE 2021 Review on Paul Atreides Destiny* vs in the book Paul doesn't have a free choice when he realized having gotten addicted to the spice he & Jessica could NOT just up and leave without some access to further spice to ingest, [also possibly the Bene Gesserit PLAN when they had Harkonnen & Atreides circling the Arrakis planet to end up ruling and having genetic bred children there for the Fremen to worship]. *In the book Jamis calls out to fight Paul NOT Stilgar or Jessica* , due to his being humiliated embarrassed and beaten by a boy Paul. Paul HAD TO FIGHT/Kill Jamis then becomes responsible for Jamis family afterwards. Denis movie removes all of that and makes it Paul having a choice. Completely changes the underlying message that we cannot control everything(choice) unless we fully understand and Paul never did til it was too late, only After he took the water of life to finally have the full sight.
    Denis half makes it Paul has no choice by clearly said Stilgar states by killing Jamis Paul has tied himself to the tribe=no choice, Thus the script makes no sense Jessica suddenly begging for Paul to be released to leave contrary to what was just stated and shown JUST to modern mentality imply Paul has a choice. The real story by Herbert he has said time again in interviews That good intentions and righteous moral intentions can easily lead to vast justified evil and wrongs. What looks ethical at the beginning thru blind adherence can lead to later atrocities.

      I always understood from reading the books that the major houses all had their own supply of Spice that they used daily, certainly not enough to to have the eyes of Ibad even after years of use but certainly for the life extending and mental advantages. We only see Dr Yueh give Paul spice in his room, once, in Lynchs' version.
      So in a way everyone has some level of addiction or use of Spice. It's everywhere. 😎

    The three major lessons of Frank Herbert's Dune:
    1. Manage your resources and take care not to screw around with the environment.
    2. Church and State should be serperate.
    3. Don't take drugs when you are pregnant.

      Frank Herbert's message was an examination of the responsibilities and burdens of leadership, especially in terms of politics. I've read every word Frank Herbert wrote, and that is an important concern of his. I attended a talk of his in the 80's. He asked, in respect to his message in Dune, 'What makes people follow someone to the jungles of Guyana and drink poisoned Kool-aid?' He was referring, of course, to Jim Jones who told his followers to kill themselves en masse, and they did. Paul Atreides spent the whole book trying to extricate himself (and the universe) from the jihad he saw in his prophetic visions. He failed. There was a jihad and billions of people died. His son, the God Emperor, spent about 3500 years trying to break humanity from Paul's vision that locked humanity on a particular course. You can argue that the end result of the maturing of humankind is good. But billions of people died. Thus, the burden of leadership weighed heavily on Paul.

    After reading the books I was so sorry for Alia. All she needed was to be with her loved ones. As much as she was powerful, she was consumed by her powers because of being abondoned by her loved ones. I don't think she would be like that if Jessica didn't leave her after Paul is gone. But everyone was prejudicing her since she was born. At least at the end her mother understood she was just a victim and she still loves her.

      Just finished reading it two nights ago and into God Emperor now. I noticed that too. It's very striking that the only person she can really turn to is an ancestral ego locked inside her own head and the one she chose is the man she killed as a child. Hit deep by the end. The Bene Gesserit and Jessica forgot their litany and created the very thing they were afraid of. Crazy how quickly Alia's descent was exacerbated when she finally returned. Some real emotional damage there.

It is her fault that Alia had pre born knowledge and left vulnerable to being taken over. Look how Chani nearly desired to take her daughter over. Alia niece. Her mother probably could have helped her to navigate this horribleness.

      @@klyanadkmorr Oh yes, and of course the transformed Leto with all his powers. Jessica does have a lot to feel guilty for, though. Not just abandoning Alia, but for using the Bene Gesserit's propaganda to manipulate the Fremen for her (and Paul's) own needs. As the old Reverend Mother said "When religion and politics ride in the same cart, the whirlwind follows." The Fremen Jihad caused the death of billions across many worlds. I have to wonder, too, how Liet (a planetary ecologist) failed to realize that the transformation he advocated would destroy the desert, the worms, and ultimately the only resource the Fremen had - the spice. Maybe the books covered this better and maybe his vision was actually for more limited change. Of course, Leto ultimately wanted the desert destroyed - it was necessary for his Golden Path.

      So fully tired of the Jessica BLAMES GAME going on as THERE WOULD BE NO PAUL NOR ALIA if Jessica had NOT TAKEN THE WATER OF LIFE or fought off Stilgar, their Fremen sentence WAS DEATH. The thing is Alia NEVER ASKED HER MOTHER TO STAY once Paul gained power fully Fremen Rev Mother transferred to Harah & later Blind Paul left. The only blame is OUT OF ?SELFISH LOVE OF HER PARTNER DUKE LETO she had a son first. THAT IS A TRAGEDY SAD not a childish blame hate game that Alia devolves into. Do you see Ghanima or LetoII hating on Paul & Chani forcing them into Prescience? Just so they could have another child? NO they are MATURE and access the past to understand to full situation of why they came about! Alia had a personality with/out prescience that was similar to the Baron her grandfather such she ALLOWED him access to protect her otherwise she'd have probably grown up with a mild manipulative and power hungry bent without being preborn and twisted by the Baron.
      Alia was all wrapped up in being the new Regent Emperor and only asked Duncan to stay by her side. IMHO how could anyone have realized how unstable Alia was when she was running around leading so well and kept everyone at a distance trying to look perfect(I am the Rev Mother & holy with all Rev Mother memories bow to me Bulls#) like as if she was like Paul. Only her niece/nephew could pick up on it early and Jessica only AFTER being alerted of the drastic things happening on Arrakis and reports of Alia's new behavior. Alia was too far gone by then.

It just ended up rushed to an ending not written yet, unlike Dune has been. Unlike Lucas with his Star Wars openly ripping off DUNE and denying it, GRRM has paid homage and honors Herbert's work by adopting allegories to his ASOIAF works which uses many resources from lord Rings to Love Craft & PUBLICLY ADMITS HONORS doesn't lie his twins come from both Dune/Star Wars use in fantasy but taken to extreme conclusion of possible sexual intimacy relations by womb siblings.

    Minor quibble. This scene establishes that Alia and her cohorts, know full well that terra-forming Dune is fatal to the worms. Yet, Alia, openly, and unwisely, admits that this is intentional, and the end goal is so that they have a corner on a very scarce and desirable commodity. This is strange when you consider Spice already IS the most valuable, and scarce commodity in the universe even before they hatched this plan of theirs. It is even more puzzling when you consider that Alia and her house , are the rulers of the Imperium, and they rule from Dune, which means, yea, they already control spice production, so....why try to kill off the worms again? How much more power and wealth does Alia need anyhow?
    Shes a super-human herself, ruler of the Dune universe(ok regent but still), and, rules from the planet that make everything go around in their world(s)......

      To expand a little on my opening point, Alia trys to silence the Naib and says 'these are matters of state', IE, not a matter for open discussion, much less debate. Then inexplicably, she follows that statement, literally minutes later, by letting the cat completely out of the bag with her admission about her plans for the worms. Sooooo, talking about the fate of the worms is a matter of State, but, telling everyone in the room, that she is conspiring to make it difficult for worms to survive except in very limited numbers, is not. Ok...

      @klyanadkmorr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It's fiction paralleling reality of despot & tyrants, it's nice you morally say it is not okay in the comments. Alia is a character written as power mad gone insane by abomination, and reallife power mad persons with the means care not if they spill the beans admit the dark deeds they do because they don't believe anyone can stop them. That level of madness and evil cares less if their public image or public opinion is damaged.

    • @dkseraph
      @dkseraph 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      it also bears mentioning that at this point Alia is nearly entirely under the persuasive power of the spirit of her grandfather, Baron Harkonnen. Alia might not see the destruction of the worms as the destruction of Atreides rule but that most certainly is the true intent of Baron Harkonnen. He is manipulating her fear, insanity, and lust for power to wreck a final revenge upon House Atreides and the children of Muad'dib.

Frank Herbert's message was an examination of the responsibilities and burdens of leadership. Paul's quest to take back Arrakis from the Harkonnens led inexorably to a jihad that killed trillions of people. You can argue that the outcome was worth it, but that is a non-trivial number of people killed because the Fremen were following a charismatic leader. Paul spent all of his time in the Dune books trying to extricate himself from his vision and the jihad, to no avail. Lynch really didn't touch on this wrenching agony that Paul Atreides lived with. Frank Herbert wrote that it was difficult to tell if his eyes were blue or green. Momoa is tall, brown skinned, wavy brown hair, high cheekbones with what can be described as cave-sitter eyes. His eyes are green but it's difficult to tell if they're green or light brown. Duncan is a sword master of the Ginaz. Momoa has practiced sword fighting extensively for some of his movies. He had a sword fight in Aquaman and it was impressive. At Villenueve's request, he shaved his iconic beard for the movie (which mostly upset his leagues of fans). Now that the filming of his part is complete, he's growing it back. Duncan is about 35 in the book, Momoa is 39. He pretty much fits the general physical parameters of Duncan Idaho. Momoa is very tall. There is no mention of Idaho's height in Dune. From reading all six of Frank Herbert's books, there is some indication that he's tall but that's it. (I don't consider any of the dreck Brian Herbert has written as reliable source material for Dune. I swear, the way he betrays his father's ideas you would think he doesn't like him.) Momoa fits the description better than Richard Jordan in Lynch's movie. I like Richard Jordan, but he didn't fit the description of Idaho at all. I think Momoa's acting is equal to the task. As to Brolin, I don't have a strong opinion either way. However, I believe he will be a better Gurney Hallack than Patrick Stewart. I love Stewart, but he was very wooden in Lynch's Dune. This is probably because of Lynch. He is not an actor's director. Kyle MacLaughlin suffered from lack of adequate direction as well. What a mess that movie was. I'm disappointed in a number of the casting decisions the Villeneuve has made, but Jason Momoa is not one of them. You should give him a chance.

Since you are a composer then you hopeful will love the soundtrack by a award winning composer who is a young John Williams in his grasp of orchestra and depth of themes, instruments and melody. Brian Tyler deserves better films than the MCU Avengers/Transformer movie he moved to later on. The composer for Game of Thrones kinda copies Tyler's style if you listen, imo but it's fantasy derived Middle Eastern/N.African/Indian Mediterranean in spirit.

    Alice Krige stepped into the role of Lady Jessica and owned it. Saskia Reeves played Jessica in the first mini-series and was just awful. Replacing her with Krige was a smart move, but they should have cast her in the first mini-series. She always carries a great presence in any production she's in.

      Alice Krige was originally cast to play Jessica in the first DUNE mini series but her schedule couldn't allow her to so that's why Saska Reeves got the role. Saska wasn't horrid but was similarly weak like the new actress in the DUNE 2021 is weeping and crying every second unlike a strong Bene Gesserit. Even the somewhat geeky Lynch Dune actress had a sense of regal power of a BG Sister. ITA Krige owns Jessica Atriedes portrayal the best.

    • @HarmonyEdge
      @HarmonyEdge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I kinda feel both of them consistently portayed Jessica at those points of her life. Saskia being the younger, impulsive(giving birth to a son, truly loving Leto), elegant BG, while Alice is the older, more mature, desert and battle hardened fremen. It actually makes me a little unsure if either actress can play the othet's specific role i.e. if Saskia can be as harsh as Alice, of if Alice can be as tender as Saskia.
      It also just happened that they don't look alike enough to prevent the shift from looking a little too jarring.

      @@klyanadkmorr Of course, the incomparable Siân Phillips as Helen Gaius Mohiam in the Lynch Dune was just the best IMHO. She'd had will to (among other things) seduce the Baron Harkonnen in order to produce Jessica. Small wonder that she was so furious with Jessica for betraying her duty and having a son instead of a daughter. Paul was supposed to marry Harkonnen's half-brother's son Feyd-Ruatha (Paul's own first cousin) and then have a son who would be the likely Kwisatz Haderach.

    • @klyanadkmorr
      @klyanadkmorr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some obviously didn't understand plants would start to grow crazy or it was deadly to the worms. It wasn't until late into Kynes research found after his death and Paul/Leto thru presience started to see the worm, little makers, spice blows and water wells disappearing connections - Alia kinda sensed it while pushing the terraforming changes. That the full worm cycle producing the spice needing a no water planet was not understood until Paul, Alia & Ghanima/Leto. How much no one understood the cycle for centuries is one aspect I think Frank could have explained better.

      klyana130 I think Kynes was sent to Arrakis to park him in a dead end job. If water on planet=clouds and water plus ground=plants were unknowns to him then he couldn't have been the best planetologist the Empire had. For the Fremen I have to assume they thought they would transform the planet into mud.

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Fremen really didn't understand that process, though, or that that sort of thing would or could happen. They had been on Arrakis for a very long time prior to the original Dune (I think at least a couple thousand years), and before that they planet-hopped just to end up there. There was plenty of time, especially due to their almost total paucity of tech even compared to the other human societies in the DUNE universe, for their successor generations to basically forget all that was about anywhere else.

    • @vine01
      @vine01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gargoyles9999 Kynes knew, Kynes understood to a degree how spice and worm are connected, and Kynes and his Fremen friends started terraforming the planet. First water caches, then when there's enough, stabilize the sand dunes first at the wind side, with resilient weeds. once sand does not move, it can become soil. sand is full of minerals and plants need water and sunlight, that's it. no brown soil or anything. Dune has two problems - water distributed unevenly in the system, and moving ground.

      ALIA does have blue eyes in most all early scenes but for that time unfortunately the eye tracking cgi would get dropped by whatever software in scenes. Does NOT take away from a honest well produced near to canon scripting of the Dune books this film accomplished. It's a nitpick. Lynch Dune had lots of blue eyes but barely followed the book, though Frank was just happy to have his work onscreen since George Lucas had gotten away with major copyright infringement lawsuit putting out the Star Wars movies constantly lifting things from DUNE universe. But most modern scifi is coopting using old scifi writers' works without giving homage, unlike GRRM who atleast does openly admit his love influences to Tolkien, Dune, Lovecraft & EVEN Star Wars(Twins in love possible sex) saying he was a geek.
