      Your friend on the genealogy channel thinks m1tochondrial DNA is passed down solely through the mother. That isn't believed believed to be true any longer, so his theory about m1tochondrial Eve can't be correct as stated; this is critical to his theory and so destroys his credibility.

      Was there any president with no close relations at all in the 8th degree region?
      And you could have added a graphic with all presidents sorted by how many of the other presidents they have such relations to (not who to ro family tree or all, just like an Atomic chart the mere number of connections, would be complicated enough ;))

    I'm glad that Mr. Beat is encouraging people to dig a little bit into their family history. It's a fun way to learn about history. If you keep digging you'll see that your family was impacted by history one way or another. History touches everyone. I'll never forget one of the first discoveries I made when I started doing genealogy: It was my grandpa's cousin. He was a highly decorated hero of WWII. No one in the family ever spoke of him. Not a single word. It was probably too painful. So it was weird when I dug a little deeper and discovered his amazing story: My grandpa's cousin and his pilot were the last two American servicemen to die during the Battle of Midway. They were shot down while attacking a Japanese battleship. They scored a hit, setting the ship ablaze and killing about 500 Japanese sailors. The following year the Navy honored my grandpa's cousin and his pilot by naming two brand new destroyer escort ships after them. The ships were the USS Griswold and the USS Bunch. When you discover stories like this WWII becomes more than just stale facts in a dry history book. Your family lived it and suffered through it. History has more meaning.

    Just watched your (and Useful Chart's presidential relations videos) and it got me into doing my genealogy again. My father's side has been in the US since the early to mid 1600s, almost all of them in Virginia. My closest presidential relation is to James Madison, who is my 3rd cousin, 7 times removed.
    Funnily enough, I'm also 3rd cousins with Thomas Jefferson. But what I found more interesting about that was that my ancestors lived mere miles from where Jefferson also lived. I'm sure it wasn't as interesting to them back then, but it is now!
    By this video's standard of "8th cousins or less", I am closely related to at least 22 US presidents.

As in the 2nd generation they became American citizens, and during one of the wars between the UK and the US one of the ships was captured by the UK Navy, which they retained as a spoil of war. I am not certain if the family got compensation from the US govt after the war was over.

    What most people know:
    John Adams and John Q. Adams were father and son, and so were George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison were grandfather and grandson, Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were distant cousins, and Andrew Johnson and Lyndon B. Johnson were actually not related at all, having only a last name and the fact that they took over after an assassination in common.

    I've been doing genealogy for 12+ years and I have an unsolved mystery. I believe I am somehow related to Martin Van Buren but I cannot find the records to prove it. For about 100 yrs between 1830 and 1920 my family went crazy naming almost every first-born son after Van Buren. It's nutz and doesn't make any sense because Van Buren was a so-so president. I believe they were obsessed with him because he was a distant relative somehow. Oddly, I have found proof that some relatives had political connects around that period and were within "six degrees of seperation" of Van Buren. For example, one relative was a member of Andrew Jackson's Kitchen Cabinet while Van Buren was Jackson's VP. --But my family didn't name 25+ kids after Jackson. They were all into Van Buren for some weird reason. I hope someday to solve this frustrating mystery.

    Great video, cuz! Just wondering, do you think it's a coincidence that the two father/son president combos are combos where the fathers and sons have the same first names? It must be an advantage to run for president with the same first and last name as a president. And I know of at least one child of a president without the same name wasn't elected (Jeb Bush). I wonder if there are any more?

    • @iammrbeat
      @iammrbeat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh it's a coincidence but I might add that having the literal same name as a previous President helps a candidate way more than it hurts them. And poor Jeb. 🙁

    • @russbear31
      @russbear31 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm related to Nixon through one of my great-grandmothers. He's like a 7th or 8th cousin. They were a bunch of inbred Quakers who settled in Maryland in the 1680s and fled westward from there. My family married into the Nixon family in the 1780s in Baltimore and then moved with them to Vinton County, Ohio, in the early 1800s to establish a Quaker colony there. Thankfully, the Quakers were some of the most educated people in early America and kept detailed records of births, deaths, and marriages before the government even thought of doing this. If you have Quakers in your tree genealogy is a breeze.
